MY BOOK IS OUT TODAYY ✨✨I loved writing this book and I hope you can feel that - it’s a project from my heart + hope it’s a valuable contribution to the conversation around housing, how it impacts every part of how we live and how we must make home a right for everyone ✨✨✨
I know this has been said many times but i will never get tired of being reminded that they really tried to tell us this woman was ugly, looool (this is literally szn 1 ep 1 when they are trying establish her as peak unattractive too?!)
We are living in a murderous crisis that commits violence against us every day - stories like this are evidence of a gov whose negligence + lack of care have allowed out housing market to go haywire + put all tenants at the sharp end of enduring it
She's best known for her campaign

, but now
@theslumflower
wants to talk about the joys of living alone — and how you only really discover who you are if you have time apart from friends and family
The new R Kelly doc is so incredibly depressing - just witnessing a infrastructure around him seemingly hellbent on keeping this open secret, while women yell the same thing over and over again (and the details of the alleged sex cult are just...)
Sky sports is already doing elite filler countdown content - ex neighbour of Raheem Eileen Langdon giddily telling us how he once said...her garden looked nice akjxjsks INJECT IT
The current cost of renting crisis is devastating Greater Manchester’s communities. It is vital that England’s Metro Mayors have the power to slam the brakes on local rents and give our key workers the breathing space they need in their community
He hasn’t got in DESPITE his racism/sexism/privilege/complete disregard for social justice, they’ve actively all helped him get here, + the deeply cruel + self serving actions of our politicians over the last few years have paved the way for this utterly crushing political moment
Any discussion around safety must be truly intersectional and these moments in time must remind us that not advocating for those most at risk puts us all in danger 🙇🏽♀️
I actually don’t mind about tweeting into an echo chamber of Labour supporters online because after weeks of canvassing + years of reporting + realising that this country has shifted to the right with breakneck speed EXCUSE ME if I find respite in a little pocket of solidarity
Sickening + beyond disappointing see Keir Starmer wilfully rejecting the clear relationship between the activism of BLM + the calls for structural dismantling across everything from the police, housing, education + the justice system (for eg) that we so desperately need in the UK
Have been thinking about home, the housing crisis and the stories we take with us for most of my career and pleased to say this book will be an exploration of all those thoughts!! V happy and excited :')

@galdemzine
news is rlly sad but the impact it had on reframing conversations around media, the community, optimism + opportunities it provided for so many first time writers was an unrivalled success
this raises loads of imp q’s about 1) why the rush to dramatise stories while they are STILL unfolding? 2) why is there such bloodlust for black + brown trauma in the name of “educating” the public when gov who have power clearly already kno and don’t seem to be listening? …
I think mumsy has completely recovered from Covid after a proper nightmarish few months!! She was hospitalised in April (had pre-existing conditions) + couldn’t speak/breathe but back to singing to herself + has her full laugh back 🥺☺️ thanks so much to everyone who sent love ❤️
IT’S MY BIRTHDAY AND FEELING GROWN AND SEXY CAN’T LIE I AM PROUD I’M ACCOMPLISHED AND HAVE MANAGED NOT TO BE A BITTER OLD PRICK DESPITE 34 YEARS ON THIS CLAPPED ISLAND HERE IS PROOF I’M CUTE AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN OK BYE
use an spf in your moisturiser, hydrate always, support your union, tip your waitress, help ppl when they drop something in front of you, bring ppl in, talk about money, stop listening to jess glynne
I truly do not think it’s off key in any way to cut ppl off for voting Tory like...you voted for policies that kill people my guy we cannot be mates ur psychotic??
god, this news about the passing of the pioneering, sweet, and always kind jamal edwards has made me feel so deeply sad. jamal was a proper fan in a time where it felt like you could actually touch the thing you were fan of, and i am so so grateful to have known him. RIP <3
Most stressful thing I did to pass the time this year was memorise the answers from an episode of jeopardy to freak my babes out but he really thinks I’m a genius now + I heard him telling his his mum + he keeps wanting to watch another one and I keep saying...I’m not in the mood
so typical tho isn’t it: “ethnics” (read:black men) frequent chicken shops and are targeted by the home office...a blonde white girl films the space for bants and she gets a fucking show commissioned lol god what a time
I am so, so, terrified for the working class black and brown communities on the frontline right now because what other conclusion is there to come to but that the state means to kill us?
When you consider the CONTEXT of this, that 1. privileged ppl can brazenly dismiss due process in the midst of a crisis and 2. MP’s can publicly answer tweets like this when people wait months for any contact re: issues of life and death this is is...whew
For over 2 years in Brixton, the local community have been fighting a Texan millionaire’s attempt to build a vanity tower block that would tear the soul out of the iconic market and turbo-charge gentrification.
Tonight, the community have won. The application has been withdrawn.
Club spaces have always taught us something about connection and community cos they are underrated sites of social change...I've never been to a club where the presence of police has made me feel safer
helped make a doc on grime for sky arts after months interviewing some of my fav ppls, bonding with Wiley, learning that almost everyone's fav clash is skepta v devilman, and stratford rex is a kids soft play place now lol (called generation grime, 90mins, not terrible)💪🏽💪🏽
Being officially unlawful for landlords to refuse tenants because they’re in receipt of housing benefit is huge! UK housing continues to be rampantly structurally classist + racist but need to learn from these wins + how to replicate them. housing activists are my heroes tbh🙈💞
there was a rumour at my school that if you drank 10 cans of nurishment in a row you’d get a six pack + all the get hench or die trying desi year 11 boys started puking brown milk in the corridors so we had to have an assembly debunking it loool london schools 😍
100 years since the Addison Act, a bittersweet look at social housing from me: looking at its negligent decimation, the relationship with immigrant communities + precarious housing, what is lost, + magic of musical communities sharing culture
After lots of 🥴 + support by my friends who are also going to publish wicked books in due time, happy to say I’m officially repped by
@FelicityBryan
which is gonna the beginning of a JOURNEY pls support me lol
Sorry but anyone criticising the diet part of the doc is ? Do u rlly think beyonce just cares about body image for post pregnancy vanity as opposed to idk, being an athlete preparing for the performance of her life
So embarrassed that JK Transphobe was so vocal in her support for The Good Immigrant. Hope future copies will have her co-sign redacted + we can use our platforms to renounce her comments, cos trust me no one wants ur weak ~solidarity~ if it’s not with our trans sisters too
Mad that anyone could rlly say journalism is a level playing field when after 10 years in it rates have stayed the same/got worse ppl expect you to monetise ur personal life as editorial lifeblood n professional trauma is expected to be shrugged off so as to not look “difficult”
Brothers Liam and Dijon were in Deptford outside a Nisa, fist bumped each other and were tackled to the floor by the MET who thought they were exchanging drugs. They allege that officers used unnecessary force. A FIST BUMP
Trans women, migrant women, etc have long been telling us that the world is dangerous, that they are at disproportionate threat + the same people who denied their legitimate concerns are now asking for support - we learn from solidarity + systems of care are built from listening
On the anniversary of a tragedy what can we do but give thanks to the community? For the grace, to the first responders, for continuing to fight, to all those who are working tirelessly for justice - human rights lawyers, activists, volunteers, artists + above all, families ❤️
I love this cos at least it’s transparent about the fantasy + artifice of homes as commodity but mostly because it actually feels FUN after the tedium of perfectly curated Kim k nothingness or laborious, over designed maximalism by celebs trying to prove they have ~taste~
wow Beyoncé rlly inspires to me to be great u kno :’) just lucky that when I say that I mean like…wear mascara more often and finish reading a book I’m stuck on let’s gooooo ✈️
the team did great tbh Pickford my fock off king Kane my lovable bfg Sterling with the magic feet Loftus Cheek peng ting of the highest order Maguire the cement headed nutter yeh I’ll buy ur shinies anyday
I mean 43% of Brits thought colonialism was “a good thing” in 2015 so yes, I am unsurprised that there is more evidence supporting the idea that this country is largely, clapped
So I wrote this a few years ago and has been uploaded again I guess thanks to Windrush stories - it's about my nanaji, being a Sikh in Britain in the 70s, the trauma of shaving his beard, and thinking that a racist slur was the name of a co-worker because he heard it so much
@TherealNihal
No! It actively harms us to have Asians in politics that lobby against the rights of our - + other - communities of colour. Having an asian Home Sec that advocates for detention, aggressive immigration policies, etc conjures more shame than inspiration + we lose out double
I am so so depressed at how sinister this gov can be about basic need + what a gut punch for activists realising that reasoning over bigger policy issues seem impossible when ppl at this point are just advocating to...eat
use an spf in your moisturiser, hydrate always, support your union, tip your waitress, help ppl when they drop something in front of you, bring ppl in, talk about money, stop accepting mbe's
Lost £1200 in work this week just as freelancing was finally picking up after a brutal January and...I’m quite fucked but thinking of how really precarious workers will fare within a structure not designed to support them in extenuating circumstances, + weak/no union support 🙇🏽♀️
I remember when I asked a guy I was seeing to buy me a cake from a cafe on his way to mine and instead he took it upon himself to buy me a “cheaper and healthier” option which was...a bell pepper
Had a bittersweet time exploring the decimation of social housing, the magic of cultural, musicals + artistic communities born from estates, + mourned the regeneration of my old one in lieu of new developments 😔 lots to say about this but the doc airs next week if of interest
Wow witnessing Beyoncé really is just seeing what is possible in this life like u kno u are just seeing perfection and joy and art and ideas and this is where creative imagination can lead u + yeh anyway I cried she’s the greatest artist on EARTH
Grenfell shone a light on past, present and future social housing fuckery - lots of battles across the UK are still being fought for safe housing, so in solidarity with residents mobilising and making themselves loud💪🏽
i really enjoyed when ppl tried to drag alesha dixon for being in a park with her family during lockdown 1 when she should have been isolating and she was like...that's my garden looool
It is thanks to tireless campaigning work that we see the end of no fault evictions but be aware that rent hikes act as backdoor eviction tactics by landlords + recent data from Shelter shows that tenants who report disrepair are twice as likely to be evicted in retaliation
Feeling so sad about who + what sets the political agenda in this country (+ being tired/emotional amplifies the initial physical deflation) but yes, I truly do believe that we move, communities will save us, + anger can be v effective for activism...but cool to cry first lol
The contributions of the colonies in both world wars is still grossly underrepresented but just reminding you that hello 1.3 million Indian soldiers served in WW1, more than 70k died + Sikh 'lion' soldiers often used traditional weapons + looked like this
Last month I went to Spanish town to interview one of my fav artists,
@originalkoffee
:’) grateful + humbled to be invited into her home, school + life to meet her Mum, spent three days with her, + write about it 🙏🏽
freelancing for...seven years now and trust me, only dickheads angry at your thrive think it's lame to tweet that you're available for commissions/are struggling/looking for copywriting work because literally no pride in struggling silently lol grow up
Theresa May’s policies have been evil - as Home Secretary and PM, have affected the most vulnerable groups in the UK, tore through communities and all with the steely stupid resolve of a woman possessed - if defending her is the hill u wanna die on then, gosh
do ch 4 *need* to show white people gleefully calling us pakis for over an hour for ~edgy~ content masquerading as a searing take on race relations or ?
IMAGINE having to fight against this level of flagrant corruption?? After everything, you’re reminded in the most brutal way about where power lies, how you can’t poss prep for this level of disrespect + that ppl really think they can get away with negligence that kills us
