Having a modal instead of redirecting the user keeps the user within the “browsing” context. From a UX perspective, it’s less mental overload to close a modal vs going back to the previous page.

So the next time someone tells you they have your IP address from a tweet of yours...call their bluff. If they do, it is because they lured you out of twitter using an external link, got you onto a different website from which they were able to retrieve your IP address.
