I generally don’t share my videos on Twitter, but this is my favorite I’ve made so far- about the word “ham” in Persian. Ham means same or equal, but the Persian language has such a unique way of combining it with other simple words to come up with the most poetic concepts:

The word for “shade” in Persian is “sāyé” (سایه). The word “hamsāyé” (هم‌سایه) means “one who shares your shade.” 🏡🌳 And that is how we say “neighbor” in Persian.

“Damet garm” is a Persian expression used to mean “well done, good job, right on, f*** yeah!!” Literally, however, it means “may your breath be warm”- warm breath means you’re alive, so “may you be alive!!”

Persian is creative! The word for vacuum cleaner is “jaroobarghee,” a combo of two words- ‘jaroo’ -broom and ‘barghee’ - electric. So put it together, literally, a vacuum cleaner is an electric broom 😂

In Persian, “istan” means “a place abounding in”. So Afghanistan, “a place abounding in” Afghans. Tajikistan, “a place abounding in” Tajiks, and so forth. There’s also “beemaristan” (بیمارستان). “beemar” (بیمار) means a person who is sick. So a beemaristan is… a hospital!

The word for “great grandchild” in Persian is “nateejé” (نتیجه), which means the outcome, result or conclusion. So many a puns can be made- “so you’ve FINALLY reached a conclusion!” (belakharé bé nateejé reseedeen!) which is what I used to tell my grandmother all the time.

One VERY common way to say “no” in Persian is “na baba” which literally translates to “no daddy”. But we don’t say it only when we’re talking to our fathers. It’s just an emphatic way of saying “no way!” Here’s an example- “is khoresh karafs better than ghormeh sabzi?” “NA BABA”

Economic sanctions didn’t make it so that Khatami promised so many things, and accomplished so little. Economic sanctions didn’t make it so that Ahmadinejad was illegitimately elected and rolled back any minuscule “progress” Khatami did make.

You know how they say Eskimos have over 200 words for snow? That's been debunked, but the point still stands- Iranians have a LOT of words for family. Case in point- 1 English word aunt = khālé (maternal aunt), amé (paternal aunt). 1 English word uncle = dāyee (mat. uncle), 1/3
