If you’re familiar with the work of the estate agents Foxtons, you’ll be delighted to learn that a tribunal has ordered them to refund tenants whom they charged illegal fees.
The case is a good reminder of what protections you have under the Tenant Fees Act. 🧵
Amazing news! Thanks to over 8000 of us, TFL have announced a ban on all short term lets on the network.
It means disgusting adverts encouraging landlords to ditch long term tenants in favour of a quick buck won’t be on our tubes, buses and trains.
Share to celebrate!
Even the Queen agrees with banning letting fees! The Bill got Royal Assent today and becomes the Tenant Fees Act 2019. From 1 June fees can't be charged on new tenancies.
Thanks to the 1000s of renters who signed petitions, emailed MPs & responded to consultations

The eviction ban ended in September and Universal Credit is not sufficient to cover average monthly rents.
Those who have lost income due to the pandemic are at risk of losing their homes.

🎉From today renters will have more money in their pockets when moving home as rip-off letting fees are banned!

Bills are skyrocketing and so are rents -
#Section21
makes it harder for tenants to oppose rent increases. As
@BootstrapCook
points out it lets landlords evict you for using benefits. We are campaigning to

This is a birthday we never hoped to see. We are calling on

NEW: Boris Johnson is considering allowing 50-year mortgages that can be passed down from parents to their children in a bid to help people onto the housing ladder.
No10 thinks it is one option that would allow people to borrow more cash.
The cost of living is skyrocketing and so are rents. Last week

GREAT NEWS: The eviction ban has been extended and you can now safely stay in your home until August.🏘️
To the thousands of renters who emailed their MP, shared their story, or chipped in to fund the campaign - THANK YOU! 🥳🎉
📢 BREAKING NEWS FOR RENTERS 📢
We are suspending evictions from social & private rented accommodation by a further two months.
Eviction hearings will not be heard in courts until the end of August and no-one will be evicted from their home this summer due to coronavirus.
Here's the government announcement:
✅legislation to

power to evict without giving reason
✅open-ended tenancies for all private renters
✅preventing landlords from evicting tenants at short notice

At last, we get the government's proposals on improving security: 3-year tenancies, though no word on limiting rent rises - another reason renters are forced to move. We'll keep pushing for them to

Thank you

for talking about the struggle for so many parents to provide a stable home. Moving all the time should not be normal. The government needs to end unfair evictions to give everyone a stress-free home. Will you help us?

Half of London's councils failed to fine a single criminal landlord in the past year.
Laws to protect tenants need to be enforced if they're to mean anything. The good news is the Mayor of London could make a huge difference with one policy
Now the eviction ban has been lifted, 55,000 people are at risk of losing their homes.

As the landlord association says, the private rental market is getting bigger. That means it has never been more important to update the law and get rid of unfair Section 21 evictions.

Four times as many under-45s rent from a private landlord than a housing association - where's our giveaway?
We welcome the focus on renters in
@sianberry
's campaign.
We need a London Mayor for renters. With sky high rents and section 21 'no fault' evictions still in place renter affordability and security should be top of the London Mayor's to do list.
London needs a Mayor who will stand with renters.
That means bringing down rent, protections from eviction, and strengthening our rights.
As a renter myself, I know what a difference this will make to Londoners.

THREAD: HOW TO NEGOTIATE A LOWER RENT 🤑🧵
The rent is, beyond doubt, too damn high. But renters don’t always have to pay what the landlord demands. Here’s a thread with some tips to save money on your biggest expense. 1/
New polling by
@Shelter
shows that a quarter of renters don't complain about repairs because of fear of eviction. This shows why Section 21 needs to be abolished now. It would give renters the security of mind to get potentially dangerous repairs fixed
We're still waiting to hear how the government plans to help the self-employed pay their rent - in the meantime here's a round up of what help the government is offering renters so far from
@Victoria_Spratt
That's more like it: all eviction cases in the court system to be suspended for at least three months.
Thanks to everyone who kept the pressure on to hold the government to its word. Now for
#rentrelief
to stop renters getting into debt
More here:
If we were taxing these hoarders properly they wouldn't be calling the offers they're getting "silly", or their prospective customers "detached from reality" - because long term unoccupied stock would mean bankruptcy
Breaking: The law to ban arbitrary evictions has been delayed to Autumn. Meanwhile, every 15 minutes this Summer a renter will be packing their bags - not to go on holiday but because they are being evicted from their home by a section 21 notice.
@BenTwomeyUK
Pro tip: if your letting agent tells you your tenancy is not a Housing Act tenancy so they can charge fees like this, and you're a) a human person* and b) paying less than £100,000 a year in rent, then they're breaking the law.

📢London rents are out of control
Renting alone is unaffordable - and it’s worse for women.
➡️The average Londoner pays 45% of their income on rent in a median 1-bed home
➡️5 boroughs in London cost more than 50%
➡️Women on average pay 15% more of their income on rent than men

What planet does he live on? This is astounding to hear from a senior banker. We are in a cost of renting crisis, that is making it incredibly hard for people to buy a home as we hand a third of our wages every month over to our landlord.
The government is promising £5000 vouchers to insulate homes, but no word on how this will work for rented homes.
Private renters are more likely than owner occupiers to live in a home with an energy efficiency rating of F or G. How are we going to benefit from this
@beisgovuk
?
WATCH:
@BenTwomeyUK
explain to Sir Demond Swayne why renters can't simply move elsewhere to find cheaper housing and how the rise in the cost of renting is forcing thousands of young people away from their friends and family.
If letting agents are taking a deposit before you've even seen a flat, that is dodgy as hell, and, if it's as much as £1000, probably illegal (1 week's rent is the cap). You're likely to get it back if you apply to the first tier tribunal
“Put on another jumper” 🤦♀️
If you’re home is cold enough that you need two jumpers it could have serious health implications.
Landlords are required to provide a safe home and a home colder than 16c could be dangerous.
#knowyourrights
Every landlord should be taking this approach during the pandemic - but we know many are not.
That's why we need the government to step in urgently and make sure renters can stay in their homes.
RENTERS (REFORM) BILL UPDATE 🚨
The Government has just voted down an amendment to abolish s21 evictions as soon as the King signs it into law. After nearly five years of promises and record homelessness, renters need to see more urgency.
This map shows the scale of second home ownership across the UK and where it is most prevalent. Read our new blog to find out how this has impacted renters and what needs to be done to ensure local communities don't continue to suffer.
#YourHolidayOurHome
Being a private renter is terrible for your mental health. You have very little control over your housing situation. At any moment you could receive a section 21 notice giving you two months to move out, with the landlord needing no reason.
Mould is a serious problem in the private rented sector. It makes renters ill, causes damage to our property and greatly reduces our quality of life. 11% of PRS homes contain mould and this thread shows a horrific example of it.
A quarter of renters think they won't be able to pay rent in the next 3 months.
That's why we need:
🏡Housing benefit to cover rents
🔒 No coronavirus evictions - and a permanent ban on evictions for arrears built up during the pandemic
❄️A freeze on rents
Well now. Apparently Natwest - you know, that bank we own - is prohibiting its buy-to-let customers from letting to people receiving housing benefit. It even told one landlord to evict her tenant or pay £2500 to remortgage.

Mass eviction process starts in Kent as buy-to-let tycoon Fergus Wilson begins 700 home sell off. He says: “They are not doing very well at finding somewhere to go. If their household income is under £30k, you can bet your boots they won’t get a property.”
