Having been tasked with overseeing Optimism Governance's RFG (Requests for Grants) program, I've been thinking abt things Optimism builders need
The thread will the be the first publication outlining a core thesis we're building around—lowering project launch costs
yeah I’m obviously thrilled that velo and aero are getting the recognition we’ve worked so hard to earn
but what’s on my mind is how ppl showing up now have no idea about what we’ve all been through
will they ever learn the deepest lore in defi
I've been elected to Optimism's first grant council. I'll be part of a three-person panel offering builder grants
appreciate your delegation and support
builders: reach out if you're working on something or want some ideas
I want things that make OP stand out
Optimism wants to be the best place to build, and I'm part of a panel issuing grants to make this happen. We'll be putting out formal requests soon.
In the meantime, below I detail things I'd personally like to see built. I encourage others to add to this thread as well.
Aero and Velo allocated something like 90% of supply to the community
Completely bootstrapped, no VC unlocks, no team unlocks, no nothing
None of these shenanigans you're reading about today
Just doing the job—growing the onchain economy
This is precisely how Velodrome and Aerodrome's incentives work
Our team have permanently locked our veVELO and veAERO allocations and farm, just like anyone opting into the system
No unlocks, no privilege, no misalignment, aggressive decentralization – just as defi should be
Took well over half a year to get RFGs on Optimism from idea to reality—proud to have taken part
Because of this, OP's going to be the first layer to subsidize audits, RPCs, frontends, and other infra
Congrats and thank you to everyone getting a grant
This is precisely how Velodrome and Aerodrome's incentives work
Our team have permanently locked our veVELO and veAERO allocations and farm, just like anyone opting into the system
No unlocks, no privilege, no misalignment, aggressive decentralization – just as defi should be
I'm running again for the Optimism Grant Council, this time targeting the top three slots, which would have me evaluating Superchain grant proposals
For those with OP votes: I have the context and vision needed to do the job well at this critical point
1/ Velodrome could become a major place in crypto to launch a project token. People are noticing how the flywheel bootstraps liquidity, but there's another reason there's immense potential here:
With Velodrome you can build a project treasury without selling any tokens
shld be a daily reminder that Aerodrome is in the conversation to the tune of *more than Solana*
if your favorite influencer has somehow not joined the conversation
they're probably not in the conversation
Just realized
@SynapseProtocol
is up for RPGF
My last report documented Synapse getting 1mm OP in 2022 for bounties and building liquidity on Optimism. Instead of doing this, in March they sent 850k to Cumberland to deposit on Binance
I think we should know what happened here
two years since i grew from being a marginal degen to whatever i am now, part of a team i'll forever be proud of
impossible to sum up the sheer insanity of vedao, velodrome, and aerodrome in those two years, all the existential challenges and doubts fought, the volume of lore
Here's another obvious one lacking RPGF ballots for quorum
yAcademy - it's a Yearn team project that trains new auditors. Graduates have been responsible for audits of 2 of the top 10 OP protocols by TVL
cmon this one's a layup
Velodrome Slipstream is live. 🚴♀️💨✨
Slipstream is our take on Concentrated Liquidity, using a novel, fully audited implementation based off of UniV3.
A small amount of emissions will start flowing to Slipstream gauges at midnight UTC.
👇
team stays hungry, team keeps shipping til the job is done
we’re not following the typical pattern w token unlocks etc bc our intention is to win, not extract and ditch
everything else tends to fall in line for the long term
It is amazing to watch Aerodrome grow.
One thing that makes it exciting is the fact that there are no vesting tokens waiting to unlock, for team or VCs.
There were no pre-sales or liquid token allocations, there will be no "exits".
All incentives are aligned for the long term.
what everyone thought on day 1 was a humble fork has in fact been setting new standards on several fronts. on the engineering side, we're now sharing some things we've learned
we're writing playbooks others have been following w success; next, we upend expectations of a dex
Velodrome v2 is fast approaching so we're launching a dev focused newsletter for those who want to go deep.

mindblowing to me that
@UniDexFinance
hasn't gotten on
#RPGF3
ballots. their products are actively used public goods
yknow, actual stuff that's been built and serving lots of ppl
badgeholders look at this and ask yourselves how you've snoozed on them
idk how many more ways to say we've shown founders a way to do this correctly
velo team eschewed the easy route and instead played to win
permalocked its allocation and pays the bills by farming alongside any other user
we have nothing to dump—we don't eat unless everyone does
Unpopular opinion: it’s the founders that choose the cheap scam route 🙇🏻♂️
I know this is edgy and not popular, but for once, don’t blame the incentives to know the outcome. The incentives come in different shape: short-term and long-term. It’s a founder’s choice to choose which
was genuinely surprised by how much we've already raised through this. lots of credit due to the ppl who set it up
we are moving really fast. i think ppl need to be prepared for a new optimism
1/ A reminder to those interested in Builders and RFG grants for Season 4,
@syndicateio
has rolled out co-granting alongside the OP community.
Co-granting creates a new experience that enables anyone to show support for OP builders by co-granting alongside the OP Foundation.
i respect the sentiment but this is an astonishingly bad take
claims of impact *do* have to be clearly backed in an application—wasn't here
and it would take me essays to describe the many ways badgeholders were generally *lacking* context, not in possession of asymmetric info
I went to zuzalu. It exported a lot of good culture and learnings beyond the 500 people who were there. All of the research & education about public goods, longevity, cryptography, ZK, synthetic biology etc… those are all public goods that exported from zuzalu.
I’m not saying
BREAKING: Representative Mike Collins has bought up to $50K of a cryptocurrency called Aerodrome.
The coin appears to have a market cap of less than $500M.
This is the first time we have ever seen a politician trade it.
Note that the last time Mike Collins bought an altcoin,
okay, what does this mean
1) Superchain/Base thesis proving out
2) ve3,3 thesis proving out
both theses a few of us have wagered our careers on
take a second and think about what's happening here
Aerodrome is now just $34M in volume away from flipping Uniswap's WETH / USDC volume on mainnet.
And it is doing this with just 15% of the TVL.
This is absolutely nuts. 🛫
this one feels especially good to roll out because it's something we've had a clear plan for since day one
coming soon are a few other groundbreaking things we've similarly wanted to build for a long time
the next few months are gonna be fun

Optimism subsidizes smart contract audits and RPC expenses
We work with
@sherlockdefi
@SpearbitDAO
@trailofbits
as partner auditors and
@LlamaNodes
If you're considering getting on Superchain and need help covering audits/RPC, reach out to me or these orgs
These protocols are doing this with their hands tied behind their backs
this is without aggregators even being linked, MMs/arb bots being plugged in, automated liquidity managers being added
and it’s happening FAST
always underestimated, never beatenTM
Velodrome and Aerodrome are over halfway to flipping UniV3 on
@Optimism
and
@Base
.
They are generating more revenue than every other DEX in DeFi combined and some.
They have more TVL than every other DEX on OP and Base and some.
There has been a paradigm shift.
BREAKING: Representative Mike Collins just disclosed a purchase of a cryptocurrency called Velodrome.
The coin appears to have a market cap of less than $100M.
This is the first time we have ever seen a politician trade it.
What shouldn't get lost in RPGF talk is that OP has the best grants program anywhere
Governance reinvents itself every quarter, reaching new levels of professionalism and impact with Grant Council, getting copy-pasted by other ecos
We can do this w RPGF too—but we have to now
I've applied for a position on Optimism's Grant Council, focusing on builder grants. If you're an OP delegate, please consider voting to bring a uniquely informed perspective to the Council.
Velodrome began as the central liquidity hub of
@Optimism
Mainnet, today we begin our evolution into the liquidity hub of the Superchain.
Velodrome will be expanding first to
@modenetwork
. 🟡 🚴♀️💨
Read all about our very first Superchain partnership below.
ppl wringing their hands over macro this and that
one of the biggest big-picture stories—maybe *the* biggest affecting defi specifically—summarized elegantly here, a yield crisis
it's no longer an obvious thing to keep your stables onchain—big headwind for DeFi
This is astonishing - Rising interest rate in USD environment VS yield dropping in crypto environment due to the bear market (token prices down, TVL dropping) leading to a reverse in relative yields of US 1 year treasury bill VS Curve 3pool yield
(data source: FRED & Curve)
already over gabagool. thought he was a friend, was shocking how quickly any residual sympathy has sloughed off
got no energy to deal w the fallout when you're busy trying to do all the stuff he wrote all those essays about doing
he probably made more grifting off those essays
To my knowledge, this is the first example of an ecosystem grants program committing to offering smart contract audits
which is arguably some of the most if not *the* most impactful support a grants program can offer – hence the large allocation to this RFG
The Council is excited to announce that Request for Grant (RFG) 3 is live.
The Council is focused on improving the market for code audits in the Optimism ecosystem.
RFG 3 is an experiment. The Council will continue to create audit-oriented RFGs to find what is effective.
just like velo is a perfect testbed for defi literacy, it is (surprisingly, tbh) an outstanding litmus test of ppl’s basic business sense
if you don’t see how well positioned velo and aero are, study
if you claim to have business insight and you don’t see it, I have questions
if you squint real hard you can see last cycle’s giants
this isn’t shade—it’s more noting that we’re building on these older standards to make something genuinely different
our goal is for this to be something that lasts
oh, and aerodrome is doing this with no incentives
Wrote a long, still incomplete(!) post about a grant issued a year ago but still only halfway through its OP as its project team seeks to demonstrate impact for RPGF.
Readers, draw your own conclusions.
not to get too cassandra but are ppl gonna vet mission requests or work to get something done with RPGF changes *not* next quarter but now?
there's a week to vet 50-odd requests, more millions of OP on the table, and few are looking
past a point we deserve the outcomes we get
Idt they'll be a passive partner, either—the beauty of our model is that when you get involved there's huge benefit you can deliver to other projects (eg those in your portfolio)
Huge respect for Base and CV for envisioning the rising tide here - we expect others will follow
The Base Ecosystem Fund, led by
@cbventures
, was launched to invest in the next generation of onchain projects building on
@base
.
We're excited to announce that the Base Ecosystem Fund has market acquired a $AERO position. Together we'll build the future of
@base
.
Yesterday, Velodrome did more volume than GMX.
It is the largest protocol on Optimism, hosting more TVL than Uniswap, Curve, Beethoven X, and Kyberswap combined.
Indeed, it is now 10th largest DEX in all of DeFi.
The "Velodrome Model" is upending the DEX landscape.
👇
so when are people going to see what Velodrome is becoming
wrote the playbook for getting any new project liquidity and attention by being pound for pound the best incentive + bizdev one-two
but now...
This week I was reelected to Optimism's Grant Council. This season we have 5mm OP budgeted to grant to projects that will help Optimism win and move crypto forward
Reach out if you've got an idea—I'll help you put something together and find collaborators
Hope everyone's clear that velo team have strong opinions about retro funding because we believe in it and in the Optimistic Vision
We wouldn't have shown up day 1 and refused to go elsewhere—despite mind-bending incentives to do so from other ecos—if we weren't principles-first
almost every day there's something new out of OP
these programs are getting bigger and better—if you're reading this there's probably already something you can get paid for
if you're feeling burnt on crypto or unsure of what to do this summer, consider this a spiritual lifeline
100 million of genuine value not ‘earned’ but DISTRIBUTED to veAERO voters
This is all fees generated from trades and incentives made to attract external capital
Aerodrome is providing a service that people want
to the tune of 100 million
$100 Million in Rewards Achieved ✈️
In less than a year since launch, Aerodrome has accumulated over $100 million in Total Rewards (trading fees and voting incentives), all of which have gone to veAERO voters.
History made, congrats pilots. 👨✈️🍾
velodrome and aerodrome are kind of under a perpetual fair launch
every new chain starts from zero and brings blue sky opportunity
every new epoch potentially flips the table on where the action is
and whatever team gets they’re locking anyway, so no team/vc overhang
I hope we've all learned something from RPGF3 and plan to spend some time digging into the mission requests at
There are a lot (I made 11), and there's predictably a big distribution in quality. How bout we spend the next two weeks making all of them good
on alpha groups and their makeup:
almost everyone has an internal hierarchy of alpha groups / chats they’re in
they will freely take information from lower-priority groups to higher-priority ones, and they usually have a
#1
this isn’t always a problem but it’s good to note
i think what's happening now on farcaster is genuinely the first time I've ever seen decentralized building work at parity with the sharpest teams
people need to be paying attention to this - it feels like escape velocity
At
@coinbase
we call these Protocol Specialists. They're the most crypto native people at any company and can do almost anything; building products, closing deals, advising on strategy, writing comms, and publicly representing the company.
started publishing reviews of OP governance proposals as part of a shadow defi committee with some friends from synthetix and beethoven x—and
@TWlTTERGM
these proposals need more work but it's worth the effort to get them to another level—big $ at stake
Thrilled to be an inaugural reviewer for Superchain grants—and big gratitude to and respect for
@brichis_
for passing me the role despite winning more votes
And thanks for all the public support—this is something I work hard on and it's a great surprise it's being noticed
this piece is *precisely* what drew
@VelodromeFi
, a protocol entirely bootstrapped without VCs (though with OP grants!), to build on
@optimismPBC
part of our mandate going forward is to support this ecosystem funding with incentives & grants of our own—already earmarked in docs
The best part about
@optimismPBC
's future governance is the amount of projects and useful stuff that will be built as a result of its funding
there're dozens of things that need building right now but aren't being built cuz the only way to source funds is through mercenary VCs
Request for Grant (RFG) 5 is live!
The Council believes that Optimism benefits from a strong RPC network.
RFG 5 is designed to subsidize RPC node providers who provide services to Optimism grant recipients.

#1
DEX on
@base
by every single metric. 🛫
A testement to the power of the MetaDEX model, which combines the power of UniV2, UniV3, Curve, Convex, and Votium into a single layer.
kind of impressive that now that defi's actually making real steps to bring in real world yields (after two years of talking abt them), we don't need them anymore because everyone's max levered again
on that note, i am once again asking you to bring your stables over to Base
was really validating to get an RPGF grant for my project tracking how projects use their OP grants—i'm blown away. much appreciation to everyone who voted and for
@optimismFND
for taking a shot at RPGF
hope ppl use this example to try out stuff that could help the OP community
Huge news: the results of RetroPGF 2 are in! 🌞🌱
This experiment in retroactive public goods funding is driving growth of the Optimism ecosystem by allocating resources to the projects and people that have demonstrated positive impact.
this is a necessary step toward making application loads manageable and setting objective measures of impact—grant amounts are going to make a *lot* more sense now. couldn't be happier with this
builders, take note - optimism continues to be miles ahead
Today we're introducing a new era of clarity for Retro Funding!
The Collective has allocated a total of 850M OP to incentivize impactful work across the
@Optimism
Collective and the Superchain.
Doing eco grants doesn't have to be complicated
you fund in advance the stuff you want to work
you pay retro for what does work
otherwise you blow up the point of retro funding—even under budget constraints, which is *obviously* not the case with Optimism
All the fatalistic RPGF takes remind me of the fatalistic governance grant takes that existed before Optimism built the best grants system out there
Sure there’s work to do but I wouldn’t fade this program
ya i talk abt work a lot but hear me out
imo our case offers better models:
• how you build and earn as a team (alongside users)
• how you define a protocol's success (make, don't take)
• how you define stakeholders (expansively)
i'm proud of how we're pushing org logic
lol at being mentioned along w these chads I just happened to be awake to share what we all knew
there are ~25 of us active in one of 26 partner protocols on one of many ecos to deploy
decentralization is a meme til it isn’t —now’s not the time for cynicism if u believe in defi
shld be a daily reminder that Aerodrome is in the conversation to the tune of *more than Solana*
if your favorite influencer has somehow not joined the conversation
they're probably not in the conversation
an always fun moment with VCs looking to get into the system – they'll ask for coins to OTC
we say the same thing every time – we don't have any to give, and we never will
8/ tl;dr: use velodrome's flywheel to essentially fair launch to veVELO voters and build capacity without token sales. an entirely new funding model.
and it could come as a standardized product that's easy to use
what if this is velodrome's launchpad?
we are in that period where everyone thinks base was just a short term szn and smart wallets flopped
whats going to happen is you will start to see consumer apps (like
@blackbird_xyz
) with smart wallets gain traction while CB turns up the marketing
base will be the consumer app
By the way, I'm running once again for Grant Council and will be voting on a number of other initiatives. If you like the work I've been doing, delegate your OP to me at (jackanorak.eth). Takes just a minute to do.
I think it's time to revisit OP Badgeholdership
We have more chains and more folks with needed perspective
Most original holders were chosen because they were trusted during this experiment's launch, and then they chose other holders
We have a bigger pool now - let's use it
Great to be working with
@RossShuel
and
@a16zcrypto
as a delegate
I was struck by how much this team walk the walk and know their stuff—they're committed to their delegates' independence and believe in the work we're doing
Optimism are lucky to have them on our side
@JonasSFT
supporting what you want to see more of is for proactive funding, not retro funding
the point of retro is to reward what has worked, not what you want to work
know who your ecosystem is looking out for and what it's trying to accomplish
is it just looking to enrich the capital funding it, or is it reaching for something more expansive?
Today, we’re incredibly excited to announce Retroactive Public Goods Funding Round 2.
In February 2023, 10M OP will be distributed to the people and projects powering the public goods that make Optimism possible.
eventually we're going to need to compile a history of the insane lengths velo team have gone to to get things done
alex would have probably driven to their houses if that's what it was going to take
@jack_anorak
@VelodromeFi
@AerodromeFi
Also if you are getting road blocked by support, use public data sources to track down the contact information of each member of the executive team until you find someone with a phone number connected to an AppleID, then FaceTime them until they answer and get the domain locked.
see, this is the kind of flow we're talking about when we say
@AerodromeFi
is central to the ecosystem
our goal is for everyone in the economy to have a share of this action
A dangerous thing I keep seeing is layer ecos leaning on liquidity mining grants to kickstart activity
hey, it pumped Avalanche, they reason
No. 3AC plowing everyone else's money into Avalanche pumped Avalanche. Most other ecos attempting liq mining eventually fell off a cliff
this is the thing that's been getting me revved up today
it's a fantastic way to think about the point of RPGF
and yet i see so much convenient misunderstanding
it's IMPACT, not EFFORT
you can slice 'impact' many different ways but you should be expected to do some accounting
Announcing RetroPGF Round 3! 🌱✨
This fall, 30M OP will be distributed to builders, creators, and educators who have provided positive impact to the Optimism Collective.
grant vetting flow
>see something weird in grant
>write about weird thing in grant
>be accused of XYZ by angry grantee
>exhaustively refute bogus counterclaims
>find new weird stuff bc there's always more
>but nobody reads anything now bc everyone mad
>get new replyguy now
