Every U.S. Navy surface ship has a copy of Bowditch’s “The American Practical Navigator,” which the quartermaster turns to if the GPS is down. But today I saw a heavily-used copy of “Janes Fighting Ships” (£1,797) on the USS Bainbridge — to identify enemy and allied ships alike.

Japan has many problems but child health care is not one of them. Today, my daughter had a swollen appendix and received a blood test, X-ray, ultra sound, IV and checked by three different doctors -- all at night, after hours. Cost was zero.

Is it just me, but is Chicago super nice to visitors? When my international card didn’t work at the subway entrance, the station worker used her card to let me in. On the bus, when I didn’t have the exact change, the driver said “just pay a dollar. Welcome to Chicago”
