I'm on strike. 51% of university staff are now on casualised contracts. Our gender & BAME pay gap is atrocious. The workload is nuts. Meanwhile, £££ is pumped into

We’re striking because they're slashing pensions by 40% & extending marketisation. Who benefits from uni marketisation? VCs on astronomical salaries; an expanding bureaucracy; financial services; contracted corporations. Not lecturers, not students, not education.

&beyond who I learnt a lot from in the last 11 yrs & who made the difficult landscape of UK HE more bearable
Great to see journalism on UK universities in crisis.
But what still needs writing is an investigative piece on the 100s of millions spent by UK unis on private consultancies etc. Public money on corporate outsourcing is a key part of the picture.
Glad
@chakrabortty
has written this - there needs to be a much wider wising up to how no even vaguely left leader can look good in this right wing media landscape
I just looked through my photo collection and found these pictures of Antonio Negri talking 20 years ago at the European Social Forum; opening our minds to what alternatives to capitalism could be, could look like.
Starting my one year Research Fellowship on 'Ideologies of Inequality' today and it's the first time I've had more than 12 weeks research time for over 20 years, many thanks
@LeverhulmeTrust
. Looking forward to a lot of library time.
There is NO convincing financial justification for proposed redundancies
@GoldsmithsUoL
In fact new HESA data shows it's doing well given the sector
Time to stop giving millions to private consultancies & reverse the cuts!

#Leftfeminisms
I spent election night 2019 with many other pple in Chingford &WG helping get the vote out for the hugely popular
@faizashaheen
. This baseless Orwellian action is part of a wider undemocratic authoritarian purge of the left & is rightly widely seen as misogynistic & racist
New: Doctor Faiza Shaheen, after winning a democratic selection, has now been blocked by the leadership and
@Keir_Starmer
from standing as Labour’s candidate in Chingford.
Academics 'are frequently stuck on insecure, poorly paid, temporary contracts [...]Meanwhile the pay of VCs ballooned as universities reconfigured themselves as businesses with interests in property development as well as education'
There has been a lot of work on this in cultural, media and gender studies.

Someone really should write a history of British sexual culture since the nineties, from Lads & Ladettes to Me Too. A sexual revolution which, like the '60s, was fun for some but in 2023 we're still living with its ugly consequences.
I’m getting over Covid but what makes me more tired is the erosion of teaching + learning conditions in universities, which is why I'm on strike from today

Anyone who works in universities sees students increasingly being forced into doing ‘degrees on the side’ & juggling an array of jobs.
As well as increasingly stark divisions between as well as within universities. The lens needs to move beyond ‘the top’
‘For most of my political life, Labour has attempted to cattle-prod me to the polls with the threat that if it lost, things would be much worse. It is a relief to have a party woo me with the notion that if it wins things could get much better’

Similarly I tuned into R4's Today this morning and heard very negative coverage of the French elections and an interview with someone from Le Pen's party being given lots of airtime for far right views on migration.
Guys, Suella Braverman isn't in charge any more
To hear Kirsty Wark mutter that it was wrong to call Mrs Le Pen's party 'far right' - and that they should be considered 'right wing' - sent a shudder down my spine this morning on

According to this university finance expert's reading of the latest HESA data, Goldsmiths is in a very safe financial position (in fact just in the 'excess reserves' category.) There is no need to force redundancies.
@GoldsmithsUCU
#notadonedeal
A quick and dirty chart based on HESA data for 31 July 2023.
This shows cash days at each established UK HEI. The ones on the left have cash too low for comfort. Potential "distress"
The ones on the right have "excess reserves" (CC19 guidance).
Equality is not achieved by meritocracy and social mobility, but by sharing the wealth, anti-discrimination and democracy all the way down. New piece I wrote for

"it is time to remove the vocabulary of the market place, the student as customer & the ethos of competition in what needs to be re-framed as a public good. The post-war period saw the growth of a world-leading sector...The free-market model of recent years has little to offer"

I nearly died in childbirth at this hospital and saw so many highly skilled staff struggling against the effects of pointless privatization & savage cuts. The cuts, privatization and the Conservatives all need to go
My friend Omar had to wait 2 hours for his 7 day old daughter to be seen. There was only 1 Registrar on the ward. Then Boris Johnson turns up on a press junket.

It’s good to make the case for soc sciences, arts + humanities when they’re under attack. But sticking ‘the economy’ on the end & having reality TV guru Bazalgette promote it turns it into 3rd way corporate boosterism. The E should've been 'environments’.

I keep thinking that literally anyone not on the right now has to find better and smarter ways of working together and to become less factional and sectarian. But right now I'm just opening the Xmas chocolate early.
The vaccine programme has worked well so far in the UK primarily because of socialised infrastructure + public funding (NHS & university research), despite what Gordon Gekko wants us to believe. Textbook ideology in action, down to the Trump-style dismissal of comments as banter
Having Covid keeps me away from the
