EDM IS AN UMBRELLA TERM FOR DANCE MUSIC, BUT IT MOSTLY REFERS TO BIG ROOM HOUSE AND POP-DANCE MUSIC. IT’S A COMMERCIALIZED WORD & IT NEGLECTS ALL OF THE NUANCES OF DANCE MUSIC, LIKE DETROIT TECHNO VS. INDUSTRIAL TECHNO & CHICAGO HOUSE VS. TECH HOUSE
I get emails from artists asking how much it costs for me to write an article on them, and it makes me really sad that journalists are out here charging/being unethical in coverage
I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing my favorite artist ever,
@porterrobinson
. He talks everything from "Everything Goes On" to images he sees while writing, advice he'd give young producers and what got him into electronic music. Check it out
“We're in a new generation where so many of us are living our lives proudly & authentically & to be taking steps…back is very sad. I really do believe we'll push through it because that’s what the LGBTQ+ community has always done—rise above.”-
@wreckno
My date canceled on me less than 15 minutes before it started, so I told him that if he cancels less than 2 hours in advance, there is a $15 cancelation fee
“It's not just music or whatever. There is history, and music is a part of what creates the cultural zeitgeist of what's going to be the future. We're in history right now, and we're a part of it. What's going to be our part in the scene?” -

In some personal news...I found out today I don’t have cancer! For the past 4 months I’ve been stressing, seeing doctors and I had to get surgery recently. This is more personal than I usually like to get on Twitter, but I’m too fucking happy/relieved/grateful to not share
I'm trying to say "sorry" less when it comes to working because women apologize too much in the workforce. Is there a good way to not apologize when being late to a meeting besides "thanks for waiting," or is an apology always necessary?
I don’t care that Top 101 Top Producers is making a separate list to show women and POC. ALL producers should be on ONE list. If the music industry championed minorities more, then their music would make the statistic-driven main list, which only shows men as the top producers
“I see so many lineups where girls are always at the bottom, opening the show...I feel like people need to be more willing to help women grow,"
@jeaniesounds

May marks a time to honor the achievements and contributions of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have greatly impacted the United States, whether it’s through music or other accomplishments.
I hate when I tell people I'm taking a break from drinking and they make it weird. Don't ask me a million questions about it, don't be awkward when it comes to making plans and don't treat me like I'm not fun because I'm still fun as fuck
I only had four male friends reach out to me/attend protests/ask how to help this past weekend. For the rest of you, your silence on women’s rights is deafening, and I won’t forget it
In some ~personal news~ today is my first day at a financial service institution focused on withholding tax relief and recovering services. I’m excited for this new chapter in my life. And don’t worry, you’ll still see my freelance work in Forbes, Festival Insider and Gray Area
Today I was one of the people impacted by layoffs at my job. If you or anyone you know is looking for a content manager or copywriter, please reach out. My email is lisakocay

Please, I beg you, stop pitching me at my full time job email address. I’d really like to not get in trouble, and I will not respond to you. My website is listed on all of my social media, and my freelance email is clearly listed under contact
This year, I found myself listening to a wide variety of genres—expanding the breadth of my listening patterns, which was much needed after I sought comfort in the familiar during 2020. Check out my top 15 albums of 2021
It’s been an incredible year, and apparently a very busy one. By the end of 2023, I’ll have published exactly 100 stories. Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with me, and shout out to all the publicists who made these articles happen
I feel bad for people who aren’t open to listening to dance music. There’s so much beauty to unearth with different genes and there’s a phenomenal community that is so accepting of everyone
If you're going to read anything I've ever written, consider these five. They are my favorite articles I wrote in 2023. I feel like I really found my stride with writing this year, and I'm proud of these stories
As of today, I’ve been sober for one year. I initially went sober to work on myself and my mental health, and I’ve grown so much since. I don’t plan to stay sober going forward, but I’ll participate in sober months, whether they’re random or ones like Dry January
I'm really excited for my interview with
@wreckno
to come out, especially because we bonded over the fact that "With You, Friends (Long Drive)" is one of the best Skrillex songs ever. OG fans know what's up
"I wish I learned more about art & design when I was younger. I didn’t take that stuff very seriously in my early years, and, quite honestly, it shows. For the last eight to 10 years it’s played a much bigger role in my career and creativity.” -
@chrislake
Me every Sunday evening: I'm going to wake up early tomorrow and have a productive start to my week!
Me every Monday morning: Lays in bed until the last possible second
Keep normalizing mental health. We’ve come a long way in the last few years, but there’s still more to be done. As someone who is open about my mental health, there are still many aspects of it I feel the need to hide
Looking back on my interviews from this year and I feel so lucky to have interviewed so many great artists and tell their stories. Some people I spoke with include Porter Robinson, Honey Dijon, TSHA, Kerri Chandler, High Contrast, Dixon, Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim and LP Giobbi
Can music journalists stop saying "unless you live under a rock" when talking about something popular? There's not better way to make your reader feel bad about themself
