On tube yesterday a group of teenage boys-“ I got a detention from Ms xxx for saying I support Palestine. She would not let us discuss it”. They went on to talk about free speech.. very respectful. Schools must facilitate discussion on difficult topics. If not us, who will do it?

CEOs & HTs - can we just stop with the Mocksteads and constant whole school Reviews? They are causing just as much anxiety and distress as the real thing! There are better ways of quality assurance. Stop with the constant monitoring & checking! Trust your staff to do their job!

I was told I would never be a Headteacher because I was too emotional. I was a Head for 17 years & never tried to hide my emotions. Schools are emotional al places & pupils & staff & parents need to be able to feel & express their emotions!

We need to start by looking & the curriculum & the obsession of filling children with facts. We need to look at pedagogy & the emphasis on testing with no opportunity to explore! We need to look at pastoral care & developing strong relationships. The system discourages enjoyment!

Branwen's full report says multiple ways needed to boost school attendance. But, the logic behind the sport idea is probs that for many (not all) sport is fun and good for well-being. So I think boosting extra curric sport is a great idea.

@booradleysplace Fear not-I was told I was too emotional to be a senior leader & it spurred me on to apply & get out to the post of Deputy (6 years) & then on to headship (17 years). Emotions are what make you who you are & help u to respond to other in a positive way! No cold fish needed!

@HarryBrighouse1 Tim got on a coach from Oxford at 5 am to come to see me & my staff in East London because my PA contacted him after a disastrous Ofsted inspection & were v down! It was a complete surprise & lifted us all. He wrote to all he met (many). We still treasure those letters & memories

The few staff left there are very unhappy & if ever anyone needs a good union they do! Probably too late now as most have gone!

Not true - we were confiscating weapons (including knives) &acting accordingly in terms of exclusions, police involvement etc as early as 2002! Every Child Matters agenda (Labour) allowed us to work in real partnership with police, youth service, social care etc. All before Gove

Before Gove, could not search kids’ bags for knives, could not give immediate detentions, heads could not permanently exclude as kid likely reinstated, so kid would bring knife to school, can’t search, would use it, then can’t exclude for it. Tip of the iceberg. Lots more.

Yes but not new. Every Child Matters included extended schools. My school was opened from 8am until 10pm every day & holidays & we delivered youth services. Real joined up working BUT it was well funded! Very successful but dismantled by @michaelgove

Spellman has learned nothing since her Ofqual days when she could not accept the wrongs that were done to GCSE students! I remember meeting her as part of a NAHT delegation & she was equally dismissive of our concerns! Arrogant & dismissive & unwilling to take responsibility.

So many children don’t need to be in special schools. Their needs can be met in mainstream setting when we have the right funding. Children are part of their community & segregation is (in my view) not appropriate. The focus on exam results & league tables that has put us back!

@SchoolsWeek @educationgovuk I wonder what he thinks schools have been doing ‘flexibly’ last term? Staff have covered each other, SLT have acted as LSAs supporting the most vulnerable children, teachers have gone without PPA, Heads have taken in cleaning & caretaking duties.. I could go on!

@SwailesRuth Ruth describes (v well) the situation in most schools at the moment. It’s not sustainable. Heads must start saying No to things that don’t make school life better for kids & staff! It’s about building relationships - the rest will follow!

@kruevans It’s called modelling! A better idea is to organise Teacher Rounds where all teachers (in the group) observe each other & feed back in a very supportive & useful way! If the group includes SLT they must participate as equals - it works really well!

@jwalms93 You should do what they are doing further down the school as well! I am always blown away by what goes on in EYFS - we (secondary) teachers have so much to learn about pedagogy used in the primary classroom!

@WhistleblowingT Not really the right attitude! Teaching Assistants (u are lucky to have one) may have a lot of experience & specific training around autism & other SEND needs & you would be wise to listen & show respect. Teachers & TAs need to work in partnership. It’s about pupils not your ego!

Tim Brighouse always put people first.Every person he met on one of his numerous visits to school (big numbers) received a personal letter of thanks to them (like the one below). He listened & he cared about us. He respected teachers & was our greatest advocate. A life well lived

Treat teachers as professionals and give them a real voice in the way the school is run. Do things with teachers rather than to teachers! Remember there is no one way to teach - let them decide what works for them & their pupils.

@blondebonce Those who lead small schools are more vulnerable & many of the calls we receive @Headrest_UK are from headteachers of small schools who don’t even have a deputy or AH, many teaching or covering absences & little support from Govs, LA or MAT. Call us @Headrest_UK Don’t be alone.
