My other half works for one of the big six energy companies and he'd appreciate it if you directed your anger towards the millionaire CEOs and not the modestly paid call centre agents who share the same concerns about how they'll pay their bills as you do.
Hundreds of people have gathered on the Royal Mile to welcome the Duke and duchess of Edinburgh to the Scottish capital for their first official engagement in the role.
I'm here at Kenmure Street where residents are blockading an immigration enforcement van. Its understood officers attempted a raid but the South Side residents have stepped in to stop them being detained.
Not heard screams this loud since I went to see Ronan Keating at the SECC in 2001.
Children from Glasgow schools gathered at The Burrell Collection to greet the King as he arrived to reopen it - 39 years after his mother opened it the first time.
I went to uni in 2010 from a top 10% most deprived area and I’m saddled with absolutely obscene student debt. The SNP were quite happy to strip poorer students of bursaries and travel expenses in favour of increasing loans to perpetuate the “free education” myth.
Labour plans to hike tuition fees in England and are looking to re-introduce them in Scotland.
A re-introduction of fees would prevent young people from the most deprived areas going to university and saddle students with obscene debt.
Only the SNP will protect free tuition.
This isn't acceptable. Expecting Fringe reviewers to be fully flexible for ten hours a day, seven days a week and getting a £200 flat rate for a month at the fringe is just exploitative.
NEW - Coffin makers in Glasgow are going on strike from Halloween until November 7, Unite the Union has confirmed.
They were offered a "real terms pay cut" according to the union.
@RussInCheshire
Your thread brought back so many lovely memories of my old spaniel Lady. She's not with us anymore, but had very similar markings, also got a fish hook stuck in her mouth aged around 6 weeks and gave my family nearly 16 years of happy memories.
Protestors have grown in numbers since I arrived a couple of hours ago. So has police presence. Our
@LadyCatHT
is in among those blocking the van from leaving.
Controversial take: I think you can be a great journalist without chapping the doors of people who are recently bereaved/been through the worst experience of their lives. The younger generation are quite clearly far more mindful of this than the one that came before.
I am still blown away by the BBC reporter who revealed they had never done a door knock in the Media Show episode on why resilience training is now being offered.... I always thought that would be a prerequisite for most reporting roles
@_raggedywho
My favourite bit was when Rob and Claudia were talking about Ed Balls' Strictly cheese related code name and Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo were just nodding along and politely smiling at the inanity of the British cultural psyche.
The home office's own statement seems to disprove this. They said: "The operation in Glasgow was conducted in relation to suspected immigration offences."
'Suspected' is the key operative word here.
Home Office source: "It is completely unacceptable for a mob to stop the lawful removal of people living in our country illegally. We 100% back the frontline in removing those with no right to be here."

In some cases my other half deals with folk who have five bedroom detached houses with two garages screaming down the phone at him in his two bedroom flat in Muirhouse 🤪
Clear from another bout of Rona, Michael and I went out to celebrate our recent anniversary last night and he asked me to marry him. So that's some 🌌huge personal news🌌 from me today!
@JennyLConstable
That's what got me as well. You can get a 500g bag of penne pasta from Lidl for 29p even. The halved vegetables as well... just nasty.
Jamie was the glue that held our wee newsroom (with no microwave or toaster as he frequently observed) together. He made everyone feel like they were his best pal. It didn't matter what he had on, he was always there to help if you needed anything and always put other first.
@Therapod1
That's it. That's the attitude. The call centre worker is doing their job within the parameters that their employers have set. You don't like it? It's not their fault. Don't take it out on them. They're as frustrated as you are.
Been inundated with messages from workers at Arnold Clark today who claim they are bending the rules. More on this to come. If you could work from home or be furloughed but your employer still wants you in work, please get in touch in confidence.
Locals have been dropping off food and refreshments for protestors and turned a bus shelter into a tuck shop. Local businesses also been handing out food and water.
🚨I'm leaving PA for pastures new at the end of next week! It's been an absolutely mad two years in Scottish news and if I'm being honest, the relentlessness of the news cycle has started to take its toll on me a bit physically and mentally.
Happy retirement to my wee mum who has been the janitor
@ElccWest
for the last five years. She's been very emotional tonight after everyone's lovely cards and gifts and the brilliant send off she had!

The Piazza in Paisley, perhaps named to evoke feelings of sitting in an Italian Piazza of an afternoon sipping espresso, rather than deindustrialised west central Scotland.
CW: Suicide
Drag queen and teacher Miss Lossie Mouth/John Campbell said he approached today's Story Hour event in Elgin Library with "trepidation" revealing he had received death threats and told to commit suicide over today's event which 100 families attended.
When I was growing up, Pulp was played a lot in my house as my parents were in their 20s when they were about. I've inherited my taste from them. It was an absolute bucket list moment to see them tonight at

Not often I post about books on here but I’ve been reading a lot recently and I just wanted to say Close to Home by
@michaelmagee__
is one of the best books I’ve read in quite some time. Hard to believe it was a debut. Brilliant. I couldn’t put it down.
Today at the

inquiry for those following:
PC Ash Tomlinson searched Sheku for a knife after he had been restrained and rolled on his side. He found a packet of chewing gum and a mobile phone.
Niall Horan had a very Niall Horan response to his

set.
He said: “it feels like a homecoming set.
“Oh my god. Not that I didn’t know good Scottish crowds were, but I’ve never seen a home nation so up for it.”
LATEST:
@KelvinLabour
have now started an open letter calling for Hollie Cameron's reinstatement with Labour figures such as

giving their backing.

Their new editor is from London. I don’t know why but it’s proper rubbed me up the wrong way. It’s like “here come the Londoners to teach you Weegies how to do journalism”. Was there not a suitably qualified Glasgow-based journo who already has the networks, sources and contacts?
Many of the union brass, especially in Scotland, are Labour activists. It's not a secret. The party is after all the political wing of the trade union movement and they maintain close links.
🪧 Had a chat with some teachers
@NASUWT_Scotland
today on the picket line at Cosla.
One told me it took a lot for teachers to vote to go out on strike and that things "must be in a really poor position" to get that mandate.
Scotrail would be doing key workers a real favour if they simply abolished peak fares. Trains are empty at "peak" times and busy at "off peak" times. Charging people who need the train to go to work more than people going on shopping trips is just a bad look.
@KiltedKunt
@clairebubblepop
Buying a phone on credit or contract is the same thing. If you take out a contract phone that is credit. Point is that a "£1500" iPhone *could* be factored into a monthly budget for around £60. If that's also your household's WiFi hotspot then it might work out good value
First week
@Glasgow_Times
done. Starting a new job is daunting enough at the best of times let alone at a paper the week mew Covid restrictions are announced but it's been great. Good feeling to be around people who love what they do. 😊

@TheLoudenTavern
Precisely. If the fans did indeed assist the council in the clean up, then surely there would be lots of pictures and videos showing them doing this...as it happens, I have not been sent any yet. We wouldn't report without this,but would be happy to do so if such footage existed.
@uncooljerk
Probably The Cat Mummy when she mummifies her dead cat. I re read that as an adult as I was trying to tie it in with an ancient Egypt project I was doing with my class when I was a teacher. I think that book was the beginning of the end of my career in education.
So far, Humza Yousaf’s cabinet is looking very youthful. Mairi McAlan, Jenny Gilruth and Neil Gray - all rising stars in the SNP.
No confirmation yet but looking likely they will be taking on some big jobs.
@kmckenna63
Drag has been an art for centuries and it'll keep going defiantly against pearl clutching like this. What right do you have, as a man, to tell me, a woman, what I should and shouldn't be offended by? I love drag.
The
@FairHospitality
and Macmerry dispute has been rumbling on this week and now the firm has accused the union of "threatening the future" of the firm, a response Unite say is "beyond parody" more here 👇
@PoliticoForYou
This is not Paisley. I'm from Paisley and 1. there is nowhere in Paisley that looks like this and 2. there are nowhere near enough people in Paisley to pull something like this off.
Wasn't to be for Michael in Edinburgh West, but wasn't expecting a win.What
@Michael4EdWest
did achieve was almost doubling the Labour vote, ⬆️ share by 6.3% with no national resources and a few dedicated activists so it's as good a result as could be hoped for!
#ge2024
Had an amazing time last night (paying for it today...) thanks to this pair for running about like headless chickens to organise while I was down with covid.
And with that, I'm finally 30. 🤯
STUDENTS: Do you attend a Scottish university? Have you been told you will not be receiving a degree classification? Already aware this is happening at Edinburgh and Strathclyde but keen to hear if this is happening elsewhere. Please feel free to DM me. Thanks!

Just found out my wee grannie has tested positive for coronavirus. I've not seen her since July so this just makes it harder because all I want to do is go and see her. She seems like she is in good spirit all things considered 💗💗💗

He was the absolute best of us. One of the greatest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing and working with. He still had so much to give the world.

I'd like to ask that woman a few questions along the lines of "how do you sleep at night?" knowing she did something like that to a young struggling family.
This isn't acceptable. Expecting Fringe reviewers to be fully flexible for ten hours a day, seven days a week and getting a £200 flat rate for a month at the fringe is just exploitative.
Well, it's finally happened. HR have been in touch. I've to clear my desk. Today is my last day.
I start my train driver training on Monday. It's been fun. ^Angus
Good to go to these things as a punter again and not have to find a nearby cafe with awful WiFi to file copy.

A friend made a very good point here. We still aren't aware of all the circumstances surrounding this. Very easy to speculate "illegal immigrants should be removed" but it may not even be the case.
Solidarity to everyone striking at STV tomorrow. Being a journalist is one of the best jobs in the world, but news publishers can't rest on those laurels. Loving your job doesn't pay the bills.
Hello all, just a wee line to say I'm going to be out of commission for about a week (at the moment) because some pins I got put in my ankle about three years ago have decided to make an appearance and I need surgery to take them out. I'll be in touch when I'm back on my feet.
On a job in Stirling (all will be revealed soon) and found a cafe which sells “school cake” but on a chopping board and I’m not sure how I feel about it.
