Amazing Day. Last yr I tried to find unkown relatives who left tributes on WW1 grave of my great uncle. Today we met for 1st time. Family reunited a century on.
It’s with a heavy heart that we have had to suspend
@BBCNews
operations in Russia until we assess impact of new laws which outlaw independent journalism. Thoughts with colleagues in Moscow whose voices cannot be silenced for long.
I’m thrilled to have appointed
@ChrisMasonBBC
to be the next Political Editor of
@BBCNews
, taking over from
@bbclaurak
next month. Top man for a massive job.
As the Queen’s coffin proceeds across Scotland live on air, it’s a good moment to say thanks to the hundreds of technical colleagues, engineers and producers whose names are rarely spoken but without whom the world would not see these astonishing scenes.
We are not pulling out
@BBCNews
journalists from Moscow, as some articles are suggesting. We cannot use their reporting for the time being but they remain valued members of our teams and we hope to get them back on our output as soon as possible.
We at
@BBCNews
unreservedly condemn decision by Russian Government to expel our Correspondent
@sarahrainsford
from Moscow at end of month. Excellent and knowledgeable journalist, always fair.
Deeply worrying reports from Sydney of major police raid on newsroom at
@abcnews
- Australia’s leading broadcaster. Warrant appears to give sweeping powers to seize anything - completely contrary to free media. Support to
@gavmorris
and his reporting team.
This week
@BBCNews
has reported on
#coronavirus
from across the UK, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, India, China, S Korea, Pakistan, the US, Japan, Australia, S Africa, Austria.... our teams on the front line. Thank you to every one of them.
Today is deadline for
@sarahrainsford
to leave Russia - expelled for purely political reasons. Sarah was one of best informed & most considered foreign corrs in Moscow. Her expulsion is bad news for everyone who values fair reporting.
@BBCNews
continues to condemn decision.
Delighted to take up new role as Deputy Director of
@BBCNews
in addition to heading our News Content (Newsgathering) department. Privilege to work with great colleagues in these v challenging times.
Jonathan Munro will become BBC News Global Director from September. Heading up international services, he will be Director of
@bbcworldservice
, oversee
@bbcmonitoring
and remain Deputy CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs
The death of Emily Morgan deprives us all of an intelligent, probing, empathetic journalist. An explainer and an analyst. A real talent. Hardly comparable, though, to the loss for her family which must be utterly heartbreaking.
We are devastated at the passing of our remarkable colleague Emily Morgan.
Emily was a hugely talented journalist and a much-loved friend and mentor to so many here. She will be greatly missed.
Our thoughts are with Emily’s family.
Statement:
Exclusive: BBC staff have been banned from attending LGBT pride events and told they could be suspended if they breach the new rules. David Jordan, the head of editorial policy and standards, took the decision on Wednesday.

@BBCOne
will carry live coverage of today’s meeting between senior MPs and
@BorisJohnson
followed by daily Downing St briefing.
@reetacbbc
on air from 1545.
Today we have announced the appointment of
@AleemMaqbool
- currently based in Washington - as Religion Editor for
@BBCNews
. Aleem is a hugely thoughtful reporter and analyst - the ideal skills for this important role.
It’s a big night for colleagues at
@BBCNewsnight
tonight. After six months sharing our main news studio, the team is moving to its new permanent studio - Covid-secure and very smart. Good luck to all.
All of us
@BBCNews
are v concerned about arrest of colleagues in
#Myanmar
. We call for immediate unconditional release. We will continue to report events there.
There’s never been a more appropriate time for the appointment of
@BBCSteveR
as the first
@BBCNews
Russia Editor. An expert in his field, and a passionate advocate of impartial reporting and analysis from Moscow and beyond.
About to flick the switch on the biggest upgrade of
@BBCNews
bulletins on
@BBCOne
in ten years. New tech, new look, familiar faces and traditional location reporting from the world over

@thehuwedwards
It’s 25 years this weekend since death of John Schofield. We were
@ITN
trainees together. He died covering Croatia war for
@BBCNews
- terrific man and excellent reporter.
@JSchofieldTrust
now helps young journos across UK. Proud to have been a part of that.
#RememberingJohn
We are making some minor changes to our
@BBCNews
programmes tmrw to help us stay on air throughout the
#coronavirus
crisis. Same public service journalism but some changes to presenters and formats. Stay with us......
This revealing doc on
@BBCTwo
#brexitstorm
shows to everyone what we colleagues of
@bbclaurak
already know - that she is indefatigable, scrupulously fair, funny and incisive. Congrats to
@BreakwellNeil
& production team.
Further update: some
@BBCNews
journalists in Russia will be reporting again from tonight, impartially and accurately. A temporary suspension was necessary to asses new legal restrictions, and keep our staff safe. Analysis from Moscow key to coverage of global events.
This doc on
@BBCOne
about male fertility is astonishingly brave.
#MeMyBrotherandOurBalls
- most open account ever of a private and painful crisis for countless men.
This morning I was sorry to announce the departure from
@BBCNews
of
@DannyShawBBC
- for many, the voice of our home affairs coverage over countless huge stories. Good luck, Danny, with whatever you take on next.
Sad to hear of the death this week of former
@BBCNews
Sports Correspondent Kevin Gearey - a master of the witty script line. His reporting was accessible to the passionate fan and the casual viewer. Best wishes to his family incl
@paddygearey
who followed his dad into sports news
Today
@BBCNews
begins coverage from inside Iran with Correspondent
@martinpatience
. Rare access at key time. Some restrictions on team’s movements but not on what they are saying. From 1pm on
@BBCRadio4
and later on
@BBCOne
The Downing St presser expected soon - live on
@BBCOne
until 1910.
#Strictly
will be on air on time followed by live rugby. If presser still going it’ll be live on
@BBCNews
Channel, also avail on
@BBCiPlayer
Hey - stop being so angry. Programmes need directors, producers, technical support. Like any organisation we have staff off right now. There’s no conspiracy. We will do fewer programmes so we can sustain the
@BBCNews
service.
Your family name Edge or Townson? Lost someone on Somme? Did u leave fresh flowers on Harry’s grave? We’re relatives too. Visited him last week and saw you’d been. Who are you and can we meet in memory of Private WH Edge?
Labour’s apology over the anti Semitism investigation by
@BBCPanorama
vindicates excellent journalism and distances current Lab leadership from their predecessors.
Working in a war zone is never risk free, however skilled and careful a journalist is. But the world knows more and sees more because of the courage of colleagues like Arman Soldin. A tragic loss.
We are devastated to learn of the death of AFP video journalist Arman Soldin in eastern Ukraine today.
All of our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.
Labour’s Andy McDonald says
@BBCNews
consciously played its part in Corbyn defeat. Various Conservatives say
@BBCNews
is left leaning and irrelevant. Take your pick.
Huge congratulations to
@ChrisMasonBBC
- excellent choice as new chair of
@BBCAnyQuestions
Big shoes to fill - just the guy to fill them. But fear not, he’ll still be one of our most formidable Political Correspondents and do

@NomiaIqbal
right to point out on
@BBCNews
live coverage that the really historic news is
@KamalaHarris
becoming first woman, and first person of colour, to be VP. Most senior woman politician in US history.
Farewell to
@highamnews
- aka Nick Higham - first ever Media Correspondent for
@BBCNews
who retires tonight after nearly three decades on our screens and our radios. Good luck and thanks from all your colleagues.
As well as remembering his journalism, it’s worth noting that
#PeterSissons
sat on Independent Hillsborough panel which paved way for new inquests. He was a Liverpool boy who did his bit to get to truth.
#JusticeForThe96
#JF96
Friend and colleague
@NickBryantNY
announces he’s leaving
@BBCNews
for new life in Australia. A huge loss to reporting from the US, he goes with best wishes of all who care about beautifully written, pithy analysis of events which matter.
I have loved my 25 years with the BBC. To work alongside so many colleagues I admire and adore has been one of the great gifts of my life. But I’ll be leaving later in the year - returning to Australia, happy, contented and genuinely excited about what’s next.
Heading to India today where
@BBCNews
will restructure this week to align with Indian policy on foreign media ownership. Big moment in eighty year history of
@BBCNews
and its 85 million consumers across the country.
@BillNeelyReport
@itvnews
@SkyNews
@BBCNews
@Channel4News
And to add, Bill, that for every reporter we see on air, there’s a producer, camera operator, engineer, driver etc. It’s a team game and they all deserve respect - as you appreciate better than anyone.
British journalism is poorer after the demise of
@BuzzFeedUK
. Some terrific reporters sticking their nose in where it wasn’t welcome, and enriching our trade. Good luck to
@alexwickham
@josephmdurso
@PatrickStrud
and many many more. You always wrote compelling stories.
Very sorry that
@WillGompertzBBC
is stepping down as Arts Editor. He’s been transformational on arts coverage across
@BBCNews
. He’s off to a big job at The Barbican and we wish him well.
Powerful
@BBCNews
reporting from Afghanistan today by
@SecKermani
in Taliban territory and
@yogital
in Kabul. Expert correspondents putting situation there in proper context.
Whatever did or didn’t happen, for officials in a plural democracy to demand that journalists delete footage of an event they have witnessed is a threat to all of us.
#JournalismIsNotACrime
I got bundled into a hut by a security guard, told to remove accreditation, and then forced to delete video footage of the crowd issues otherwise I wouldn't be allowed back in
I’m duty bound to stay impartial on all matters. But there has to be the odd exception.

@BBCNews
reporters are returning to their roots to assess 2020 from their own communities.
@BowenBBC
hails from Merthyr. His journey back there is revealing and surprising. Watch here:
Remarkable interview just now by
@bbcpaddy
on
#BBCBH
with
@zebsoanes
on having a stroke aged 44. Good tips about how to recognise it, and great to hear him back on the air.
To those who say
@BBCNews
is “scaremongering” about
#Covid
by reporting from a big NHS hosp, and claim we don’t report effects of lockdown, we continue to do economy, jobs, care homes, mental health, child welfare etc etc. It’s nonsense to say we’re not doing all these & more
Delighted that
@dngbbc
- Damian Grammaticas - is joining our team of Political Correspondents. Damian has lived and breathed the Brexit process in Brussels, and has huge experience in China, India. Interesting perspectives to add to our
@BBCNews
team at Westmin.
First indications show that over 14 million people watched Downing St news conference announcing lockdown in England on
@BBCOne
. And nearly 11 million enjoyed
#Strictly

Quick bit of maths shows that over 16m watched
@BorisJohnson
TV address live last night - 9.1m
@BBCOne
, 3.4m
@ITV
, 2.5
@Channel4News
- plus those watching rolling channels. Radio doesn’t have daily ratings system unfortunately.
@BillNeelyNBC
But she wasn’t named until 7am UK time. Once she was, we led with it. What do u want us to do? Guess that victim is a journo? Your comparison with Jill Dando is off the scale silly versus unnamed victim.
