Iowa Central Alumni - Turfgrass Management / Director of Field Ops - Wichita Wind Surge AA Minnesota Twins / ‘22, ‘23 Texas League Groundskeeper of the Year
@ravidravidravid
Alright bud I’m about to leave you and all your pals some knowledge who have probably never stepped foot on a golf course. I work on a golf course as an assistant superintendent and oversee 250 acres of land. Read below benefits to golf courses.
@ravidravidravid
-Provides wildlife habitat
-Protects topsoil from water and wind erosion
-Improves community aesthetics
-Absorbs and filters rain
-Improves air quality
-Captures and cleanses runoff in urban areas
-Discourages pests (e.g. ticks and mosquitoes)
@ravidravidravid
1) Golf Course Roughs And Trees Create Good Wildlife Habitat
More than 70 percent of most golf courses are rough and non-play areas including natural grasses, trees and shrubs. Combined with the open areas of fairways and greens, the golf course is an attractive wildlife habitat
I am very excited to announce that I have accepted the Head Groundskeeper position for the Wichita Wind Surge. I would like to thank the Round Rock Express and RS3 Turf for my time spent with them and the relationships and experiences I’ve gained.
8th opening day in professional baseball. 4th as a Head Groundskeepr. In my 4 seasons here this is the best the field has looked on opening day. Extremely proud of the crew for all the hard work to get us to this point! Let’s play ball!
@ravidravidravid
2) Turf Protects Topsoil From Water And Wind Erosion
Our nation's topsoil is not a renewable resource. Wind and water may erode the topsoil into rivers, lakes and oceans. Once gone, it cannot be replaced in our lifetimes.
@ravidravidravid
3) Courses Improve Community Aesthetics
Turf not only keeps things cooler on a hot day; it also reduces noise pollution. Turf also reduces the glare of bright sunlight more than pavement or buildings. Plus, the community gains beauty and function from the course.
@ravidravidravid
2 cont.) Turf controls erosion by capturing and slowing fast-flowing water from storms. Turf has a dense system of roots and shoots. Its normal growth patterns create organic matter. Together, the dense shoot and root growth slow surface water runoff.
@ravidravidravid
2 cont.)For example, during most rainstorms, very little soil is lost from areas covered by well-maintained turf. However, there is a considerable loss of soil from bare ground and cropland. Studies show that turf holds up to 20 times more soil than traditionally-farmed cropland.
@ravidravidravid
5 cont.) Some studies have shown that certain types of turf can even absorb carbon monoxide. This is especially beneficial near roads where carbon monoxide is most concentrated.
Well this one was special. Honored tonight for what I will always call field of the year. Yes it’s groundskeeper of the year but it couldn’t have been done without a special group of guys. I always tell people I’m the luckiest turf manager out there and I mean it.
That’s a wrap on my third season as a head guy. Biggest take away for myself this year is this. I got rid of the need to be perfect, I’ve always wanted to be perfect but there’s no such thing. The need is to be consistent. Provide consistency day in and day out. Now onto football
@ravidravidravid
4 cont.) The tiny tunnels the earthworms provide create even more places for the water to go. As water soaks into the grass and the soil below, it is filtered and cleansed. This process is so effective that many golf courses have become water recycling sites.
@ravidravidravid
4) Turf Absorbs Rainwater
Rain is an important source of clean groundwater - which supplies much of our drinking water. Yet, during severe storms, water may run into streams and lakes, where it can't move through the soil to reach the groundwater.
@ravidravidravid
4 cont.) Turf easily absorbs and filters runoff water during and after storms. Turf absorbs water because its growth habitat creates many tiny spaces that trap and hold moisture. In addition, well-maintained turf encourages as many as 300 earthworms per square yard.
@ravidravidravid
5.) Turf Helps Beat The Heat and Improve The Air We Breathe
It's cooler in August in the park or in the country than on city streets. This cooler temperature is due to more than the shade. The grass itself can reduce the temperature.
@ravidravidravid
5 cont.) Synthetic turf can be twice as hot as green, growing turf - and asphalt is hotter still. Around urban areas, these green areas of grass and trees can actually reduce the energy needed for air conditioning.
@ravidravidravid
5 cont.) Turf also improves the air we breathe. The turf growth process takes carbon dioxide from the air and releases the oxygen we need. A landscape of turf, trees, and shrubs about 2,000 square feet in size generates enough oxygen for one person for one year.
A day late, but yesterday was a great day. First opening day as a head groundskeeper and first minor league game at this gorgeous ball park. Field played well and the grass isn’t dead so I’d say it was a good day.
6th Opening Day in professional baseball. 2nd as a Head Groundskeeper. Blessed is an understatement. Love this team and city. Lgd

This past week was tough. I had a major career learning experience and set back. I got knocked down a peg and humbled. Yet I still love this job every single day, even in the hardest times, it’s still fun going to work daily.
Another GREAT job from the crew. 5:30 of an absolute dumper of a storm, just under an inch. In my opinion we could’ve started on time for a 7:05 start, but I’ll take a 7:20 start.
Thoughts on “field conditions” the announcers keep harping on? Turf manager in me is going off. Tough to tell unless you’re there. Roof is open, high humidity? Moisture? Did the stage bring it up?
Game 69/69. Extremely proud of the crew for all their hard work this year. Also excited to announce we are officially the only team in the Texas League without a rainout in 2024!
Took a video post game last night using our new favorite machine. Having an
@ABISportsTurf
is a game changer. Light nail and broom, all in one, post game to set us up great for today! Our
@DuraEdge
infield is dialed in and playing great.
Still hard to share because of the eyesores. But also nice to see the progression in growth. 1st picture was taken July 15th, exactly two weeks ago. Pushing the Bermuda to fill hard. Proud of the crew for trusting the process.
Got to be apart of something really special. The first baseball game ever played at River Front stadium. A lot of work has been done to get to this point. Field design is a tip of the cap and nod to the
@CityofWichita
flag for this game.
Congratulations to the inaugural class of SportsField Management magazine Rising Star Award winners! Read all about them in this month's digital edition or be on the lookout for the physical copy in your mailbox.
Blankets came off today! In my opinion, this is the start of our season. We have a lot of work to do in a little over a month. It’s been a very beneficial winter for growing grass, wet and mild in temps. Hope this shows how blankets benefit! Green grass in February! I’ll take it!
Do I regret spraying the rye out? No. Will we ever do it again, probably not. However the field is filling in nicely. Slowly but surely! July 15th -> Aug 28th
New home for this
@ABISportsTurf
! Huge shoutout to
@TFieldscape
for this and huge shoutout to ownership for believing in us and allowing us to add this to our fleet!
No worse feeling then getting woken up to a torrential downpour on a game day. Went and checked on the field at 5:30am. Ain’t nothing but a thing for
@DuraEdge
ready for 2pm early work.
I’m excited that we are cutting at .4. Not sure many baseball fields cut that low. One thing I am not excited about is the amount of winter kill we have. Pushing the Bermuda to fill in. Proud of the crew for all their hard work and believing the process.
The not so pretty side to the turf life. From the stands the field looks great. With the high winds and warm spring we’re already battling hot spots. So we attacked it today by verticutting and bayonet tine aeration. Good news is the Bermuda is waking up so only a matter of time.
One day. The difference one day makes. I used to spray our homestand package on Sundays so we could pop for Tuesday of the homestand opener. One day, weather adjusted that spray, and forced me to wait till Monday, I realized by waiting one day it gets us through the entire week.
Bumming that I have to leave before it’s over, yet such a great opportunity! Got to work the SEC Tournament on the groundscrew. An amazing experience, to see some friends and make a ton of new ones. Such an amazing experience! Huge shoutout to
@Aualum9496
for bringing me out!
Had a rain game last night. We tried to make it to 5 but had to suspend play and resume today. Come in to fix the plate and this is what we got. Black stick stays undefeated and continues to blow my mind.
