Grenfell? Hillsborough? Stephen Lawrence’s murder? Nope.
“Poor innocent white woman didn’t do this because I don’t believe a white woman is this evil & I don’t believe the poc doctors who worked with her” is ‘one of the worst British miscarriages of justice of our time.’

@queertyyr
The way the words were used in school bullying when I was young, “lesbian” and “gay” were used ALL THE TIME as slurs, whereas “queer” was never used, so queer always felt more comfortable to me!

First postdoc rejection WOOOOO!!
I think it’s good to recognise how much work we put into applying for these positions and celebrate the fact that we’re trying even when we don’t succeed! 😄
@bkadams
@ProfKFH
She should literally do the OPPOSITE - keep going, break every record and remind everyone why she’s the goat!! People say the same thing to Lewis Hamilton!!
I guess I should be able to celebrate this publicly even though it’s conditional on my Masters, but...
I’ve been accepted onto the English Literature PhD at Surrey 🥺
Absolutely over the moon to be (hopefully) joining the
@Surrey_SLLPGRs
next year! 🥺✨
Alison Phipps is a fantastic academic and people really should read Me, Not You, if they can! I’m glad I got to tell her how brilliant her book is before she deactivated 😞
I received my final undergrad grade today...
So I can finally say that I’m graduating with a first class degree in English Literature with Film Studies!! 🥺🎉
I would love to not be in loads of debt for my PhD but I didn’t get funding so 🤷♀️ trying to prevent people without the financial means from doing a PhD is not the win you think it is. Incredibly privileged and exclusive perspective.
Annual advice to PhD applicants: Do not go into debt for a PhD. It doesn't matter how perfectly the program fits, how amazing the faculty are, how passionate you feel. Unless you're independently wealthy, you don't go without full funding. This is a hill I will die on.
I’m glad the high witch lady has completely lost it; it should help EVERYONE realise that she was always a huge bigot & pretending to be “reasonable” in the early days. Multiple genocides & conflicts going on & you’re ranting about a marginalised group wanting basic human rights?
Put in a job application for a teaching fellow role yesterday and today found out I’ve been shortlisted for an award and highly commended by my university’s institute of education 😭😭 such a shame I can’t alter the app! 😅
This is absolutely terrifying. Violence against women seems to be at a ridiculous high right now. Wishing Rebecca Cheptegei a full recovery 💔 and for her assailant to be permanently locked up.
Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei has suffered burns to more than 75% of her body after she was allegedly set on fire by her ex boyfriend.
The marathon runner, who competed in the Paris Olympics, is in critical condition. She was attacked at home.

once again. Continuous attacks coming in across the board and it seems like the KC debacle is never ending… utterly evil. Sending all my love and support to these three brilliant women x

Right so
I’ve only just realised that I’m part of the class of 2020...
I’ve pushed my university graduation out of my head because it hasn’t felt important...
But I guess it’s ok for me to take a moment to say I’m here, I did it and I’m a 2020 graduate.

English stays but English language & linguistics and comparative lit are gone?? That makes no sense? What “English” is remaining if the other two are removed?
This is utterly sickening in so many ways.
They keep finding the most depraved ways to kill and brutalise us.

In all seriousness, this should be much more normalised - it’s taken years for me to feel comfortable enough to go to work/certain events without makeup!

Jairo is an essential, brave and important voice in academia - one that we NEED. The last thing he deserves is to be harassed/doxed so vehemently.
Please sign this letter in support.
Our friend

Today I want women to send me their age, the number of people you’ve slept with & how you genuinely feel about it. Who was your favourite experience with? AND have you ever lied about it?
ALL MESSAGES WILL BE ANON BY DEFAULT!
GRIM. This is why media literacy is at an all time low. Literature is SO important in shaping how people understand symbols, messages & underlying ideas. Preventing people from studying literature will stunt emotional intelligence, empathy & awareness of media’s deeper meanings.
I'm convinced literature in general can't really be taught at scale and shouldn't be.
Just teach kids how to write a decent email and skip the bs about what the color green represents in the Great Gatsby.
Worth also noting that the School of Literature and Languages has incredible student satisfaction results, which the university is proud to show on their website, but not proud enough, apparently, to treat staff the way they deserve.
I’ve been at the University of Surrey for over EIGHT years now (as a UG, MA & PGR) & have been so incredibly fortunate to be taught & supervised by many brilliant academics. It’s abhorrent that any of them face job insecurity.

@underafelledsky
This is absolutely appalling - a load of unnecessary stress for him just because he mentioned you’re doing a PhD? I don’t know what the processes are, but is there a way to report the supervisor’s actions at all?
So, I know people will probably laugh but
I made Tex Mex enchiladas with refried beans, Mexican rice and Queso today, all from scratch, for my family and they all said it was amazing so I am so proud of myself 😅
So yesterday I ran my first 10k race and I finished it! Since last Thursday, I’ve been ill with a really nasty super cold thingy so I wasn’t able to do it in the best possible time but considering I felt so ill, I’m just glad that I finished it and I also didn’t have to walk!
Just to exemplify how much I dislike men
A guy commended me today for eating a whole sandwich because “most girls would only eat half”
Dude congratulated me for eating a sandwich like are you serious

I’m not very good at sharing positives at the best of times, never mind at the moment, but I entered a short story competition and, whilst I didn’t win, I did get shortlisted and I’m being published again 🥹
A brilliant paper from the wonderful

@chimenesuleyman
Yes! And this is why the trend of “crying white women” is so dangerous - so many white women feign fragility to oppress minorities (especially people of colour)... all they want is power.

present “Re-negotiating Nineteenth-Century History Through the Arts” on March 11th 2023. Calling all Victorianists, Neo-Victorianists and creative writers/scholars interested in the re-writing of history!
In one of my Great Expectations seminars this morning, a student said “experiencing cruelty does not give someone the right to enact cruelty themselves” and I feel like a lot of people need to sit with that.
Day two of

was just as thrilling as day one! Fascinating discussions about fact and fiction in semi-biographic fiction/auto fiction/the archive. Like yesterday, I’ll leave you with a picture. This time it’s the beautiful cherry trees on Keele’s campus!
Well after months of saying I’m 27 whenever people ask, I’m finally actually 27 🤣🎈

English Lit is trending in the UK for being a useless subject.
Let me just go throw myself, an aspiring English Lit professor, and my First Class degree out the window...
quote this with something you accomplished that you’re proud of, no matter how big or small!
doing this again because there is a lot of negativity on the TL lmao
