"the maintainer is a legitimate communist. i will not be supporting this language"
- yt comments, 2024
they/them or he/him. end fossil fuels. end genocide.
Other than the $74 I made from streaming last month I live entirely off of donations!
If you appreciate Gleam please support me on GitHub sponsors, asking your employer to do so too, and sharing this message!
@davesnx
Hard to learn, very high memory usage, slow to compile, slow to boot, not amazing tooling, unstable foundation with very large breaking changes in the language, some baggage from Java, stories of horrific behaviour from noted community members.
Exciting news: Today was my last full day at Nomio. I'm now working full time on Gleam!!! 💖
Thank you to all the Gleam sponsors for making this possible. I am so grateful for your support and I can't wait to show you what's coming next ✨
I hear you wanted type safe SQL in Gleam, so I’m really happy to share my latest package Squirrel 🐿️
You can write your SQL queries in plain old .sql files and Squirrel will take care of the rest! No hand-writing decoders, no compromises on type safety and it just works™️

Having a special isolated school that special powerful families go to, after which students go on to control everything- that's also pretty British.
Gleam projects can now include
@elixirlang
modules!
We can now make full use of all the wonderful things in the Elixir world 💜
Thank you Tynan Beatty for this rad feature!
Without any corporate backing my finances are not doing great. I'm currently earning less than a third of my conservative target, the lowest since 2021.
What could I do here? Books take a long time. Merch is in the works. Streaming doesn't earn. Conferences are a big net loss.
Wow folks, thank you so much for all the love today. It has honestly been quite overwhelming.
Shout out to
@ThePrimeagen
and
@t3dotgg
for opening the flood gates, and
@flydotio
getting us here in the first place! You're the best 💖
Some good news! I'm joining
@EmbarkStudios
as an Open Source Engineer!
Super excited to join the team and start working on the
@rust_gamedev
ecosystem 🥳
I may have found a solution to a Gleam programming problem that has had me stumped for 2 years.
The solution is 14 lines of Gleam code and no compiler changes. What.
Following up from my previous post about the ethics of employment I've decided not to continue interviewing for the Facebook Erlang team, so now I'm looking for a job!
Please share with all your lovely friends 💜
Starting from next week I will be going part time at the day job to invest more time into Gleam! Expect a lot more Gleam in future ✨
A huge thank you to
@flydotio
,
@teamalembic
, and all the other sponsors for making this possible! 💖
I legitimately have ignored
@gleamlang
entirely, though it is firmly in the arena of languages i find most interesting, because they would consider citing Bible verses to be exclusionary so no Christians allowed
About once a week I pause while writing Gleam and go "holy shit it's a real language and it's good"
Hard to comprehend how far it has come since I managed to "Hello, world!" years go

My dude, she went viral proclaiming that she's a communist on a popular national TV talk show.
also lol, thinking Putin is a communist.
Expectations from a new programming language are crazy nowadays.
A new language has to
Have a formatter
Have a linter
Have a build tool
Have a package manager
Have documentation
Have project templates
Have a friendly community
Have a minimal ecosystem of CLI parsers, web
I twitch raided
@teej_dv
with my ~25 viewers.
About 30 seconds later he sent them back + 250 with a raid of his own, resulting an unplanned extra 2 hours of streaming from me.
That was so much fun!! And wow I'm dead now 😴
CodeCrafters have just launched a course in which you implement Redis in Gleam!
If that (or any of the other courses) sounds like your sort of thing then sign up using my referral link and a portion of the price will go to supporting Gleam.
Our final Keynote Speaker spotlight for Code BEAM Europe 2024 is for
@hayleighdotdev
and
@louispilfold
! 🇪🇺
They're going take a look at how Gleam was shaped by the BEAM, some of the stories around it, and how Gleam is opening up the BEAM to a whole new group of developers! 💡
Babe wake up, new compiler warning just dropped. Now Gleam’s compiler will warn you when you’re building a list and immediately matching on it, suggesting a better alternative! ✨
This Gleam type search is amazing! Find the function you need from all published Gleam packages!
Try searching for this: fn(List(a), fn(a) -> b) -> List(b)
I’m super excited to say that
@gleamlang
will support function arguments hints in the next release! And it works with regular calls, pipes and use so you won’t have to jump to a function’s documentation no matter how you’re calling it ✨
The vid of me implementing Redis in Gleam has been more popular than my other vids lately.
What makes you like this more than the others? And what would you like to see in future?
To the secondary school teacher using Gleam to teach computer science:
Are you aware that your students are private-messaging asking for help with their homework? 😁
Bad news: I'm going to be unemployed from next week
Good news: I'm going to use this as an opportunity to work more on Gleam!
If you'd like to support me in doing this please consider sponsoring me on GitHub
Hetzner just launched ARM based VPS.
2 core aarch64 with 4GB RAM, 40 GB disc and 20 TB traffic for € 3.92!
Hot damn that is _cheap_.
Super hyped to see more ARM in the world
First day at
@EmbarkStudios
and I've gotta say: This is a damn cool company and there's some very exciting
@rustlang
things coming from them in future.
