Me to MSword: when I first met you, our relationship was "save every two minutes or perish. So..."

Shout out to The Great Migration. Midnight Train to Georgia tells the story of a migrant who, like many, decided to go back to the South after finding life was not what they expected when they left.

As DC’s cherry blossoms were coming into in full bloom a few weeks ago, so was my baby girl. My journey to motherhood was long and winding but also exciting and blessed. I look forward writing about it at length later.

As a person who is both Black and woman, I felt like something was missing from the conversation about the Black women on the Vice Presidential shortlist...

Me, editing my own writing: This paragraph is great. It just doesn't belong in this document anymore. And, because I am certain I will need it again some day (read: I am a word-hoarder), it's going to live in a different document called "scraps" maybe to be seen again next year.

Getting fully funded for a PhD is also a thing. Don't let the idea of cost keep you from applying. Some programs give you a stipend that you can use to pay for your housing, food, and other expenses. You might not be ballin' but, depending on the school, you may not be struggling
My book,
The Great Migration and the Democratic Party: Black Voters and the Realignment of American Politics in the 20th Century, is now available for pre-order!
I'm happy to spend the next few weeks with

So... one can get arrested for being out after curfew but not for being accessory to murder?
Arrested for standing in the wrong location while you report the news, but not for failing to prevent your coworker from killing in cold blood.

The Great Migration and the Democratic Party: Black Voters and the Realignment of American Politics in the 20th Century
My uncle--Robert Grant, Jr.-- died of COVID-19 very early this morning. I mention this

to add to the chorus of people trying to drive home the idea that actual people (humans just like you, as you're reading this) are dying over dumb shit.
Am I the only professor of political science who has ever been dropped from an umbrella insurance for "political writing?" If not, who do y'all use?
@GEICO
and
@Travelers
are planning to drop me because I wrote a book about The Great Migration and the Democratic Party.
All these Black women representing states we don’t traditionally think of as Black in the delegate roll call got me in here with my eyes sweating 🥹

The SSRC is proud to announce the recipients of the An American Dilemma for the 21st Century grants:

,
@rjemigh
,
@rajivatbarnard
, &
@WVillalongo
. The grants support studies of the ongoing impact of Gunnar Myrdal’s "An American Dilemma."
Some of our ideas about folks like us "going to get their PhDs" include going later in life/going while working/ going while managing a family. That's a noble route, but you may be able to take a different path-- you could go straight through.
"Harris’ father’s people got dropped off in Jamaica. Mine got dropped off in Haiti. The African diaspora is huge, and it is worldwide, so to suggest that a Jamaican is not African, or connected to Africa, is not acknowledging the vestiges of slavery."

In good news, I saved a large number of historical newspaper articles about the Black elected officials in Chicago, NYC, & Detroit from 1915-1965. Organized by name & location of elected official... If this is of interest to a young scholar out there, I'm happy to dropbox it all.

just graduated a person who took a 20 year hiatus. Come on through, we’re ready for you.
When grading, do you ever feel like someone put "the answer" to the final exam question in the class GroupMe (because you've now read 43 answers that are all bad in the same way).
Finally, this is a friendly reminder of your greatness. If you read about those opportunities, thought about applying, & didn't bc you questioned your greatness, I am explicitly asking you to APPLY ANYWAY! We can't affirm your greatness if you don't first introduce yourself!
I just poured by soul into a letter of recommendation. Be the kind of student who makes a professor happy to spend their time writing for you as if their own happiness depends on your success.

I'm quoted here, along with the brilliant

Imagine having the idea to storm the US Capitol and not being worried, at all, that the police would shoot you dead where you stand for having the nerve to roll up on the seat of government like you own the place.

students shouldn't have to stage a sit-in to get their administration and Board of Trustees to respond to the racist acts occurring on campus. Respond to the students, hire the outside monitor, and work to maintain a community where racism isn't tolerated

Hello students I love and other ones too. The internet is permanent.
Internet threats may be considered a crime called assault. Following through on such threats is a crime called battery.
I have been writing a syllabus in my head for about 3 weeks. Finally typing it out today…
The class is called “Problems in American Democracy,” we are going to focus on recent decisions in Colorado and Maine to bar Trump from state party ballots.
Me in January:
I want my students to build writing skills and be able to sustain an argument over five or ten pages, so they are ready for grad school!
Me in late March:
Who wrote this syllabus, and why didn’t they make the whole class multiple choice tests?! 🙄😅🤣
I went through a few docs until I found Dr. Shawn Davis-Wilensky, who was as interested as I was in understanding me and my fibroids. She wanted to collect data about my fibroids over time. Clearly, the nerd in me was like “Yeesss, Sis! Let’s do some science!”
I wanted to layer in some historical context (about dogs as weapons against Black bodies) to the argument about Howard University's Yard as a safe and sacred space:
I didn't get a fellowship for which I was a finalist 2x. A kind person in the org already told me why I may not get it, so I don't feel bad. I mention it
