Welp, here we go again LA. It’s been only seven months since last year’s Getty fire. Hot, dry and windy all day and into tonight. Fire season takes no breaks, not even for a pandemic or civil uprising

This was a hard day for Los Angeles. Add the Grammys, coronavirus, etc, and it made for a busy Sunday of news too. Throughout it all, the @latimes team showed its remarkable might to tell this story responsibly and powerfully. Grab a paper tomorrow, special section inside. #Kobe

I’ll be the first to admit I was not a stellar college student. But connections and a diploma from USC very likely opened the doors that put me on a path to excel here at the LA Times. How much local Latino talent are we missing by ignoring our Cal State campuses? #SomosLAT

An early look at tomorrow’s @latimes A1 and special section cover after a historic #Oscars night and a huge team effort (seriously, that special section is a monster)

Good news! 100 more copies of the Chicano Moratorium: 50 Years Later zine are available at the LA Times store after the first run sold out in less than a day — plus some gorgeous posters. You can also download a free PDF to print and bind at home!

This tweet comes at midnight because during the #LATGuild blitz this morning, I was just waking up. That’s because I’ve worked nights/weekends every week since I started 3 years ago, sacrificing a lot of time with friends and loved ones. That’s how committed I am to the LA Times

Police have neither the responsibility nor the authority to define who is and isn’t a journalist.

LAPD just told a group of about a dozen reporters documenting arrests if they dont have a press pass visible they might as well join the rest of people being arrested (rather than stand on the sidewalk.) @LATACO

All of San Diego jokes about “Klantee” and East County, but it’s more than that. Mt. Carmel High was probably much more diverse than it was in the 90s by the time I got there, but the casual and “ironic” racism/anti-Semitism @brooklynmarie writes about was very real and pervasive

Since everyone is hearing about the Santee Klan hood shopper guy I'm going to go ahead and dust off this op-ed I wrote for the @washingtonpost last year about how San Diego has always quietly been a hotbed of white supremacist activity

Soon-Shiong: “For a person of color, the structural and interpersonal violence that is the legacy of colonialism, slavery and policies designed to disenfranchise human beings based on their race or ethnicity is unmistakable. It is part of everyday life.”

Last day in San Antonio, I couldn’t leave without some breakfast tacos and a margarita. (Also, four tacos was ambitious 😬)

Every good Southern Californian knows October is prime beachgoing season. One of those heat waves hits, tourist crowds are gone, and it’s just you, a book and an almost empty beach

A student journalist I met last week at the NAHJ/EIJ convention sent me a follow-up email addressed to “Mr. Servantez,” so please excuse me while I stock up on dad jeans and apply for an AARP membership
