I just received a letter in the mail from someone who is incarcerated who heard me on NPR Science Friday ( @SciFri ). He wrote 4 pages about the joy he gets from watching mocking birds nest right outside his cell window, and a prayer from the Quran. I am in tears.

I met a Black woman at a car shop In ATL yesterday. She asked about the boots in my trunk, so I told her I’m a biologist. She said she’d seen biologists on tv and was so excited to meet one in real life. She told me she was proud of me and would be looking for me on tv one day.

Be still my heart. Gopher tortoises are a keystone species. They dig massive burrows (over 6 feet deep and up to 40 feet long), which are used by over 350 different species for shelter. This baby tortoise is about 4 months old. #GopherTortoise

I WISH that I had seen anyone like me, or the many scientists of color I've met on twitter, when I was a kid. Do you know how much of a difference that would've made? To this day, every time I see a Black woman scientist on here it's a much needed reminder that this IS for me.

If hearing someone say “Black lives matter” offends you, you are a racist. If you walk on eggshells to protect the emotions of racist loved ones/people you know by NOT holding them accountable for their deadly opinions, you are an MVP of systemic racism.

I JUST FOUND OUT THAT THE LA ZOO @LAZoo , ST. LOUIS ZOO @STLZoo , AND GEORGIA AQUARIUM @GeorgiaAquarium ALL HAVE BLACK DIRECTORS AND I AM BURSTING WITH JOY! Learning this has reinforced my sense of belonging, my hope for equity in conservation, and my excitement about the work!!!!
