One of India’s leading historians, Prof. Romila Thapar, was in school in the 1940s when the national movement was at its peak. She was 16 when India gained Independence from British colonialism. Here’s she is sharing her memories of meeting Gandhiji in Pune
A rare public figure who actually reads a lot of books, questions the existing knowledge and those in power and enjoys good cinema. Meet Prof. Manoj Kumar Jha (
@manojkjhadu
), one of the most amazing politicians of our times.

Congratulations Prof. HC Verma on receiving the Padma Shri! I was lucky enough to attend some of his special Physics lectures for school students in IIT Kanpur.
What a great loss to the world of south Asian studies. Prof. Ranajit Guha was one of the most influential south Asian historians. He known for his groundbreaking work on subaltern studies, which focused on the experiences…
A big win for us! The government reverses Decision to Relocate National Museum Artefacts. We fought to save the National Museum and the artefacts. We initiated a nationwide petition and organised awareness walks at the National Museum, we’ll continue our work to save the museum.
A Prime Minister who actually understood the dynamics of history and was well read. These are just a glimpse of the books that Nehru read. These are on display at the Teen Murti Bhawan.

🧵 When A Documentary by Satyajit Ray was Banned
One of India’s greatest filmmakers, Ray made a documentary in 1971 called ‘Sikkim’, which had to face double censorship by the film’s commissioners and the Indian Government, when Sikkim merged with India in May 1975.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) must be disbanded immediately. Its illogical testing methods and recent NEET and UGC NET scams expose severe inefficiency. The government and NTA are playing with the future of lakhs of students. Who will take responsibility for their careers?

Someday I would love to open a community library in Kanpur, my city. Along with a small cafe for book lovers. We need such spaces in our cities, towns and villages
BeerNiceps must focus on lifestyle related things and should not get into preaching history (or rather myths) through his utter nonsensical podcast where he invites a lot of doubtful ‘experts’ on History.
M. Bhavnani’s The Mill (Mazdoor) released in 1934 is an interesting film to discuss. This marks the sole cinematic creation by Munshi Premchand, wherein he not only penned the script but also made a brief cameo.
Congratulations
@tmkrishna
! Your contribution towards making art accessible, making Carnatic music popular is remarkable. You are among the very few artists who still believe in your principles and stand for with democratic values.
Had the honor of meeting Manoj sir today at his residence. We talked briefly about cinema, history and Eric Hobsbawn. Looking forward to many more conversations and meeting with Professor Sahab.
@manojkjhadu
One of the most interesting Karwaan conversations so far. It was amazing to host, the one and only
@ShashiTharoor
on our platform. ❤️ Looking forward to many more conversations.
Just a clarification: Not anyone can be a historian. It is a specialised field which requires years of training and dealing with different sources, endless and hopeless hours of research in the archives and much more.
Was surprised to see this kind of 'restoration' of Jama Masjid this afternoon. Is it restoration or destruction of a monument. Is that cement being used to restore a monument (?)
Found some really fascinating PhDs at our Department Archives, from the 70s and 80s done under the geniuses like Professors Satish Chandra, Irfan Habib, Iqtidar Alam Khan, and M. Athar Ali.
This volume brings together essays by Prof. Romila Thapar on issues and ideas that have preoccupied her throughout her career. These are subjects that surfaced frequently in discussions over the last six decades as they do even more so at present. Pretty excited for this volume.
Sad to learn about the unfortunate demise of Suresh Jindal, one of the few producers who trusted the parallel filmmakers and produced Rajnigandha, Katha, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Gandhi and many more.
Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists
Prof. Catherine B. Asher (Cathy) was one of the most kindest scholars and human I knew. A legendary scholar. I met her virtually in 2020 (19th June) and since then we were connected on email and I had the privilege of hosting her for two lectures. Cathy was a very humble and kind
Just saw my father in my dream and we were comparing history books that we own in our different libraries. We were discussing books on Deccan history strangely I don’t know why though. Miss you Paa. ❤️

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of teaching a course on ‘Cinema and the City’ at IIM Lucknow as a Guest Faculty. In my class, we delved into the intricate relationship between cinema and the city, exploring how films and their urban settings interact.
Dear Papa, It has been two years since you left us. As each day passes we miss you more and more. Someday, in some other universe, we'll meet again.🙏 I hope I can make you proud. 💙
Done with the research project on Women’s Representation in Indian New Wave films studying some of my favourite films like Nishant, Ankur, Duvidha, Mirch Masala, Sparsh, Katha featuring actors like Shabana Azmi, Deepti Naval, and Smita Patil.
I was introduced to Prof. Ruby Lal’s works during my undergraduate years at Delhi University. Her article on the Mughal Harem, which I read as a 17-year-old history student, broadened my mind and opened up new avenues of inquiry in history.
My Early morning read is
@DalrympleWill
's evergreen book The Last Mughal : The Fall of a Dynasty. Whenever you read it, you get mesmerized! Lots of love and virtual hugs to the author!
We have made a Limited Edition Set of Bookmarks, inspired by Historians. Featuring Prof. Kesavan Veluthat , Prof. Harbans Mukhia , Prof. Kavita Singh , Sohail Hashmi sir, Rana Safvi aapa and Prof. Romila Thapar.
Prof. Vipin Kumar Tripathi is a true icon. An inspiration for many and especially for people of my generation, aka the GenZ. A retired professor of IIT Delhi is now trying to unite the youth to stand up against the growing forces of communalism in the country.
Said the final goodbye to Paa this evening and made a promise to make him feel proud in whatever I do in the field of Heritage and History (he was the one who motivated me to start Karwaan and always appreciated and gave me ideas for that).
Professor Romila Thapar recounting her memory of 15th August 1947, the day when India gained Independence. The aspirations and questions that young Indians had at that time for a nation that they saw being born after years of struggle.
Done and dusted with the last research submission. Screening Nehruvian India: A Comprehensive Study of Hindi Cinema in Postcolonial India, 1950s-1960s. Now, it’s time for the end semester exams.
I lost my amazing Papa too to COVID on 1st May 2021. With that , I too have lost faith unfortunately in the government and it's ability to save lives of its citizen. In solidarity with
@BDUTT
So, a total erasure of historians from the discussion in an institution that had some of the most important scholars on Partition like Professors Sucheta Mahajan, Aditya and Mridula Mukherjee, Nonica Datta and Indivar Kamtekar.
It is beyond pathetic that
#JNU
will be hosting hatemongers on their panel on Partition history.
We need to protest what is clearly going to be an openly communal event.
We are creating a film society and a book club in Kanpur. It is to promote both films and books in our city, which was once known for the writers who belonged from the city. If you are from the city and you wish to join our tribe, reply to this tweet.
I was introduced to Kavita’s work on Museums in India when I had opted for the optional paper on Archives and Museum during my undergrad in Delhi University. Her paper ‘A Public Failure? Museums and Audiences in India’ was probably the first academic paper I read.

For the last three years, I can’t think anything but things related to Karwaan. So, my family decided to surprise me with this beautiful cake that served two purposes: birthday and 20K followers on Karwaan’s Instagram. ❤️
On April 6, 1930, 61-year-old Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi picked up a lump of salt and proclaimed, “With this, I am shaking the foundations of the British Empire.”
And he did.

's moving, terrifying and unforgettable memoir of a teen age spent in Kashmir of 1990s. It makes one think of things that for us (in Delhi and other cities), might sound impossible and unthinkable.
@HarperCollinsIN
Just found out that the most amazing and one of my absolute favourite writers Geetanjali Shree did her PhD in History from our department of History in 1987 on Social and Intellectual Trends in Colonial India: A Study of Premchand. So happy to learn that!

Majority of the academic institutions in India are failing to develop academic rigour in students. Especially in Humanities. It is really painful and as a student, it is frustrating and disappointing.
