I've just received an email complaining that there's too much consent in my sex scenes, and tbh I'm really struggling with why the hell you'd write that down and send it to someone.

...I have just heard of the Knot In My Name campaign. You know how AI scrapes sites like AO3 for machine training? The idea is to flood AO3 with omegaverse to the point that all AI text generators everywhere will default to fated mates, breeding, and of course knotting.

This is beyond disgusting. Cis is a word meaning not trans. I'm a cisgender woman. Cisalpine Gaul was a place. Cis-trans isomerism is a chemistry term, Musk is a massive bigot, and this is wrong as hell.

I'm seeing a lot of authors on here apologising for promoting their forthcoming books right now. I've *also* had literally dozens of lovely messages in the past 9 months from readers saying books have got them through the ongoing shitshow. Stop apologising! Books are needed!

I feel I should note something. Many Brits are not going to be here for mawkish nonsense and receiving personal condolences and whatever. But this is also going to be a really fundamental national upheaval, and we don't have to be monarchists to feel weird about that.

Another Guardian article on romance, this one claiming "The forgettability of romantic fiction is part of the point." I mean, whatever, but in my experience romance readers can tell you the name of the hero's brother-in-law from a book you released in 2013 without even *trying*.

Here's my specific problem: Consent isn't an administrative preliminary to sex, it is a way of checking your partner is getting what they want. The way consent is portrayed in sex scenes is a huge part of characterisation.

Consent in a sex scene is not just a tick box (or if it is the author is doing it wrong). It's a tool for using a sex scene to develop the relationship in whatever way, and to inform the reader about character.

There is a very clear continuum that runs from transphobia through homophobia through anti-abortion, divorce restrictions, and even into bans on Black hair styles. That continuum is the 'law' that straight cis white men get to dictate everyone else's bodies.

Other MCs might prefer not to talk during sex at all. Maybe consent is conveyed in body language and eye contact. Maybe characters are operating with care. Maybe they aren't and it's not sought. Each of those choices tells you about the characters and their position right then.

Reading a romance novel where they're ignoring the just-delivered pizza in favour of having sex and I'm like "yes, but...pizza..."

A long-standing pillar of the state is about to fall. That means something, even if you don't agree with how any of this shit is propped up.

I am overjoyed to reveal the cover of Subtle Blood by @LadyTiferet . Starring Kim Secretan (reformed spy/liar/git, an honest book dealer these days) and Will Darling (also an honest bookseller, the knife is just for emotional support) (Releases 23 June, preorders to come.)

Every now and again I see writing advice tweets about how prologues and epilogues are Bad because Reasons, and I am just here to tell you that they're bloody great.

I'm reading a UK-set contemporary by a US author and... it's just amazing to me that you would write an entire book set in a real country and not get *someone* from there to read it over. We have a population of 66 million. I'm sure one of us was free.

Mr KJC witnessed a man at the school gates loudly mocking a 5yo boy for kissing his mum goodbye. "Oooh, does diddums want his mummy?" Delighted to report the boy in question, my son's Worst Friend, promptly kicked Toxic Dad very hard in the shins. The mum did not apologise. :D

Reading a billionaire CEO romance and stalled on "his investors may pull out of the deal because of his playboy reputation". There's a lot of implausible things I'll swallow in romance, but "billionaire being held accountable by other rich people" is apparently no longer one.

I've put The Magpie Lord on FREE for the duration. Magic, mayhem, m/m romance. (Amazon are taking ages to price match--report a lower price or grab the mobi at Gumroad.) Usual stores epub or mobi:

Today I learned that a double breasted frock coat was often known as a Prince Albert. So I *will* be writing a Victorian story in which someone walks into a club sporting a Prince Albert, with no further explanation, and you can't stop me.

I looked at EL James' new masterpiece, The Missus (take a moment here to get over just how bad the title is) and the blurb says: "He now has to wed her, at the sharp end of a shotgun." The what end of a what was that?

Hey @samatlounge seen this ad? From today’s online edition of The Times. I am not sure where to start! Isn’t romance one of the biggest selling genres in fiction?

Me at hairdresser's: Sorry, I'm kind of zoned out today. Hairdresser: No, that's fab. To be honest I much prefer to concentrate on what I'm doing and not talk. Some of my clients bring a book. Me: be right back, just going to book appointments with you for the next five years.
