Nine years ago today I finished my first boardgame job. It's FLOWN by. Thanks to all of the publishers, designers, collaborators and gamers I've met along the way :)
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell: A Board Game of English Magic, is coming soon from
@ospreygames
, from designers Marco Maggi and Francesco Nepitello (War of the Ring!!!), with artwork by me :)
Weather Machine board, from rough sketch, to first playtest of design skeleton, to lifework, to final. Launching on Kickstarter today! from
@vitallacerda
and
@EagleGryphon
I find the current discourse around AI art emotionally exhausting, but I’m compelled to say that anything that disregards an artist’s control over how their work is used is anti-artist, and callously destructive. I won’t be entering into any discussion in this regard.
Today I found myself giving boardgame recommendations to a doctor and nurse as they performed my vasectomy. Is there a microbadge or something I can get?
I love when you discover that you love a game you’d previously written off. Trajan didn’t gel with me for two plays, but I gave it another chance this weekend... four games later and it’s all I want to play.
Just learned that Klaus Teuber has died. Settlers of Catan was directly responsible for me discovering boardgames, changing my entire career path, and fumbling my way into the best job I've ever had. He leaves the world a better place than he found it. RIP.
12 years ago, I was doodling incessantly in business meetings just to keep myself sane. Thanks for supporting my boardgames work so I can do this stuff for real now :)
Sometimes, games get cancelled and never make it to market. And sometimes, I spend hours and hours drawing little houses that no one will see. So here, for your consideration, is an unfinished game.
We finished off our Tokyo Game Market by actually playing some games! I was bad at them all, but our venue (
@korokoro_dou
in Akihabara) was lovely. Definitely a recommend for any gamers visiting Tokyo. Thanks for your hospitality!
I am BEYOND excited to have been invited to this year's Winter Tokyo Game Market (Dec 9-10)! This will be my first time in Japan and I've been wanting to go for YEARS. If any of you will be there PLEASE say hi, let's do karaoke :)
Some games I'd love to work on in no particular order:
• The Island of Dr. Moreau
• Watership Down
• A Stefan Feld game
• Ancient Rome
• WW1
• Whaling in the 1800s
• Many 2000AD characters
• Haunted House
• Glory to Rome
Hey, if there are any artists who are newcomers to the industry and will be at Essen, let me know if you want to say hi. I’m happy to answer questions about the industry and give advice etc.
#WomensDay
is a great opportunity to highlight some of the incredible women that we're lucky to have working in boardgame illustration and graphic design. Let them know you love their work and feel free to add any more whose work you enjoy! In no particular order (thread):
I just realised that On Mars, Kanban EV and Rococo Deluxe are all nominated for the Golden Geek for best artwork! Thanks to everyone who nominated! You can vote here: (not necessarily for mine! It's a STRONG category this year :p)
If I had to deal with this sort of shit I would have walked away from this industry/culture/whatever LONG ago. I can't fathom the resilience it must take to weather wave upon wave of assholes. But I'm thankful we have some amazing people who care so much that they stick around.
I’ve gotten trashed by those that feel I didn’t take a tough enough stance re:
@IonGameDesign
. I stand by my decision. Then there are those on the other side who feel I’m attacking Phil Eklund.
Here is the head of
@funagaingames
but he’s far from alone:
It's not done yet... but I think the board for Weather Machine will be my favourite that I've made for
@vitallacerda
's games so far... It includes a lot of influences that I LOVE.
If these don’t win every award for artwork in boardgames, there’s something serious wrong. Every inch is drenched in history, it’s a marvellous achievement. Congratulations
@roxleygames
and all involved.
Very jealous of you all at
#Origins2019
. Keep an eye out for Pipeline, Irish Gauge, Escape Plan, On Mars, Age of Steam, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Black Angel, The Scarlet Pimpernel... and any of my other wayward children you happen across.
Meeples! One of my favourite parts of designing components is working on wooden pieces. This is a cross section from some from my games. How many do you recognise?
If a bunch of boardgames artists were able to come together, Voltron-style, for a live stream to talk about junk and answer questions etc., is that something people would be into?
Final Girl is INCREDIBLE. If you like solo games and horror films, I just had one of the best narrative experiences I’ve ever had with a game. Amazing job
@VanRyderGames
Are you a budding artist or illustrator? Here’s your chance to design poster artwork inspired by Daniel Craig’s Bond films…

Hey, if you're a black graphic designer or illustrator who wants to break into boardgames, and I can help you in any way, please don't hesitate to reach out.
This is the fun part of playtesting where I play badly and create problems that
@vitallacerda
has to fix. Later comes the part when I have to fix all of the problems he's created for me 😬.
Play testing The Weather Machine last night with

Its amazing to see how this game has changed over the past 6 months. Some of the new things have lifted this game right up and made it something amazing and unique.
