If NE local rail was more frequent, integrated & maybe rebranded, it’d appeal to more of us.
In the meantime the Northumberland Line may help raise the profile of the current offer.
A combined Metro & Local Rail map could too & promote multimodal travel.
Here’s my interpretation

Wouldn’t it be great if we had a Tyne Ferry, (in addition to the Shields Ferry).
And I mean with London River Bus/Thames Clipper type vessels, which can serve & depart piers impressively quick.
If only.
I can confirm those I retweeted yesterday weren’t posting CGIs or using AI. 😉
There is indeed vehicle mitigation measures in place at Monument, at last!
Full pedestrianisation would be great IMO but this is a good temp. solution to reduce the dangerous pavement parking/driving.
New single-stage pedestrian crossings on St Nicholas’ Street & Mosley Street, meaning you no longer have to wait for 2 separate green men to cross the road. 👍
“Originally the local bus network acted as feeder services to the Metro.
Buses provided shorter trips to & from Metro stations, while the Metro covered longer journeys.
The two systems were fully integrated with unified ticketing, & bus timetables linked to connecting Metros!”
Interesting proposal for Whites Hotel, Osborne Road, Jesmond.
Not particularly the conversation of the main hotel to 10 apartments, but the erection of 8 mews houses to the rear on the current car park to the back lane.
Looks like quite a smart little infill development.

This video recently popped up on YouTube covering the topic nicely:
The Northumberland Line route graphic has been updated online to include Newcastle (Central) and Manors (mainline), as I think some thought the service terminated at Northumberland Park, where they’d have to transfer to Metro, when in fact thats optional.
Gateshead’s ‘Centrelink’ is a great piece of bus-only infrastructure between Dunston Staiths & the Swing Bridge, mostly 50mph too.
It can help buses fly towards Newcastle by avoiding the Redheugh Bridge which suffers from congestion in the AM peak & during events/matches. (1/2)
Our Metro M by graphic design legend Margaret Calvert has been an icon on Tyneside for over 40yrs!
I hope following devolution & possible bus franchising, our newly reintegrated transport system celebrates its truly unique visual identity & rolls it out further.
Keep it CALVERT.

Newsham Station will be the third stop on the Northumberland Line for trains departing Ashington.
The footbridge and lift shafts are up, and the new road bridge can be seen in the background which will replace the level crossing.
🚌 Once the North East receives devolved powers over transport, one quick win could be to address duplicated bus numbers.
It must cause confusion to current & potential bus riders.
Bus use should be simple & easy.

Signage now applied to Central Station’s new western entrance.
Am I right in thinking this is the only exterior signage that includes the station name? 🤔
Maybe I’m a neat freak but I’d love to just reposition, or completely remove, certain street furniture/clutter* where it feels like an obstacle in a pedestrian thoroughfare.
*incs vehicles parked on pavements.
Pop 2.0 🪪 🚍🚇 ⛴️ 🚊
From Autumn 2024, Pop 2.0 will launch introducing Account Based Ticketing (ABT), allowing users to have their daily travel capped across bus, Metro, Ferry and some local rail services.
2 days running I’ve spent £8 on buses due to making additional unplanned journeys.
If I’d known I could’ve purchased the £6 T&W day ticket instead of singles.
Roll on Daily Capping so we don’t have to pre-plan which ticket/modes/operators/zones we’ll need or the no. of journeys!
Stand G at Gateshead Interchange has this blue band along the windows so that when sat waiting you cannot see the destination screens of the approaching buses. 🤦🏻♂️

Usual morning peak at Tyne Bridge. Queue of buses all with heavy loads of passengers, sat idling, delayed, as public transport has no priority here over private transport.

The internal courtyard at St James’ Gate is looking a lot greener than in its earlier days, thanks to the additional planters in recent years, and of course the tree canopy becoming more established.
(And by greenery I don’t mean the awful plastic-grass patches).

Still think this could have greater potential with some proper investment and if it was part of a wider project plan.

Northumberland Line update:
“a new target window for passenger services starting is DECEMBER 2024, although every partner in the project is working hard to allow the line to open ahead of this”.
A raft of major milestones have been reached on the Northumberland Line, with the service up and running later this year.

That map is only to show Pop PAYG zones but I agree it’s not great:
Local rail lines shown in blue too similar to the rivers/sea, & they’ve missed marking the local rail stations at Heworth & Sunderland. 🤦🏻♂️

While Sunderland Station’s new southern entrance awaits some much needed interior design, I had a quick 2 min dabble with the blank rear wall.
(Some signage & bigger departure screens).
‘History of Tyne & Wear Metro - Documentary - The Way Ahead’.
A longer, better quality version of ‘The Way Ahead’ than I’ve previously seen.
Worth a watch if you have 25 mins & are into cities, transit, the NE.
We need to redo some of that good work…
