I’ve paid some crazy green fees in my time, but £31 for Dunstanburgh Castle is absolutely mind boggling. Spectacular scenery combined with a genuinely intriguing test of golf. Absolutely terrific day.

Goswick is every bit as good as advertised, with exquisitely contoured green sites featuring ramps, backboards, chutes and humps. The bunkers are well placed and the routing offers consistent peaks and plateaus – literally and figuratively. A cracking golf course.

Unbelievable style, yet so much substance. Castle Stuart is the most photogenic course I’ve ever played. Fantastic green sites, brilliant routing and bunker shaping from the heavens. A work of golf art.

Scotland is littered with great 9-holers, but there don’t seem to be very many top class ones south of the border. Alnmouth Village is the real deal, though. The Hill Hole is brilliantly nuts. And standing on the 7th tee stirs the soul. Especially in the twilight hours of Autumn

Morfontaine provides one of very best golf days imaginable. The big course has a fluid routing laced with subtlety, strategy and variety. The smaller course is packed with wild greens and fabulous short holes. The clubhouse is understated and beautiful. An experience to savour.

White Dogwood (11th/2nd) at Augusta National. The creek left of the green was turned into a pond in 1951. A new tee was built in 1952, changing the 11th from a dogleg, to a longer, straighter par 4.
