I'm going to start with using this one as an example. Things that are mildly sus but excusable are marked in yellow/gold, while unexcusable things are marked in red. Similar to hands in AI generated images, the back paws here are a dead giveaway IMO, alongside crispness issues.

Speaking from experience, thicker brushstrokes are actually where I focus less, while thinner brush strokes are where I'm more focused. There's no excuse for the back paws to look like that to a trained artist. Here's some examples of real art with similar features to this one:

Take a look at that Vaporeon. Like really, compare it to the Eevee. Do you see anything wrong with this picture? If your answer is "oh that Vaporeon is stylistically different" OR "oh that Vaporeon isn't drawn well" you've gotten half the issue. It's both combined...

It also indicates to me that the Eevee in the center was created with or enhanced by AI. Additionally, if the quality of the vaporeon (and the luvdisc, whose inconsistent shading is a huge red flag), the tail is HUGELY messed up and the neck fur is very suspicious. Also...

To be honest with you, that Vaporeon isn't that suspicious for the reasons you think it is, it just looks like someone didn't check their work. The feet are different sizes, the tail is bent weirdly, the head fins are different sizes... but what are those weird white markings?

The hind foot is the most suspicious anatomical issue...besides the fact that the front and center eevee managed to get this into the semifinals. There's nothing wrong with this Vaporeon, but someone who drew this as some of their best work would NOT qualify for semifinals.

Compare to this real piece, and you should see why the falling flowers are so suspicious. You can also see how detail is supposed to decrease the further away you go, but it seems to increase in this photo, only to get all blurred out. All of this combined is too suspicious.

There's a weird green thing in the water, which at best correlates to a reflection of trees but it's too far down in the water for that. Maybe it's meant to be algae-covered tree roots, but why would the artist choose to put that in clear, bright blue water??

To put full explanation for what's wrong with the tail: there are weird, completely impossible spikes, and the tip of the tail seems to be vanishing into the clouds or water above. These aren't decisions an artist would make willy-nilly, and the blurriness tells me this is AI.

I would say the absolute biggest giveaway in this image is the tail. If you see something that blurry AND misshapen, it's AI. Even I'm not that sloppy. I wasn't even as a kid doing lineless painterly work with a COMPUTER MOUSE! (second image)

Because the AI eevee distracts from the low quality Vaporeon, someone without the talent and skills necessary to win a competition like this got selected, and it's insulting to artists. It's not insulting to submit the vaporeon by itself, but it never would've won by itself.

You can see the way certain shapes are drawn - the bush, the trees and landscape outside, the details on Eevee. There's elements where its blurry and abstract, but they're deliberate and clear in what they're meant to represent. It's a lovely piece and far better than AI slop.
