My ID was stolen immediately after I got my first permanent job. For four years, the crook buried me in debt. Samsung Galaxy phones, DSTV, clothing accounts. The police were utterly useless & kept asking me about "the scene of crime." I had never lost my ID.
I spent most of my student life traveling between Wits and my home (an RDP settlements on the outskirts of Vosloorus). The taxi drivers at Noord used to call the area "Maputo". Initially I thought it was about the social composition of area and the presence of Mozambican migrants
A single ticket from Fish Hoek to Mowbray costs R9. A trip by taxi costs more than double the amount. Uber will set you back R200. The destruction of rail infrastructure in this country is tantamount to a war on the poor.
If Coloured children who were born in the 2000s can carry out such an atrocious act against African children, what exactly are their parents teaching them? When are we going to break with this anti-blackness and superiority complex?
They also raise who are too scared to make mistakes. Too scared to draw outside the lines. Too scared to take risks. Too scared to discover & find themselves. Too scared until well into adulthood.
I don't want us to dismiss people's apprehensions about identity theft. It is real. It happens. It has detrimental consequences for victims.
What I am opposed to are solutions that only target a group of people.
I was called before the Samsung Galaxy phone was authorized. I told the store that this is fraud and they should stop the sale. But Cell C workers were so desperate for commission that they ignored me.
That's how this corruption works - people look the other way.
The fingerprints of the Big 4 auditing firms are all over our broken public institutions. PwC, KPMG, Deloitte, EY. The hands of auditors bear the marks of state capture. They enabled it and benefited from it. How do we hold these companies accountable?
Gayton McKenzie is bloody charismatic.
He uses his troubled past and Christianity to connect with people. He speaks different languages (at least 3). He presents easy (false) solutions to complex issues. He has zero progressive politics.
This is what makes him dangerous!
[WATCH] Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie shares a testimony of how God answered his mother's prayer after 24 years. He was speaking at

@CyrilRamaphosa
gave the economic ministers 2 weeks to deal with the rising cost of living. 42 days later, we haven't heard anything about this plan. We have another price hike on the horizon & food is simply unaffordable. Where is the plan?
Your parents send you to university to perform house-keeping duties for average boys who can't wake themselves up to study, organise their own study materials or make their own meals. How is doing at uni when she's doing so much reproductive labour?
During 1st & 2nd year at Wits, I was constantly traumatized by how white students (Indian & Coloured sometimes) would undermine black lecturers at first sight or encounter. "Does she even know what she's on about?" they'd say.
It makes me so angry that today's RDP houses are located further and further away from economic centres. People are dumped into the wilderness and their income is drained by transport costs.
Goodness, he is basically saying every the parties that are led by Africans and Coloureds are only interested in looting. Guys, don't vote for this racist party. There are options on the ballot. Don't give your vote to racists!
[ICYMI] "Why are they coming to the Western Cape? If they get that right, it's gonna be the biggest bank heist you've ever seen." - DA leader John Steenhuisen criticises new political parties gunning for the Western Cape.
#Newzroom405
The biggest lie tht childcare centres tell Black parents is that speaking multiple languages will confuse kids. Kids can speak multiple languages. We spoke Sesotho to mom & we'd switch to isisZulu when speaking to dad. We added English to the languages we knew already.
People often make fun of Naledi Pandor for her age, swollen legs and dress sense (all unfair really). I've never heard anyone criticize her mind. She takes the UNGA podium and gives a clear articulation of SA's foreign policy.
There was really no intention to honor the results. They never wanted a peaceful election. Every statement was about two-thirds majority or violence.
💔💔💔💔
This is very dangerous. We are a secular state. There should be a clear line between the church & the state. Chief Justice always oversteps the mark by praying, giving religious speeches and gifting bibles. SA is not a theocracy.
Yesterday Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng did something that has never been done before in Parliament- he asked 400 members from 14 parties to pray for 3 minutes. Then he knelt down to pray. SA is blessed to have a wise CJ that knows how to pray. Thank you CJ for your leadership 👍
Kanti who was responsible for flooding the Cape Flats with drugs at the height of the struggle against apartheid (the insurrectionary 80's)? Did the whites not flood the townships with drugs to quell our resistance against their system?
White 🇿🇦 don't:
1. Sell drugs to kasi kids
2. Traffic humans for cash
3. Scam innocent 🇿🇦
4. Refuse to pay TAX
5. Return black 🇿🇦 girls in bodybags
6. Fear roll-on
I panic everytime I see an email from Home Choice. I nearly lost my mind during that period. I managed to find a cellphone number and would sometime call it to direct all sorts of expletives towards her.
Credit bureaus had blacklisted me.
Yes, we also remember you as an academic who used the intellectual labour of her black research assistant & then refused to acknowledge her. The publisher had to force you to credit her in Women of Phokeng. You can speak Setswana & wouldn't have accessed the data without Mmantho!
I have lots of degrees but look up to John Steenhuisen as an experienced, quick witted, highly knowledgeable politician from whom I have learnt an enormous amount.
Air BnB has made Cape Town rentals completely unaffordable. A thriving tourism sector doesn't have to mean evictions and limited housing choices for citizens. An imaginative & pro-poor govt can promote tourism without dispossessing its most vulnerable citizens.
Thousands of people rallied against mass tourism in Barcelona, where the conversion of many homes to holiday apartments has driven up rents by almost 70%.
No amount of historical revisionism or new found love for blackness will change Buthelezi's role in history. We lived through the bullets, the blood, the children maimed and scores butchered in Thokoza, Katlehohong, Vosloorus, Swanieville, Boipatong etc etc. Siyamazi uShenge!
@bilzyb
The majority of Jordan's citizens are actually Palestinians. More than 50%. My Palestinian friends yearn for the homeland. That's why many Palestinian girls are named Haneen or Hanin. It means longing for the homeland.
Where were you in 2008? I volunteered at JD Dumane Clinic in Vosloorus which housed hundreds of people who were displaced primarily because they were suspected of not being SAn. Infants, newborns, pregnant women, disabled people. Multitudes were displaced. More than 60were killed
The most corrupt young leaders are those with some experience in leading SRCs - especially well resourced SRCs. It seems SRCs are training ground for future looters and corrupt politicians. Yoh!
My father spent more than a month at a public hospital recently. He does not have many complaints about his stay. He went to surgery and received care without us forking out a cent.
We can't afford to give up on public services. Public things are vital to democracy.
Is there any reason why South(ern) Africans don't get prefential pricing for access to historical/heritage sites? Why do we pay the same price as European and American tourists? Preferential pricing for locals is common practice all over the world.
The 'statistics' about 'rising incidents of anti-semitism' are sourced from the SA Jewish Board of Deputies. Their definition includes:
1. Criticism of Israel incl. stating that it is a settler-colonial project & occupying power
2. Peaceful action targeting Israel like boycotts
“In South Africa, there is no threat, harm…to the Jewish people” says Justice Minister
“There is no anti-Semitism in South Africa” Ronald Lamola tells Stephen Sackur, despite a reported rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the country since October 7
She refuses to fit into a masculine costume that demands that to be considered a good communicator, one must be boisterous, loud and evasive. She communicates with precision. ❤️
The irony of all of this is that the RDP house was my parent's pride and joy. We had spent years renting a small room and sometime at a shack settlement with no toilet or a tap. That 2 roomed house with a big yard was our breakthrough.
"When Eskom was run by two white men, both of whom were widely assumed to be competent, Stage Six load shedding was the norm. The politicians and managers who have turned this around are all black." Steven Friedman
When we said we refuse to celebrate Buthelezi, Ndlozi told us about black self hate & self negation. Now Ringo tells us about self hate when we talk about the VBS crooks & how swindled the rural masses. This version of Blacks Consciousness is straight from the dustbin.
Being bi or lesbian isn't something that people resort to or settle for bcoz "abafaba basile". It's a perfectly valid way to live & enact sexuality. This portrayal of lesbians is similar to "all-you-need-is-good-dick" rubbish which has resulted in th death of too many queer womxn
This statement is one of those lies you repeat so often that it becomes true. ANC doesn't have great policies. The deindustrialisation of the East Rand is not a sign of good policies. It's a product of bad neoliberal policy choices.
So that "does she even know what Panado is" is harmful and takes me back there. Black women (and men) are always assumed incompetent and clueless until proven otherwise. It's tiring.
Wits flatly refused to grant us residence because we stayed less than 35km away. I resorted to sleeping in the library and "bathing" in the bathrooms at umthombo building. I squatted with friends.
Ntsiki Mazwai doesn't deserve attention. When last did she create anything that is artistically notable? Poetry, music? When was the last time. She just thrives on trashing people. Her comment about Malema's exposes her very shallow gender politics.
The name "Maputo" had nothing to do with the social composition of our area. It was a critique of the post apartheid planning. My home is almost 32km from Jozi...the furthest settlement in Vosloorus at the time. Rdp houses come with the burden of paying more for transport.
The workers assigned to your rooms are sometimes held responsible for your theft. Just like when you dodge bills at restaurants, workers pay the price.
My 2-year old son & I have now fully recovered from Covid-19. I had mild symptoms (sore throat, headaches, dry cough). My son had it bad and had to be rushed to ER. The point is, do all you can to protect your loved ones. Wear your masks, wash hands, avoid big social gatherings.
In the absence of strong mass organizations of the people, we are stuck with corrupt populists who latch onto our pain and suffering to advance their interests. We deserve better.
Anele Mda received 3724 votes in the 2024 elections. She's now using dog whistle politics to gain traction. It paid off for the Patriotic Alliance.
There's nothing progressive about her divisive anx hate-driven politics. Pathetic!
The problem with activists today is that we are often thinking about what future generations will say about us. We lack authenticity because we are already thinking about how we will quoted. That's why we speak of "gallows" in a country where the death sentence doesn't apply.
This mess is exactly what we need take the National Treasury on for the budget cuts.
They are effectively de-funding democracy.
StatsSA, CCMA, IEC.
These are casualties of austerity.
They cut ✂️, we bleed🩸
So no one at the IEC, no polling analyst, office administrator, no data scientist, no commissioner reckoned in a meeting, "you know, with an added third ballot we're increasing our workload by a third."
On many occasions, the drivers would refuse to be allocated passengers from our area. They complained about how the trip guzzled petrol and precious time. A 2-3 hour wait for a taxi was the norm. The worst times were Fridays and month-end.
Today I witnessed multitudes walking home after servicing the economy in different parts of Cape Town. Among them were those with physical disabilities.
No social housing near places of work. Public transport is in shambles. Ordinary people are at the mercy of taxi lords.
When Ekurhuleni had a water crisis we had scheduled water cutoffs (9pm -5am daily). We knew which locations would be affected in advance. Water pressure was reduced. Rules on gardens were introduced. The city didn't play in fining water guzzlers. Cape Town is flat footed!
These perceptions shifted for 2 reasons. 1. The bank eviction wave that saw many home owners being thrown out to even smaller alternative accommodation 2. The rapid manner in which the houses in Ext 28 became "big houses" with 3 or 4 bedrooms became a source of envy.
I applied for my passport 11 days ago. Today, I received an sms telling me that it is ready for collection. It took me less than 2 hours to apply for the document. A lot of things might be broken in SA but some things work and that's important.
@HomeAffairsSA
Very incorrect and ahistorical placard. Docile ancestors are only found in the colonizer's dreams. Our ancestors fought before capture, on the ships, across the Atlantic, on the plantations. Everywhere!
A pregnant woman was denied food for 3 days while in a Soweto public health facility named after maimed freedom fighter Bheki Mlangeni. She returned home only to be assaulted by the police and shunned by neighbours who accused her of spreading coronavirus. Depressing.
I need people to watch the interview where Thabo Bester's mother talks about how Bester was conceived from rape. It was violent and painful. Listen to the details she gives.
Stop making her relive the ordeal by commenting on how Bester's hair and features look South Asian!
I present to you Comrade, Doctor, emerging Professor Themba Masondo. Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from Wits University!!! Dr
Themba Masondo 🤸🏿♀️🤸🏿♀️🤸🏿♀️
Marikana is Zuma's massacre. He presided over the massacre. He appointed the police commissioner. He presided over the militarization of police. He backed attempts to deny the massacre's significance by calling it a tragedy. You cannot divorce what unfolded on that day from Zuma.
Given the current political developments, it is important to note that Jacob Zuma presided over the political machinery that massacred the mineworkers. Despite the attempts to politically dry-clean and project him as a long-standing revolutionary, Marikana Day reminds us that he
He is writing this from a country where a Palestinian kid was stabbed multiple times for just being Palestinians. He also writing from a country that is also sending billions of dollars in artillery to shell what remains of Palestine.
I am an assistant professor at Columbia Business School. I am a father, a husband, an uncle, and a son. I am a forty-year-old man, and last week I found myself crying in front of a group of complete strangers.
Our plight was worsened by the reality that the residents of the different parts of Vosloo really resented Ext 28 (the RDP area). For many who lived in bank financed homes ("izindlu ezama bond"), the settlement was a nightmare that undermined property value.
RISE Mzansi's leadership has a progressive impulse. Even if they haven't yet formulated a position on an issue, their response is likely to be progressive. We need them in the national assembly & in provincial legislatures.
We'd be queuing for hours....university bags on our backs, wailing babies, heavy groceries and all. Nobody would want to take a chance to load these people who stayed the furthest from all places in Vosloorus. We got used to the treatment
These are the names of about 700 people who died in the violence between '90 & '95. The list doesn't incl people who died across Katorus & the East Rand. When Boipatong happened, many people had already lost their lives. The bloodletting continued some months after April 1994.
We seem to think our problems can be reduced to the relationship btwn citizens & govt. A broken social contract as it were.
The reality is more daunting. As citizens, we are simply not accountable. We litter with no shame. We don't observe traffic rules. We drink & drive. 👇🏿
The feeling you get as a woman owning your own place! Our mothers and grandmothers couldn't do this. They couldn't own property. They were regarded in law as perpetual minors. Yet, here we are!!! ❤️❤️❤️
People who write things like this either have no sense of history or have little value for the lives of ordinary people. We lost childhoods, yrs of schooling. The stench of death hovered all over the Rand. Railway lines tell stories of horror. Buthelezi a co-author of our misery.
Respect to Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi for his invaluable service to our nation. A wise elder, his steady counsel is often unseen, but beyond value. A Statesman. A giant among the political pygmies of modern politics. Salute. 🇿🇦
Educated black people with no social consciousness are really annoying. You go to the country's most expensive universities and come out with zero social consciousness and zero politics. What a shame.
My mother passed on 11 years ago. On most days I'm ok with this. But being home alone, sick, with lots of work and having to care for a sick 6 month old makes me wish I could call her for some help. Her name was Mapaseka
Abasifuni labantu. They act like their rage is against ANC corruption but the real issue here is that they are still grieving that we overthrew their system.
I am worried about these conspiracies because they are fundamentally disempowering .
We voted. What we see on the boards is a product of our votes.
There's no dark criminal network here and there wasn't one in 2016 (local) or 2019 when results looked different.
The IEC system is evidently being operated by an organised dark criminal network that is engineering a coalition down our throats between the DA and a specific faction of the ANC
@lungile_mashele
It's called apartheid spatial planning. The better schools aren't in Khayelitsha or Mannenberg. They are in historically white suburbs. And although post apartheid schools are much better (well equipped, clean, sports facilities), the inequality persists.
My son asked what is voting. I told him we will be choosing a new president. "What's wrong with Ramaphosa - is he sick?"
Eish he is my date to the voting booth today.
I read tweets where women r making sexual advances at famous men like Siya etc. It's all harmless banter. I smile because it's nice to see women owning their sexuality like that. But my mind always asks: 'what if it was a man saying these things to a woman'. This ruins everything
I'm waiting my turn to vote. A drunk woman on the queue says "we are here to finish the tender system. We are tired". She's drunk but her demand is sober.
Williams' testimony should send a clear message to
@MYANC
. Some of the so called cadres you've deployed in the state are just insecure, incompetent & vile. Faith Muthambi is debris, rubble.
I am Tintswalo even though I was born 8 years before democracy. The ANC's strides are undeniable. But I also know that disastrous neoliberal policies, corruption and rent-seeking have squandered our liberation.
The problem starts with the tendency to treat SA and apartheid as an exception and not one case in the bigger history of battles against settler colonialism and imperialism in Africa and beyond.
@Nkanyiso_ngqulu
I resorted to just hopping on any taxi to Vosloorus. Mailula and Rockville are closer. I took nice walks and got myself a nice lean body, small waist and firm bum in the process 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The EFF SG spoke really well about the need to accept the results overall and dealing with irregularities on a case by case basis. He also says the IEC is a credible institution & lunatics must not plunge SA into a civil war
People are willing to accept (claim) that the guy accused of CIT heists was doing the ANC's fundraising but it was just 5 mins ago when they insisted that their criminal cigarette smuggler is innocent because no court of law found him guilty. Garbage politics!
He was just looking for the right moment to say
#FreeZuma
without the burden of hypocrisy. Fighters are like a tap that is turned on and off according to the whims of the leader.
No soldiers on our streets! Otherwise, we are joining. All fighters must be ready... they won't kill us all. We need a political solution to a political problem, not soldiers.
#NoToSoldiers
People who didn't live thru violence....whose childhoods weren't punctuated by sounds of bullets. Who didn't have to gather piles of lifeless bodies decorated with bullets...will always glorify & romanticise war. Peacetime heroes are always singing battle cries.
Zille's article has racist undertones. The idea that constitutionalism & rights-based struggles are foreign concepts to th African is at odds with history. She speaks as if we never contested or sought to expand th very meaning of liberty. But we did
Yesterday I heard someone characterizing the MKP as an ultra-left party. This is incorrect, man.
They want embolden unelected hereditary leadership. They oppose the sexual and reproductive freedom that were won through struggle.
Weird.
"The DA is making a statement about itself; that it doesn't trust our people. It doesn't trust our capacity to handle our elections...The people they trust is effectively the white world."
Thabo Mbeki. ❤️❤️❤️
A taxi driver was sentenced to 20 years imprisonement for torching trains in Cape Town. He did it because he earns more when the trains are derailed. So,I am not entirely convinced about the argument that taxis don't benefit from the destruction of their cheaper competition.
The Sisulu children earned their stripes as activists and revolutionaries. There are other Zuma children with activist credentials. Dudizile is not one of them.
It was a spirit of jubilation when Cde Albertina Sisulu,Cde Max Sisulu and Cde Lindiwe Sisulu we sworn as Member of Parliament of 1994.
The feeling is the same now Commander
@DZumaSambudla
is sworn in as a Member of Parliament as uMkhonto WeSizwe MK Party.
1994 to 2024
