Thrilled to share our lab’s first paper in which we establish genome-wide CRISPR screening within a single mouse! We are so excited about the power of this platform to enable high-throughput genetic dissection of diverse phenomena within a living mammal.
That women and underrepresented groups manage to persist in science despite the numerous barriers thrown up in their faces speaks volumes to their qualifications.
I’m thrilled to announce I’ll be joining
@MITBiology
and
@kochinstitute
as an Assistant Professor! It’s a tremendous honor to return to the community that first inspired and fostered my scientific career. Seeking people to join us in the adventure ahead!

We are thrilled to share our development of genome-wide CRISPR screening within a living mouse! Our approach is accessible to diverse phenotypes and we look forward to the many insights now achievable with high-throughput functional genomics in an organ!
The barriers and ramifications of reporting sexual misconduct are still prohibitively high. We will not see lasting change until the majority in positions of power—not just exceptional brave individuals—actively support and protect those harmed. Silence is part of the problem.
Angelika occupied a league of her own, with an infectious energy, brilliant mind, bottomless heart, and tenacious grit. Her loss is irreplaceable and far too soon, but may we all carry part of her legacy. Thank you, Angelika, for everything. Rest assured we will keep pipetting ❤️
Our lab is hiring! Seeking post-docs and students interested in developing in vivo genome-wide screens and gene delivery tools to understand and modulate cell cycle states in the context of organ injury, regeneration, and cancer. Please spread the word!

Enjoyed a few fantastic days on Cape Cod for our first ever lab retreat! Supplemented our science with excellent masterclasses, food, and nature and discovered fame at a karaoke bar (not pictured). So grateful for this amazing group and excited for what lies ahead!
To anyone else whose science (and self) have suffered from the poor parental instinct of B6 mice, I'm amazed by the extent to which adding shredded paper/ecobedding improves nest building and dramatically increases litter survival. At this point I’m tempted to try sleeping in it.
We are privileged to continue honoring Angelika’s inspiring legacy of mentorship and discovery with the third annual Angelika Amon Young Scientist Award! Please encourage PhD students outside the US who embody her infectious passion for biology to apply!
Jaw-dropping intravital imaging of mouse embryonic development at cellular resolution via abdominal windows. I am unceasingly amazed and inspired by the innovations to study mammalian biology in context. 🤯
Excited to share our work in

The inevitable backlash from those seeking to protect and enable ill-gotten and abused power is all the more reason why we cannot stop fighting for change.
Great work from John Replogle and the late
@AngelikaAmon
toward resolving the paradox of aneuploidy in cancer! Cell cycle delays caused by chromosome imbalance suffice to confer resistance to chemotherapy. Treatment thus converts Achilles' heel into asset.
Excited to have our lab's vision featured alongside other emerging labs in
@CellStemCell
Voices! Thank you
@CellCellPress
for bringing visibility to young investigators in a time when traditional avenues are limited!
Honored to be chosen alongside these amazing women for the Future Founders Program! Grateful to

scRNA-seq of human embryos revealing mosaic, typically mitotic, aneuploidy in 80% (!!) of embryos, corroborating prior observations of high aneuploidy in development. It is remarkable how mitotic errors are so pervasive (and/or better tolerated) at such a formative stage!
Our study of aneuploidy in human preimplantation embryos is now published in
@genomeresearch
. We combined signatures of chromosome-wide gene expression and allelic imbalance to discover meiotic and mitotic-origin aneuploidy in single-cell RNA-seq data:
The past few weeks have left me especially grateful for the constant support of some incredible friends and colleagues. In a year of unrelenting tragedy, it is reassuring to remember that humanity is equally relentless. There can never be too much kindness.
Professor Kristin Knouse studies how tissues sense and respond to damage. Learn about the connections between regeneration and cancer at SCIENCE with/in/sight on October 13.

Detailed analysis of somatic mutagenesis across mammals supports inverse relationship between mutation rate and lifespan! Could explain why short-lived mammals still get cancer and begs question of how long-lived mammals better maintain their genomes.
It is exhausting until you stop caring. People are always going to talk. The more women (and men) we have leading by example to show that the capacity to think, do experiments, and be a good colleague is wholly uninfluenced by one’s appearance the quieter these voices become.
Incredible how thin the space is for women to just be themselves. Be put together, but not attractive. Speak up for yourself, but not too loud. Friendly, but not flirty. Send photos for a seminar, but not “the wrong photo” - or people will still say did it wrong. Seems exhausting
To
#liver
and other organophiles who have struggled with
#immunofluorescence
due to high autofluorescence: we've started using the quenching kit from
@VectorLabsUS
and it can really help increase signal:noise for diffuse antigens. An unpaid endorsement!
Very exciting talk from former
@MIT
graduate student Katie Bouman on the massive group effort that led to the first-ever image of a black hole. A truly impressive feat of collaborative science.
Immune cells also partake in the ever popular phenomenon of liver zonation! Beautiful images and experiments by
@anita__gola

Fantastic piece from Oceane Marescal and
@iaincheeseman
on the ubiquitous yet mysterious cell cycle state known as quiescence! This review captures our current understanding across contexts and highlights the many fundamental and fascinating unknowns.
I don't know of anyone mentally or physically stronger than my cousin Kyle, who by age 12 had become a two-time cancer survivor. A heartwarming reminder of the lifetimes that can be saved by commitments to basic research, blood drives, and beyond.
Sexual harassment isn't driven by a desire for women. It's motivated by a desire for power over women.
Data: assertive women face more sexual harassment—especially in male-dominated workplaces.
The problem is not self-control. It's a culture that normalizes control over women.
