We help athletes & teams develop the elite, championship-level mindset that is needed to compete & WIN at the highest levels! - Jason Thompson, The Mental Edge
As part of a team you have to realize that sometimes you’ll be on the bench. When that happens you have 2 options: either sit & wait your turn or be active & engaged in helping your TEAM win. You can encourage or pout & sulk. There’s really only 1 option

"Players: If you want to MAKE plays, then don’t miss practice, workouts, extra shots, meals, film, etc. as Navy Seals say, 'Under pressure you don’t rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training. You fall victim to your preparation not to pressure.'”
@CoachJonBeck
Players, this Summer...
-Do more than required
-Get up early & put in work
-Get up game shots at game speed
-Free throws when tired
-Choose 2-3 moves & rep them like crazy
-Find a teammate to hold you accountable
-Set the standard/example for the rest of your team
@CoachJonBeck
Players: The value of sports is that they BUILD your character; the reality is that they will also REVEAL your character. Nobody’ll remember how many points you scored, but they’ll remember how hard you worked/what kind of teammate u were. How will u b remembered?
@CoachJonBeck
Sports are just something that we do, they are not who we are. Sports help teach us about life, but your value as a person is above & beyond any type of sports performance. As a player, make sure you find your identity in something that can never be taken away.
@CoachJonBeck
"No one should have to push u to work hard. You should want to work hard because u want to be a better player & teammate. U can get better w/ a purposeful workout in 45 minutes, < 5 % of your day. You must create the time. If u can’t, u don’t want it. No excuses!" -
@CoachJonBeck
"Players: Do U have a separator? Something that U do better or work harder at than anyone else? This is key to your overall success. Sometimes it’s just the ability to outwork people. Can U go hard & smart in the gym all by yourself?"
@CoachJonBeck
Players: You have 24 hours in a day. If you can’t find 1 hour to get in a purposeful workout, it’s really simple, you don't want it bad enough! Extra work is on you, no excuses! -

Self-Talk is so important for athletes! This is why The Mental Edge exists. To help athletes like Hannah overcome the mental roadblocks keeping them from reaching their potential and to get back to being a “beast” on the court!
Iowa coach Lisa Bluder talking about sophomore
There is no need for this in athletics, period. Respect your opponent. Play the game and let your play do the talking. Two great players that let their emotions get the best of them. You can’t be in control of your game until you are in control of yourself and your emotions.
Your inner circle should include people you trust, people you respect and people of varying ages, backgrounds and life experiences. It should also include people who:
- Tell you the truth
- Hold you accountable
- Are supportive
- Challenge you
- Want to see you happy

Never, ever compromise yourself and your values to please someone else...

Sometimes being THE GREATEST, is all about being LAST!
Last 2 leave team workouts
Last 2 EVER b disrespectful
Last 2 do the bare minimum
Last 2 leave practice
Last 2 blame others
Last 2 talk bad about coaches
Last 2 put up w/selfish teammates
Last 2 EVER quit

Becoming the best version of yourself starts with getting better today, tomorrow, and the next day. Don't worry about "best" or comparing yourself to others... just focus on "getting better" every day. -

ATHLETES: "Regardless of your role, when you’re on the bench during a game, it’s time to rest your body, but not your mind. Stay engaged & know the situation. Focus on being the best teammate you can be. You never know when your number will be called."

As a leader, do you react or respond to a crisis? The answer is critical to your success. A “reactor” acts on emotion. A “responder” hits pause and intelligently considers the situation. Great leaders are like thermostats - they control the climate. - Coach Bob Shipley
PARENTS: Please understand that removing all obstacles from your child’s life isn’t helping them. In fact, it’s keeping them from being ready to handle the adversity that will come there way in life and in athletics. Let them struggle. Coach them through it but don’t remove it.
Kids have to learn to dig deep, struggle & fight their way out of adversity. You can pay to put them on every kind of competitive team, get them a trainer/equipment/extra practice, but if they can’t claw their way past troubles that WILL come, they’ll never develop as athletes!
"Are you on a team for Service or Status? Are you there for playtime time, popularity and prestige or for learning, competing and serving? Sell out to service vs. status. Status is about what you get, service is about what you can give and who you can become." - Kevin Hall

ATHLETES: What you do/don't do when no one is watching will be exposed when everyone is watching. Winning doesn't happen by accident. It's not a light switch you just flip on & off. You can either pay the price in the off-season or pay the price during the season. It's up to you!

You don't have to be a starter to contribute.
You don't have to be healthy to contribute.
No matter what your current role, bring your passion, positivity, and persistence and you will CONTRIBUTE to your team.
