All clear to be a vaccine volunteer. Yesterday my job was to sanitise pens & clipboards, help people fill in forms, escort people to get their jabs and radio call to get more people sent up. It was v busy, but you felt you were part of something bigger.

I was in Vauxhall today for a meeting and shocked to see the new developments. £1 million apartments in 30- storey blocks, but pollution and no trees, cafes, shops or community amenities. @createstreets is so right to campaign for 'gentle density' rather than this brutalism.

I've discussed street homelessness in focus groups and I doubt even if there are votes in this. British Legion estimates 3-6% street homeless are military veterans who have made sacrifices for this country - and the public know this.

Ahead of my Home Affairs Committee evidence, it is worth noting that in 2019, 64% of asylum decisions were grants of protection. Iranians = 74%, Eritreans = 90%, Sudanese = 89%, Afghans = 69%, Syrians = 92%. Most asylum applications are genuine.

The international student scandal has similarities - 30,000 students were accused of cheating in outsourced English language tests & had their visas removed, 22,000 were left in limbo. The Home Office didn't ask questions about test security or the competence of the provider.

Re #ULEZ , I'm sure there are things to be learned from the 1968-76 town gas to natural gas conversion. Dirty and dangerous locally produced coal gas was replaced by North Sea gas, which involved engineers visiting 14 million homes to change the burners.

An issue I will be looking at in my new job is older people & work. There are now 3.6 million people aged 50-64 who are classed as 'economically inactive' ie not working and not signed on to look work. There numbers have increased since COVID.

I would assume that LGBT+ candidates are less likely to have young children. There is a need for debate about how difficult it us to enter politics if you have caring responsibilities. That's why so many councillors are ageing men.

🔴 Labour NEC member Abdi Duale told Labour LGBT+ event last week that nearly quarter of Lab's new candidates are LGBT+. I reckon if Labour wins a majority there could be 100 or more LGBT+ MPs overall - maybe a lot more if Lab gets big majority. It's currently about 65, or 10%.

I remember how terrified I was in the swine flu epidemic of 2009. I was in the middle of chemotherapy for bowel cancer and my immunity was v low. My sympathy and thoughts are with cancer patients, pregnant mums etc etc

@sundersays I live with a geneticist who says that this new evidence highlights how similar all human beings are to each other. Almost all alleles ('flavours' of a gene) found across all regions of the world. Most disparities between groups down to environment not genes.

I oppose many of the policies/ideas aired at this conference, especially on migration. Shutting it down is a mistake, and gives more publicity to these ideas, IMO. The actions of the Belgian authorities will be used by the likes of Braverman & Goodwin for their own advantage.

I was a child, but can remember TV adverts & posters. My grandma complained, but she went to a public meeting organised by the gas board. The messaging was that the new gas was cleaner, safer & faster. So lots of public engagement then & effective messages, in contrast to today

20,389 Ukrainians came to UK on temporary work visas in 2021, and 614 came as adult students. While they have had their visas extended, neither group (according to latest HO statement) has right to bring family to UK. They too must be allowed family reunion
