There's one caveat to this. While it's generally better to use some measure of household income or individual consumption, it is very hard to find these statistics over long time frames. So gdp/capita is superior when making historical comparisons

I want to believe people who care about the deficit actually think it has some intrinsic value, but it's hard because every time I see it brought up it's to call for cuts. Increasing revenues has the equivalent effect. Today, the amount of uncollected taxes is 50% of the deficit!

In fact, it's a caution against complex gov't plans to technocratically manage competition 90% of the problems with Private Medicare are solved by replacing administered pricing with competitive bidding, & replacing risk adjustment with a system of reinsurance. Simple & elegant
