📣 Personal news: Very honoured to become the Director of the IE Center for Innovation in Global Politics and Economics & professor of Geopolitics of Europe
@iespega
@IEuniversity
.
The core aim is to contribute to
#policymaking
and innovation through applied research. 1/
We are so delighted to share that Ilke Toygür (
@IlkeToygur
) has been named the new director of
@IEUniversity
’s Center for Innovation in Global Politics and Economics!
Whatever happens, the Turkish opposition should be praised for putting up the good fight against all the odds. No free media, no free judiciary; state resources are being used in favour of the incumbent; electoral laws are being changed acc. to needs. Not an easy task. Anywhere.
I am very much aware of the internal dynamics that lead to this proposal but this is so unfair to
#Turkey
and
#Kosovo
. Visa free travel has been so desired for long by them.
Commission proposes visa-free travel to the EU for Qatar and Kuwait nationals
📣📣 Personal news: I have been granted
@CATS_Network
Fellowship at
@SWPBerlin
@SWP_Europe
. Starting from today I will be working on
#EU
's &
#Turkey
's foreign and security policy and the impact of FP on TR-EU relations. Stay tuned for more on the project!
I am very proud of them not because they are Turkish, but because they are children of immigrants that overcame many difficulties to become who they are today. Thank you!
All eyes are on Russia. This crisis thought us once again the importance of well-functioning relations with neighbours. I have an innovative proposal for the EU's relationship with
#Turkey
. Here it is explained shortly in a
@Carnegie_Europe
publication. 🧵
Bu haber haksizlik olmus. Faruk Kaymakci’yi bilen bilir, iyisiyle kotusuyle on yillardir Turkiye-Avrupa Birligi iliskilerine emek vermis, ileriye goturmeye calismis bir diplomattir. Hem ingilizce hem de fransizca konusur.
The problem is EU’s interests are not necessary fully compatible with solidarity with Greece and Cyprus. Being a side and an honest intermediary at the same conflict makes it very difficult for the EU. This is different than Belarus or Ukraine.
On the Eastern Mediterranean and Turkey, we are clear and determined in defending EU’s interests and solidarity with Greece and Cyprus. We want to find paths towards a healthier relationship. It is in the mutual interest of both the EU and Turkey
For having a fair election, you need to have free media and no control over state resources (aka you cannot campaign for a mayorship using Presidency budget)
#justsaying
Turkish ruling elite managed to put Turkey's name next to Russia's as a challenge to the EU/the US/transatlantic relations/NATO etc with its unilateral foreign policy. This is discussed in every conference/meeting i participate on foreign policy. This is an image hard to shake.
Very happy to join
@maxbergmann
's ever-growing
@csiserep
team as a non-resident Senior Associate. I can't think of a better time for working on transatlantic relations and building bridges between Brussels (Madrid) and Washington DC. Very much looking forward to!
Today in Madrid, Spanish President
@sanchezcastejon
launched the flagship project for the upcoming Spanish presidency - Open Strategic Autonomy. It will be a European project with the participation of 25 MSs (except Ireland and Hungary).
On the left: Turkish "woman in red" - an iconic representation of Turkish resistance from 2013 Gezi Protests.
On the right: Georgian "woman with the EU flag" - her resistance against the foreign agent law in 2023 is just so powerful.

European Parliament elections are the second largest democratic exercise (after India) in the world. Many still claim that European Parliament's role is obsolete. I wouldn't call more than 400M citizens being called to ballot boxes unimportant.
#EP2019
No doubt, it has been one of the roughest periods of my life.

According to

Don’t miss it ⤵
Article 5 of NATO does not cover the attacks that happen outside of member state’s territory. It is limited geographically, does not apply to Turkey’s case right now.
I am sorry but explain it all you want, blame the EU protocols (which is also to be blamed) but if you leave
#IstanbulConvention
and then don't give chair to a woman president just weeks later, you cannot win this in the eyes of European public(s).
It is not only the

Love the hashtag:

It truly is unacceptable, i wish Charles Michel gave away his seat or seated on the sofa (while distancing himself) with Ursula von der Leyen.
Before Erdogan-Biden, comes Erdogan-Macron meeting. I think both leaders wanted to visualize "we are working on our differences and looking for ways to cooperate under the umbrella of NATO".

There you go, a family photo that might boost Turkish President's image at home - and if they are lucky - the investments as well? Oh wait, the investors still care about stability and rule of law, or at least should they? 🤔
In Ankara, ready with
@vonderleyen
to start discussion with
@RTErdogan
on the future of EU-Turkey relations.
Sustained de-escalation is needed to build a more constructive agenda.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hollowed out state institutions, placed loyalists in key positions, and enriched his cronies—paving the way for this tragedy.

Bright new day in Brussels—time to respond to
@Mij_Europe
's arguments. First of all, this debate exists, so wishing it go away won't resolve the issue for the Turkish opposition. Countering arguments in Brussels and the EU capitals is more than necessary. 1/
A lot of pushback to my earlier tweet on the trajectory of 🇪🇺🇹🇷 relations if the opposition
@kilicdarogluk
wins on 14/28 May. But the assumption that an opposition win would result in a substantial reboot & jump forward in relations is naive - & not how many on EU side see it 1/

Turkish presidential and parliamentary elections are just around the corner (14th of May). They will be very consequential not only for the country itself, but also for its Western allies. Our recent work & policy recommendations could shed some light 👇 1/
Well, now the results are official. Erdoğan won the race. His coalition with nationalist MHP got the majority in the Parliament. The post of the Prime Minister is abolished and we are starting the era of super-presidency. Good luck Turkey.

There are millions of votes that are not reflected in the final results, mostly from regions that are led by the opposition. YSK announced that only 71% of votes are counted. Important to wait for the final results before concluding tonight. Still, a second round is most likely.
I am glad that we have submitted our paper on Turkish Foreign Policy and its impact on the EU before the "new" foreign policy doctrine "circle without problems (?)" became viral in pro-government media.
Spain is one step closer to its first coalition government ever (national level). PSOE and Unidas Podemos just signed a pre-agreement for forming a progressive government.
