I think you can understand a lot about housing discourse by simply remembering that some people understand renting *exclusively* as a temporary life arrangement on the path to homeownership. Their main problem with high rents is that it takes longer to save for a deposit.

Sometimes I find the deluge of anti-rent control twitter-yimbys disheartening, but then I remember "we want you to have lower rent, so your landlord must be allowed to raise the rent as much as they want anytime" is a position that will only ever get laughed at by normal people.
