I am worried about Rails.
As someone with years of organizational experience, I am willing to help in the work of creating a separate independent foundation to secure its future.
Why most devs don't launch their apps:
By the time you pick your Web App framework, Component Library, CSS library, theme, font, hosting, auth provider, media storage, CI/CD service...
... you are tired, forgot your idea, and have lost all motivation to build your app.

Any surprise that 'rabbinical schools' that don't know how to teach their 'rabbis' how to properly put on tefillin, and how to pronounce Hebrew correctly, also don't know how to teach their 'rabbis' about basic ideas of Jewish peoplehood? 🤮

Last week I was pretty aggressively recruited for a DevRel role while at a conference.
(I am not looking for a new opportunity right now.)
It all stopped as soon as they saw the kippa on my head.
Takeaway lesson:
Don't be like that. Diversity makes your company stronger.
@dhh
A dichotomy of "work" and "the rest of life" is deeply flawed.
An inability to create a space where people can be themselves at a place they spend most of their waking lives is the ultimate power play, you just don't realize it.
When looking for your next job, consider:
people > tech
Prioritize the people you want to work with, because you spend a lot of your life working, so do it with those who you respect & value.
Of course, the tech should be interesting, too, but it always comes down to people.
DevRel and marketing are not oppositional, they are friends and need each other.
Marketing brings a wealth of wisdom to crafting messaging and more. DevRel ensures that the messaging is always honest, never overselling features that don't exist or promising without delivering.
@EmmaBostian
For me, at home my American identity comes off prominently and when I visit the States my years living abroad makes me stand out for not being fully American. Never truly fit in in either place.
Antisemitism is normalized again. There was a brief window when it wasn't, but it's back.
I can tell you about the time not so long ago I was courted pretty actively for a DevRel job until they saw the kippah on my head. Or, the time, being Sabbath observant in a learning

@johnsonr
The times I've brought a child to something work related I've been greeted with rounds of amazement & congrats for being a "super dad". If we want the system to change we have to stop congratulating fathers for being fathers & stop penalizing mothers for being mothers.
Seeing yet again the "real devs don't use {library}" threads.
Let's be clear.
There is nothing wrong with using a library that simplifies a part of the stack that is not your area of expertise or interest.
There's also nothing wrong w/doing so for your interest area, too. 💯
Family and community dialogues this week:

Good morning from another beautiful day in Berlin, where no matter how many times I see this word in German, I still can't help being reminded of its Yiddish meaning. 🤭😅
A technical feature != a product. Sharding. Better merkle tree designs. ZK proofs. Etc. Etc. Etc. These are all technical features, but these are not the products.
A product has to answer a why for a user, not only a how.
Web3 desperately needs more product people.
@elsenorrocket
You do realize you're not sitting in a 19th century salon in Vienna? Israel is not a theoretical topic to ponder, but the home of more than half of the world's Jewish population. The only way this "route" ends is through mass violence. Is that what you're advocating?
How many times do you rehearse a talk before giving it?
I've been speaking professionally for over 15 years, and I still practice over and over again. You're never too experienced to rehearse a talk.
I believe that second career developers bring a tremendous amount to their places of work.
It can be defined with one term: pivot skills.
What is a pivot skill?

I was at a tech meetup this morning and they had a panel of only all white men.
One of the panelists was asked about it & he responded that it's hard to "find diversity."
I responded "bullshit" louder than I realized. He gave me quite a stare.
No regrets.

It's been a while, but we are very much into full conference mode again in devrel land, so it might be a good time to remember that while there are lots of enjoyable moments, it is also hard work.
16 hour days.
Formal presentations.
Booth work.
Always being "on" all the time.
So far this year received a couple CFP acceptances and a couple CFP rejections. There will definitely be more rejections than acceptances.
New tech speakers - don’t be discouraged by a conference rejection. You’ll get that acceptance eventually! 💪
In case you are ever wondering,
#DevRel
is not a job title. It's a discipline.
Now, there's a site for that.
(My morning coffee time was time well spent today.)

The path to benefiting everyone—users and devs—is clearer still outside Web3.
I entered Web3 for its fascinating technical aspects and still find them intriguing. Now, I'm eager to return to a DevRel work, where connecting the work to helping devs build useful products is more
"hey, can I grab a shirt?"
"Oh, you're a sponsor also? Sorry these are only for attendees"
Friends, it's been a while since we've done conferences regularly, but don't be that person that I met today.
Another sponsor is also a human, an engineer, and a potential customer. 💯
Web3 needs more product focus. The first smart contract was deployed nearly 10 years ago. Yet, companies are fixated on TPS and scalability. Without products needing scaling, this is over-engineering.
It's like perfecting a portfolio site but neglecting the content.
PCR test at Cincinnati airport: $200
PCR test at Ben Gurion airport: ₪80
The pricing discrepancies across the globe for what has become a mandated preflight requirement is wild 💸
Okay, friends, this may be controversial, but I'm going to say it anyways...
Being a great developer does not make you a great technical writer.
Technical writing is a different discipline, and thinking you know the latter because you are good at the former is just wrong.
It was quite surreal having the last day of my notice period be the same day major layoffs are announced.
If any of my former New Relic colleagues impacted by the layoffs are looking for work, please share here and hopefully the network can give you a boost.
