Here’s the thing: Libraries and authors/publishers are a symbiotic relationship. When libraries use right of first sale to pay for books and lend them, or pay to license ebooks and lend them, they are helping to grow the audience of people who will directly purchase books. 1/12

We are in a room at Lurie in Chicago with Caitlin and have had dinner. We have seen several doctors, and tests are being run. We won’t know a lot before tomorrow morning, but she is stable, safe, and being kept comfortable while we figure out what is going on.

I’m pleased to note that I passed my post-surgical follow up appointment with flying colors. The largest fibroid removed was the size of a GRAPEFRUIT and I am 6lbs lighter now. Pain controlled, healing well, and I’m now allowed to use unscented lotion on my skin!

Libraries are a prime way readers/buyers TRY OUT someone to add to their “buy” list. They borrow first, then the back catalogue thing happens. Then the future book purchases happen too. When people read & like publicly with library copies, THAT’S WORD OF MOUTH. 14/12

My take on the IA case is that a bunch of folks who really wanted to “disrupt” traditional libraries just did, but not for the better. Being a publisher and a librarian means that I want authors to be paid, and for libraries to survive, and the ruling makes both harder.

Relatively quiet afternoon. Her lunch stayed in, no further vomiting or seizures. She has been drowsing as she fights a low grade fever, but is more responsive when she is up. She is starting to answer questions and express her opinions, which is a GOOD thing. @michaeldthomas

But libraries aren’t on a capitalist model. They serve the common good and provide universal access, not just to those who can pay directly. This is not a bad thing per se, but if the ONLY thing you worry about is sales, your incentive to work with libraries drops. 6/12

Caitlin’s surgeon called. She’s done, heading to recovery. Stents were needed and have been placed, so we will have to come back in a couple of weeks to get her stones cleaned out. We should be reunited soon and hopefully discharged tomorrow.

Caitlin remains stable and is resting. Progress is very slow. I have sent @michaeldthomas home for his turn to get some sleep as he's slept about 6 hours in the past 2 days.

I am supporting @ewarren . She does the work, she learns from her mistakes and tries to do better, and she closely matches my hopes and goals. I��ll vote tactically in the general because a moldy ham sandwich would be be an improvement. But I won’t necessarily like it.

I’m a relatively huggy person, but 1) I ALWAYS ASK FIRST, even with people I have known forever and 2) abide by the answer, absolutely, every time. “I’m a huggy person. Would you like a hug?” Is not. That. Hard. If answer is “no,” Don’t Hug. Sheesh.

Caitlin update 10/23: rough night overnight. Five separate desats between 1am and 5am, all of which responded to oxygen. I’m a bit bleary. She’s sleeping comfortably now.

IA’s behavior right now is further endangering the symbiotic relationship that libraries and authors and publishers spent decades building up. That’s bad for libraries AND for authors and publishers. There are studies about readers discovering authors through libs and buying 7/12

I’m really hoping that folks who are discovering Tony Leung’s awesomeness seeing Shang-Chi will go back to some of his 90s films with Wong Kar-Wai. In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express are AMAZING for showing his range as an actor.

Caitlin is resting mostly comfortably; her pain is manageable with tylenol and positioning. She was even in her wheelchair a little this afternoon. The reintroduction of food will be slow and conservative, which means we will be here for a while. @michaeldthomas

Recently, a publisher, feeling they weren’t getting paid enough by libraries in this model, raised prices & added longer embargo times for ebooks. Libraries boycotted that publisher b/c they couldn’t afford the new pricing. Or they paid more & put up with the longer waits. 3/12
