Headed out on Dad leave for a few months, which means largely consciously uncoupling from reporting and this cesspool website for a bit. Will pop back in here and there for book stuff (standby for news!) and a last story or two awaiting publication, Otherwise, until September...
I'm sure this will shock no one, but the usual Proud Boys /QAnon telegram channels are reacting like their team just won the Super Bowl right now. Already seeing comments about this setting a "precedent for rioters" and how they will be dealt with in the future.
NEW: For years, more than a dozen Torrance cops exchanged racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic texts and images. Today, I can identify most of the officers and reveal some of their hateful conversations. My latest:
Quick Thread -- Megan Thee Stallion was only on the stand for about 45 minutes this morning, but she walked through the entire shooting in that time. She entered court around 11:15 a.m. to shouts of support in the hallway. Tory Lanez did not look at her when she entered.
THREAD: I found the rest of the racist texts allegedly exchanged by more than a dozen Torrance police officers from 2018 to 2020:
They joked about killing Black children and suspects.
They used slurs to refer the family of a Black man they shot to death.
BREAKING: Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault of all counts related to Jane Doe 1. The jury acquitted him of sexual battery against Jane Doe 3. Hung on all counts related to Jane Doe 2 and Jen Newsom.
Most of the Kelsey Harris tape has been played. Cliff Notes Thread:
— She says Tory Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion
— Says Tory “physically assaulted” her after by pulling and dragging on her hair.
— Says there was a convo with Lanez about money, but never explicit bribe offer.
@theashleyray
Hey Ashley -- I cover cops for the L.A. Times, and the department's been flat denying claims like this for two days. Any chance you or your friends can screenshot one of these tickets? I'd just like to see what they look like and try to figure out what's going on here. - JQ
I've typed and deleted five different tweets about the body-worn video of an LAPD officer killing a 14-year-old girl now. What the hell do you even say? This is an absolute nightmare.
Finally a story that can be served by my immense nerdery - the LAPD is investigating the theft of the Iron Man suit from the Avengers movies. No, I am not making this up. Yes, this is kind of the plot of Spiderman: Homecoming.
The attacks on
@meghanncuniff
from Lanez and his supporters stay absurd, largely launched by people who don't understand a thing about courts or journalism.
There's no bias. We both cover hundreds of cases a year. Literally don't have time to have an opinion about defendants.
This is insane. And people will literally disregard her reporting and continue to believe bloggers because they’re using his account is try to discredit her.
Students now being led out by deputies with rifles at Saugus, some obviously in tears and shaken up. One kid asks out loud “What kind of a world is this?”
This shouldn’t need to be explained but:
You’re allowed to be absolutely disgusted by the attack on
@LASDHQ
deputies AND highly critical of their treatment of
@josie_huang
covering that shooting outside the hospital.
These things are not mutually exclusive.
BREAKING: P-22 was "compassionately euthanized" this morning, according to the California Dept. of Fish & Wildlife's director, due to the serious injuries the mountain lion suffered earlier this week.
I hope you'll read the whole piece. It's long, and uncomfortable, but it's important. If you need a refresher, this all started coming to light because someone allegedly spray painted a swastika in January 2020.
Here's the big'un -- Cash bail is effectively dead in L.A. County “My office will no longer request cash bail for any misdemeanor, non serious, non violent felony offenses."
Asked why she didn't report shooting to LAPD during the vehicle stop: "At this time we are at the height of police brutality... I felt if I said this man had shot me, they might shoot first and ask questions later. I don't feel safe in the car. I don't feel safe with the police."
Dying laughing some in my replies think I got a bias in Tory Lanez trial:
1) I cover trials/courts all the time. This is my 24/7 job. Don't have time to cheer for home & away teams.
2) At least one person with a media badge leaves court every day with Lanez people. Focus on that.
BREAKING: Judge upholds assault charges against Torey Lanez for 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion at preliminary hearing in downtown L.A. Story coming soon
@latimes
Harvey Weinstein will sleep in the custody of the state of NY tonight. Judge Burke ordered him remanded until his March 11 sentencing, where he faces a max of 25 years in prison.
Two of the officers I've identified as under investigation shot and killed Christopher DeAndre Mitchell, a Black suspect whose death sparked protests in 2018. D.A. Gascon has hired a special prosecutor to reconsider charging those officers:
There's probably 15-20 mins left to play in the afternoon session. Also of note, Kelsey seems to paint the argument in the car between Lanez and Megan as much more about their careers than about who slept with who, which has come up a lot at trial.
But the main point is -- the tape is Kelsey being very clear and direct on what she saw that night and who shot who, as opposed to her litany of "I don't remembers" on the stand this week. I'm gonna have a longer piece on her testimony
@latimes
tomorow.
By the end of the day, the prosecutor had clearly had enough though:
Kelsey: “It’s hard to remember these events.”
Kathy Ta: “It wasn’t so hard in September.”
Quick thread on openings: Prosecution's case is pretty straight forward: Megan Thee Stallion will say Torey Lanez shot her. Kelsey Harris will say Lanez is shooter. Lanez apology voicemails and texts are tantamount to a confession, DDA Alexander Bott says.
Megan was emotional as soon as she took the stand, describing Lanez as someone she "used to" be friends with before telling a prosecutor she didn't "feel good ... I can't believe I have to come up here and do this."
Maybe the most significant development this morning at Tory Lanez trial came after Kelsey Harris left the stand: The prosecution is seeking permission to play her entire recorded interview from September 2022.

The officers’ comments spared almost no one: They joked about “gassing” Jewish people, assaulting members of the LGBTQ community, using violence against suspects and lying during an investigation into a police shooting, according to D.A.'s records I reviewed.
Today’s moment of cringe at that Harvey Weinstein trial:
Defense attorney Alan Jackson took off his jacket and said “I’m not gonna go any further, don’t get scared” to an accuser who had just described the way Weinstein stripped naked before allegedly assaulting her.

Full story here. I'll be back to you all on breaks, thanks for following along: Megan Thee Stallion takes the stand in Torey Lanez trial with support from demonstrators
In total, the officers I've identified (which also include one Long Beach cop) have used serious or deadly force at least seven times since 2013 against Black or Latino men ... the same groups they often made hateful comments about in the texts.
As to perjury issue: Harris does not have immunity from a perjury charge but important to note, she said she couldn't remember a lot of things on stand, not that they didn't happen. There's a galaxy between those points when it comes to what could legally be considered perjury.
The scandal is also a threat to a hundreds of prosecutions. City and county prosecutors have already had to drop 85 cases where the officers either made an arrest or may have been witnesses. Records show these officers are listed as potential witnesses in 1,400 cases.
MTS confirms that while the argument started about their romantic situation, it quickly escalted to a fight about their careers. Lanez apparently told MTS she "ain't shit" and MTS responded by insulting his stature in industry. She said that really set him off.
For clarity: Harris interview tape previously could not be used as evidence. Judge allowed full tape in as evidence of prior inconsistent statements and after prosecution raised issue that defense had "opened the door" to tape by implying prosecutors pressued Harris in interview
At what point does the judge in this Alex Jones trial throw up her hands and find that he's violated so many legal norms that the Sandy Hook parents, under some obscure penal code, get the right to beat his ass in court for a whole day? And why isn't that moment now?
Officers called Black men “savages” and several variations of the N-word, also sharing instructions on how to tie a noose and a picture of a stuffed animal being lynched inside Torrance’s police headquarters, according to records I reviewed.
MTS also hits on a topic that's been central to the case between the Daystar record and Drake's recent lyrics that implied she lied about the shooting -- that she feared reporting Lanez could hurt her career:
Each doctor is crying and it's brutal.
“P-22 had a number of severe injuries and chronic health problems, his prognosis was deemed poor, based on all these factors and a unanimous recommendation by the medical team at the San Diego Zoo’s safari park" euthanization was approved.
MTS says the argument in the SUV started because she wanted to leave the party at Kylie Jenner's house and Lanez didn't. He "had an attitude" and when they got in the car he told MTS "you need to stop lying to your friend" referring to Kelsey Harris.
I first revealed some of the texts and ID'd most of the officers involved last year.
Since then, officers have fought in court to suppress the evidence.
That actually led to a court filing that made a redacted report on all 390 texts a public record.
Gascon announces creation of use-of-force review board to consider re-opening of fatal force cases that Jackie Lacey declined to prosecute. They will review cases going back to 2012. Gascon has already promised to re-open four shootings from LAPD, Long Beach, Gardena & Torrance
Eventually he lets her out of the car and MTS decribes the shooting as it has been in court and interviews before: Lanez yells "dance, bitch!" and fires 5 times, she says. "I'm in shock. I'm scared. I hear the gun going off. I can't believe he's shooting at me."
I talked to two students at Saugus who heard 7 gunshots and joined a legion of students fleeing the main entrance. One said they intislly thought a balloon had popped but then as more shots erupted knew “something was wrong ... this was really happening.”
In the past year, at least 113 criminal cases where the officers would have been material witnesses have been thrown out because of the scandal. Lawsuits against the officers have cost Torrance at least $10 million, and more civil complaints are coming.

We’re done for the day at Tory Lanez trial. I don’t have much of an update as it was an endless cycle of Kelsey Harris saying she didn’t remember something and the prosecutor then reading transcripts of her saying exactly that in a September interview. Never even made it to cross
"Some of [Tory Lanez] fans blame her for his conviction, “but only the really, really dumb ones,” Cuniff says.

BREAKING: Democratic donor Ed Buck will also face federal charges related to allegations that he supplied drugs to men who died at his West Hollywood home, source tells me. More coming
@LANow
On the tape, Kelsey also vented her frustrations that Megan didn't "protect" her in her initial press statements and left her thrown to the wolves re: rumors that she was the person who shot Megan.
MTS says she wanted to get out of the car right then and there but "I'm in the peak of being famous and I'm in a thong ... and I look all crazy" was obviously worreid abotu being photographed.
Only 3 of the roughly 17 officers we know are involved have lost their jobs. One of those cops doesn't even work in Torrance.
Under California law, the statute of limitations to punish the officers expires this month.
Torrance Police ignored most of my questions for this story.
BREAKING: D.A.'s office is now filing hate crime/robbery charges against two of the three men initially arrested in an attack on a group of transgender women in Hollywood last month.

Of course and I understand. I'm just saying it's rare we get across the board denials like this from Media Relations, asst chiefs, the unnamed sources types, etc. If you can, maybe at least ask what municipal/vehicle/penal code is cited on ticket? I just want to run this down.
NEW: Source tells me Drakeo The Ruler was “badly hurt” in attack at Once Upon a Time music festival in L.A., where police are responding to a stabbing.
Victim/Witness Services will now be available to families of those killed in fatal police force cases. Requirement for people to testify in cases to receive victim assistance also now quashed, Gascon says.
Trying to organize my thoughts here: First and foremost thanks to all the journalists, friends, sources and others who made noise tonight to get me out.

On afternoon break at Tory Lanez trial: Kelsey Harris’ testimony has been a lot of I don’t recalls and at least one more (failed) attempt to plead the 5th. She’s saying she doesn’t remember things she said to prosecutors during a September interview, which was recorded.
Kelsey Harris testimony at Tory Lanez trial began with her showing up with an attorney and asking for immunity. It was granted even after the DA swore they had no intent to prosecute her.
One more thing. Kelsey was granted “use immunity,” meaning the DA’s office can’t use her testimony in this case to prosecute her for a crime. It does not mean they are declining to prosecute her for any criminal conduct they become aware of.
Sentencing enhancments? Poof. Gone. Not just gang enhancements as we've previously reported but gun crime enhancements, three strikes allegations, etc.

Under Gascon, the office will seek to re-evaluate and possibly resentence defendants convicted under enhancements or three strike allegations. Estimates this could impact thousands of cases.

shortly and I'll link it here at the end of the thread. MTS is back on the stand at 130pm, and presumably we will get to cross-examinations this afternoon.
Other than the legitimate danger of fire-related incidents at encampments (which is real and I’ve written about) this is a master class in bad framing and worse balance. Not a single homeless person or advocate interviewed? And the McMansion hed is just gross.
^Defense attorney George Mgdesyan has repeatedly argued no one else will testify Lanez (or anyone) yelled the phrase "dance, bitch!" ... phrasing the prosecution has used repeatedly and DDA Alexander Bott began his opening argument with.
P-22 "went to sleep" at 9 a.m. The decision to euthanize wasn't finalized until this morning but had begun trending that way Thursday night, officials said. A memorial service will take place after Christmas.

Kelsey Harris done on the stand. Prosecutors presented texts (again) that she sent immediately after shooting reading “Tory shot Meg” and later describing Tory physically assaulting her, but Harris keeps saying she either sent texts in a panic or doesn’t remember sending them.
NEW: Harvey Weinstein will (finally) be extradited to Los Angeles after a New York judge knocked down a petition from his defense team. Prosecutors said its unlikely the L.A. D.A.'s office will try to claim custody of Weinstein until mid-July.
