New ‘Baju Koko’ shirts! They are considered as ‘Muslim menswear,’ and I heard that they originate from Chinese-Muslim men in Indonesia who wore such shirts. They were admired, earning the nickname ‘gēge’ [哥哥; brother], from which the term ‘koko’ is said to be derived.

Great talks so far, including a thought provoking plenary by @alison_phipps . My own plenary talk is tomorrow #BAAL2023York after Glenn Stockwell’s Lecture. Online members can also tune in

It was my great pleasure to present on my Leverhulme Trust study at Lingnan University today. It would have been nice if, in the shot, my neck tie were as neatly aligned as the ideas I unfolded during the talk! A surprisingly engaging audience at @LuGraduate @QUBSSESW

A pleasure to share work about the @SinoMuslimLit project today, and meet MCI folk and researchers. Also loaned some project art to Manchester Museum. More pics to come. For now, a big thank you to @UoMChina @naomi_baciu for excellent organisation and hosting.

1- An interesting artefact of historical literacy that I saw in Cyprus last year. Ottoman’s kept meticulous records & this recently printed volume alone details a mere 15 years of Ottoman rulings (fatawa) applied within Cyprus. Scans of original scripts are contained in here ..

I’m strangely excited for this week’s #SRHE conference in Birmingham. Feels weird that it’s not in Celtic Manor. Also have multiple doctoral students attending and presenting, as I did when I first got involved with the Society. Any trad/desi restaurant recommendations?

Stuff from last year’s China trip I still have not unpacked properly. I hope to lay it all out and do a thread on all the pieces. Via the @SinoMuslimLit account soon!
