I find myself here less and less. There will be major updates and promo for the magazine, but I can be found under this username on Mastodon & Bluesky.
OPINION: as a NON morning person, I really wish that we didnโt ascribe โvirtueโ to the ability to be productive/cogent/nonferal before a certain time. Not everyone works the same way, and thatโs OKAY. SOMEONE has to keep watch in the night, and the early birds ainโt gonna do it.
โAre we helping people TOO MUCHโ should not really be the question you ask during a global pandemic.
Or, really, ever.
What if we just... did? What if we just... helped people as a default because it is the right thing to do without worrying about whether it was โdeservedโ?
Wikipedia is a perfectly reasonable place to begin research on a topic that is new to you. The key: mine it for keywords and connections, and then start heading for more comprehensive sources. That. Is. What. Encyclopedias. Are. Designed. To. Do.
This was the actual convo:
Man: "Have you heard of the Hugo Awards?"
Me: "Yes, I've won two of them."
Man: :goes on to explain the Hugo Awards at length:
Hereโs the thing: Libraries and authors/publishers are a symbiotic relationship. When libraries use right of first sale to pay for books and lend them, or pay to license ebooks and lend them, they are helping to grow the audience of people who will directly purchase books. 1/12
I have been on a steady diet of romance novels during this month of exhaustion, stress, and illness. If you write them, thank you for creating comfort during a very difficult time. It matters.
And Iโm not even a night owl! But Iโm far less surly in general when I donโt have to fight my own body clock, and I suspect that is pretty universal.
10/28 Today is Caitlinโs 20th birthday.
Caitlin slept (yay!) although she had several smaller sleeping desats overnight that resolved themselves or were resolved with a little oxygen. (Less yay).
This. Policing the term โqueerโ is a way to get us to throw each other under the bus, which saves *their* energy. Divide and conquer, and weโre already seeing a fuckton of legislation and bullshit in the US specifically targeting trans folks.
Push back. HARD.
They don't want us to use the word queer because queer is indivisible. You can split up all the letters in LGBTQIA+. You cannot split up queer.
I'm not any one fucking letter and I'm not letting anyone demonize one letter. I'm queer, as in fuck you.
This is the hardest thing I've ever shared. We have been crying since this went up. We love you all so much. Caitlin loves her SF/F aunts and uncles so very much. Thank you. <3
Could we just have a rule that if you're going to write about romance novels during February, you must read a minimum of 25 of them, published in the past 10 years, at least half of which should be from BIPOC or queer authors?
THEN you can have an opinion.
If you are sad today, and you were happy in 2016, you spent 4 years encouraging this government to do everything it can to harm my family.
You are not, never were, my friend.
You showed me who you are, and I believe you.
Be better.
While I am declaring bandwidth bankruptcy for responding directly to all of the kind messages about Caitlinโs passing, please know that both Michael and I are reading each and every one of them, and they are appreciated.
WE ARE GETTING SPRUNG! An oral antibiotic has been identified and ordered. Her stents are out. Discharge paperwork is being submitted. We should be home this afternoon and WE WILL BE GOING TO DISNEY AND GALLY AS PLANNED.
@michaeldthomas
Caitlin is awake, has had her first shower in her own house in 2 months using her *own products*, and is now hanging out listening to Exile in Guyville.
@michaeldthomas
As someone who paid off my own damned student loans, I am GLAD that others are getting loan forgiveness. Just because it sucked for me doesn't mean that I want other folks to suffer too.
If we properly funded education in the first place, this wouldn't need to be a thing.
If everyone has enough and is cared for, then we donโt waste time and energy on arguments about who deserves what. We can just...live.
Letโs do that.
Good morning internet. I am alive. Rather sore, moving slowly, but I am here. Hoping to maybe graduate to solid food (liquid diet last night) and to eventually be sent home today.
Getting vaccinated is NOT license to travel through time and space in a wooden police box solving problems and having shenanigans with friends.
Mostly.

Today is Caitlinโs 18th birthday! This is one of those Big Feelings days, as we werenโt sure weโd get to this point, particularly after last year. There will be lots of hugs today (once sheโs out of bed). My heart is full.
Libraries did NOT scan print copies purchased once at cover price and lend them out for free. Internet Archive may be a non-profit, but it is NOT working on the same model as your local public library. IA is โdisruptingโ this symbiotic relationship between libs and pubs. 4/12
Today is the 23rd anniversary of me marrying this handsome fella. It has been a lifetime of adventures, with more to come as we pack up for our Disney/Gally trip.
I love you,
@michaeldthomas

HELLO INTERNET! Surgery was routine and as it should be. Iโm now home on my couch, will do my best impression of a potato for the next few days, with intermittent walking around.
So I started reading Swordheart because somehow I got the notion that it included both libraries and time travel and therefore itโs for The Infinite Loop project. Thereโs one scene in the library, but no time travel, and I. Donโt. Care. In the least. Because

Iโm not saying voting will fix everything, far from it, but with states working THIS hard to make voting harder, we should be doing it just to spite the motherfuckers if at all possible.
Twenty years ago, I married
@michaeldthomas
. Five years ago, I married him again. This has been the trip of a lifetime, and I am damn lucky to have him as a life partner.
Reader, I love him.
Dear Friends and Family of Caitlin:
Caitlin passed away at 1 am this morning in the Lurie Children's Hospital PICU. We never left her side, and she was made comfortable for her last 10 hours. She listened to David Bowie, Neko Case, and the New Pornographers. 1/4
Caitlin update 10/13: 2 small desats last night, only one of which required a little oxygen. She is snoozing away comfortably now. After desat
#2
I sent
@michaeldthomas
off to sleep in the guest room so that he would get SOME sleep.
Grateful to be home.
Caitlin update: We are basically at the point of: if labs are good tomorrow morning, no frequent oxygen desaturation, and pain is controlled, she and
@michaeldthomas
can go home tomorrow.
Please rev up all the boring vibes you have. That is what we need.
It is
@michaeldthomas
's 45th birthday today. He has spent the past 2 months being a literal superhero as Caitlin's main caregiver during this illness. While holding me together.
I am lucky and grateful to have him as my life partner.
I love you, Michael. ๐
Everyone wins in this scenario when it remains in balance: copyright is respected, libraries & their patrons are happy, and authors and publishers get paid. Libraries :already: pay more for ebook lending per copy than when you buy one for yourself to compensate for lending. 2/12
We are in a room at Lurie in Chicago with Caitlin and have had dinner. We have seen several doctors, and tests are being run. We wonโt know a lot before tomorrow morning, but she is stable, safe, and being kept comfortable while we figure out what is going on.
One of my favorite ways to think through complex problems is "how does this decision affect the least powerful person included in this scenario." If I can make choices that mitigate harm, I do that.
I wish more folks did this.
Iโm pleased to note that I passed my post-surgical follow up appointment with flying colors. The largest fibroid removed was the size of a GRAPEFRUIT and I am 6lbs lighter now. Pain controlled, healing well, and Iโm now allowed to use unscented lotion on my skin!
Who has two thumbs and fibroids large enough that I will need to schedule a hysterectomy to yeet my uterus at some point in the near future with 6 weeks of recovery? :points to self: THIS GIRL.
Caitlin update: sheโs gone 24 hours without needing emergency oxygen, so itโs been a good day and overnight. Sheโs continuing to listen to The Spare Man while I attempt to avoid spoilers when I check on her. ๐
Libraries are a prime way readers/buyers TRY OUT someone to add to their โbuyโ list. They borrow first, then the back catalogue thing happens. Then the future book purchases happen too. When people read & like publicly with library copies, THATโS WORD OF MOUTH. 14/12
My take on the IA case is that a bunch of folks who really wanted to โdisruptโ traditional libraries just did, but not for the better. Being a publisher and a librarian means that I want authors to be paid, and for libraries to survive, and the ruling makes both harder.
And in doing so, IA is not only costing authors and publishers money, it is endangering first use and the right of first sale that legally makes library lending POSSIBLE. The challenge is that of capitalism: the drive for anything sold is to make more money doing the thing 5/12
Relatively quiet afternoon. Her lunch stayed in, no further vomiting or seizures. She has been drowsing as she fights a low grade fever, but is more responsive when she is up. She is starting to answer questions and express her opinions, which is a GOOD thing.
@michaeldthomas
Just need to make it through WorldCon, and we can adopt a cat. Just need to make it through WorldCon, and we can adopt a cat.
Just need to make it through WorldCon, and we can adopt a cat.
Just need to make it through WorldCon, and we can adopt a cat.
Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
But libraries arenโt on a capitalist model. They serve the common good and provide universal access, not just to those who can pay directly. This is not a bad thing per se, but if the ONLY thing you worry about is sales, your incentive to work with libraries drops. 6/12
Caitlinโs surgeon called. Sheโs done, heading to recovery. Stents were needed and have been placed, so we will have to come back in a couple of weeks to get her stones cleaned out. We should be reunited soon and hopefully discharged tomorrow.
Having had a nap, a shower, and some Hugo the Cat time,
@michaeldthomas
is back at the hospital with me.
Caitlin's progress remains slow, but the doctors are happy with the direction it is moving in.
So: Internet Archive should not do this thing, and maybe authors and publishers and libraries should go back to the drawing table & figure out an updated version of the system that gets authors & publishers paid but doesnโt bankrupt libraries. Symbiosis means COOPERATION. 12/12
What libraries do for HAS ECONOMIC VALUE to publishers and authors. What publishers and authors do HAS ECONOMIC VALUE for libraries. Internet Archive is throwing this balance off even more, and eroding the fragile trust between libs and pubs/authors, and the legal standing 9/12
Caitlin remains stable and is resting. Progress is very slow. I have sent
@michaeldthomas
home for his turn to get some sleep as he's slept about 6 hours in the past 2 days.
I am supporting
@ewarren
. She does the work, she learns from her mistakes and tries to do better, and she closely matches my hopes and goals.
I๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝll vote tactically in the general because a moldy ham sandwich would be be an improvement. But I wonโt necessarily like it.
Iโm a relatively huggy person, but 1) I ALWAYS ASK FIRST, even with people I have known forever and 2) abide by the answer, absolutely, every time.
โIโm a huggy person. Would you like a hug?โ Is not. That. Hard.
If answer is โno,โ Donโt Hug.
Sheesh.
Hey, Twittermigos. You know how some people exclaim "I'm a hugger!" and immediately press their bodies against someone without any regard about whether the other person wants that?
Lots of folks absolutely hate that.
I'm folks.
Caitlin update 10/23: rough night overnight. Five separate desats between 1am and 5am, all of which responded to oxygen. Iโm a bit bleary. Sheโs sleeping comfortably now.
IAโs behavior right now is further endangering the symbiotic relationship that libraries and authors and publishers spent decades building up. Thatโs bad for libraries AND for authors and publishers. There are studies about readers discovering authors through libs and buying 7/12
Iโm really hoping that folks who are discovering Tony Leungโs awesomeness seeing Shang-Chi will go back to some of his 90s films with Wong Kar-Wai. In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express are AMAZING for showing his range as an actor.
Caitlin is resting mostly comfortably; her pain is manageable with tylenol and positioning. She was even in her wheelchair a little this afternoon. The reintroduction of food will be slow and conservative, which means we will be here for a while.
@michaeldthomas
One last photo from the Hugos, taken by Richard Man for his "Worldbuilders of SF & Fantasy" photo project. Taken just about at midnight, when I was very much ready to turn into a pumpkin.
Recently, a publisher, feeling they werenโt getting paid enough by libraries in this model, raised prices & added longer embargo times for ebooks. Libraries boycotted that publisher b/c they couldnโt afford the new pricing. Or they paid more & put up with the longer waits. 3/12
