I never post personal things but today I want to acknowledge the passing of Gracie, the sweetest and gentlest dog who loved smelly, muddy puddles and who hated clean, warm baths. And who really was my best friend. Hug your furry friends tonight. Good girl, Gracie, good girl. 😥
Due to Omicron’s spread, I just cancelled my flight to Victoria BC where I had hoped to spend Xmas with my eldest daughter and family ☹️. Not whining. Just saying that if you’re voluntarily making sacrifices this Holiday to help stop COVID + protect loved ones, you are not alone.
I rarely post anything personal. But here’s a selfie of my 90-yr-old mother who I took to Scotland for one last visit to see family in March 2020, right before Covid hit. Mum passed away this morning (a stroke, not Covid). If you’re able, hug your Mom today, or give her a call😥
Only 6 reporters got to ask questions today at Kenney’s newser where he + officials ate up almost an hour with repetitive statements. The gov’t has used the pandemic to restrict the ability of journos to hold gov’t to account on many issues including, ironically, the pandemic.
@ABDanielleSmith
@JustinTrudeau
I asked the PM why he didn't meet with Premier Smith today.
His response: "Always happy to meet with any premier whenever they ask me to meet."
PM's staff said they gave Smith a day-ahead alert he'd be in AB (as they do with all preems) - and it's up to her to ask for a meeting.
“I apologize.”
“I won’t apologize.”
Two quotes from Premier Kenney during tonight’s pandemic news conference. I guess he’s covered all apology-related bases.
The organization running the Canada Pension Plan (the CPP Investment Board) has a bone to pick with the Alberta Pension Plan Engagement Panel and a "failure" to hold meaningful consultations with the public.
Premier Kenney also said “All of the forestry experts will tell you that these regions of Alberta have been overdue for a major fire.” Well here’s a quote from U of A wildfire expert Mike Flannigan on our longer fire seasons: “It’s climate change in action, absolutely.”

In politics a win is a win is a win - unless you're a premier running in a cherry-picked seat where you only squeak out a victory, lose urban polls to the NDP, and capture lower % support than the neophyte UCP candidate in 2019. Then the win is a warning.
The irony/chutzpah of Kenney dismissing a UCP-party leadership review because he’s dealing with a “life and death crisis” that he created by lifting pandemic restrictions in July that led to this life and death crisis and calls for a leadership review…
In a Calgary scrum today, Premier Kenney said, “The carbon tax didn’t stop forest fires in British Columbia or in Alberta.” Um, I’m not sure that’s how carbon taxes, wildfires and climate change work.

@RicMcIver
Cabinet ministers remain cabinet ministers during an election. Even if the Conservatives had won, the Liberal ministers would have remained ministers until a new government was sworn in. In that event would you have waited weeks to ask for federal help?
A newspaper I have kept for 50 years just so I could tweet it today. 😁 What’s really remarkable is just how friggin huge newspapers were back in the day. I believe paper boys/girls used forklift trucks to make their deliveries...
Confirmed by Premier Kenney’s office that when he talked about Alberta possibly losing “$1 Billion” in the Keystone XL pipeline project, he was talking US dollars. The actual amount is about $1.1 Billion US. Or approximately $1.5 Billion CDN.
Today, Jason Copping introduced himself as Health Minister at a partisan UCP event. Just as Danielle Smith wore her premier's hat at a UCP event Thurs. Both stomp on convention that premiers + cabinet ministers not campaign under gov't titles during elxns. They know better but...
Wow! Rachel Notley ejected from the legislative assembly. She refused to apologize after accusing UCP gov’t House Leader Jason Nixon of misleading the House. All to do with government’s Bill 22 that eliminates the independent office of Election Commissioner.

Lots of talk about bringing Alberta percapita spending in line with other provinces to slash spending. No talk of bringing our tax rates in line with other provinces to raise revenue .
#ableg
Incredible! Alberta’s UCP government will use new legislation- Bill 22 - to fire Election Commissioner Lorne Gibson who has been investigating the 2017 UCP leadership race (and has so far issued $208,000 in fines against the Callaway leadership campaign).

The pro-Jason Kenney ad in today’s Edmonton Journal quotes from my column last March. Another quote not used from same column: “we’d be in a massive debt now no matter who won the 2015 provincial election. A calamitous drop in the price of oil will do that to an Alberta budget.”
Cabinet swap. Jason Copping becomes Health Minister. Tyler Shandro becomes Labour and Immigration Minister. If only there was an analogy for this situation. Shuffling something something on the deck of a ship, perhaps.
When Danielle Smith opened her UCP event today, she chose to speak in her role as premier. That's a no-no. She shouldn't be wearing her premier hat during partisan events. Wildfire updates are important but Smith can hold separate news events for those - as she has done till now.
Treaty Six Chiefs met with Premier Smith today. They were not impressed: "It was clear from our discussions that Premier Smith does not understand Treaty or our inherent rights nor does she respect them."

To everybody who has commented on my leaving the Journal, thank you! Just to be clear, I was not fired. I took a voluntary buyout. I will be writing my regular column until the end of August. Then I will let you know what I plan to do next. Thanks again everyone. I am humbled.
Imagine if we had no speed limits on highways except “common sense + “personal responsibility.” And the government said we’re ok as long as we have space in hospital for all the accident victims.
This is what makes no sense to me. Kenney says he opposes a shutdown but his do nothing approach right now almost guarantees a shutdown down the road.

From govt’s news release: “(MLAs) can be called back to the Legislature in the event of an emergency that requires the Assembly to meet.” Well, good to know the UCP will reopen the Assembly if the province ever faces, you know, an emergency. 🤪
AB Gov’t: “K-12 education funding temporarily adjusted.” Translation: “We’re forcing school boards to lay off thousands of people during a pandemic. And we’re announcing this via a news release on a Saturday.”
Our newest columnist is a familiar face when it comes to Alberta politics.

The report into Kaycee Madu’s phone call last March to the Edmonton police chief says the Justice Minister did not interfere in the administration of justice. However, report also says, “Did Minister Madu attempt to interfere with the administration of justice? He did.” And…
When asked why he had a bottle of whiskey at the Sky Palace working meeting, Kenney answered with a non-sequitur: “Somebody gave me one for my 30th birthday.” 🤔I wonder what the Sky Supper would have looked like if somebody had gifted Kenney with a unicycle instead.
As if it couldn’t get more confusing. Kenney’s office now says it made an error! Says the $1.1 billion Keystone equity liability is in CAD$, not US$. But adds there’s also $400 Million CAD in loan guarantees.
But I ask aren’t both amounts at risk, equalling $1.5 B CAD? 🤔
@coreyhogan
We’re in a pandemic, people in hospital, people dying. Kenney keeps suggesting he’s simply following Hinshaw’s advice when asked why he’s not doing more. This story blows that argument apart. He seems to be using her as a shield. Science should drive policy, not other way around
Here is a summary of today’s

update. We have identified 919 new cases in Alberta. Sadly, we have also reported 5 additional deaths, bringing the provincial total to 357. My thoughts are with everyone grieving today, due to COVID19 or any other reason. (1/4)

Minister Madu has been dropped from cabinet. (Have to ask: When did Premier Kenney first find out about Madu’s phone call to the Edmonton police chief?)
I have spoken with Minister Madu about the March 10 incident reported in the media today.
I conveyed to him my profound disappointment in his decision to contact the Edmonton Police Chief after receiving a ticket for a traffic violation.

When Alberta’s War Room demands Netflix “tell the truth” in the kids’ movie Bigfoot Family, is the war room referring to cartoon animals having the ability to talk - or people contemplating the use of a bomb to mine for oil? Only one of those is fantasy.
Did Brian Jean just mention me during Question Period to suggest I am now defending the Sovereignty Act? 😬 He might want to read my latest poll for The Star published yesterday. 🙂
But running a dummy candidate is old-time, backroom, unsavoury politics. Even without a criminal investigation, the revelations about the UCP leadership race raise questions about the ethics/honesty of the Kenney campaign then, and now.
@EmmaLGraney
@Graham_Journal
Graham called this at the time. And let it be said, running a dummy candidate isn’t against the rules or the law. Unless money (or valuable in-kind services) changed hands in a way that evaded campaign finance scrutiny.
@ChuckWurster
If Kenney were to hold 2 newsers today, one devoted Covid and one on anything else (Madu, etc) then journos would focus on Covid at 3:30. Kenney is deliberately trying to avoid questions on Madu by being available only once this week. Don’t blame the media. Blame Kenney.
Thanks Charles. I’m afraid our ever-diminishing news media simply isn’t equipped to deal with the enormity of change/upheaval/chaos generated by the Kenney government.

Brian Jean (the anti-Kenney Trojan horse) has just been wheeled inside the UCP castle. Jean won the UCP’s nomination contest to be the party’s candidate in the yet-to-be called Ft. McMurray-Lac La Biche byelection. Wonder when Kenney will call to congratulate Jean 🤔

A clarification from Premier Danielle Smith, who is now echoing what the Justice Ministry said yesterday: "At no time have I communicated with Crown prosecutors." This comes after she said publicly, at least twice, she's spoken directly with them about COVID-19 cases.

Smith's tactic allows Jennifer Johnson - if elected - to sit in Independent MLA purgatory until Johnson is deemed rehabilitated and can join the UCP caucus later.
To head off an anticipated verbal attack during tonight's leadership debate, UCP Leader Danielle Smith takes action against her party's candidate in Lacombe-Ponoka who spouted vile transphobic statements.

From the section of the Ethics Commissioner's report into Premier Smith's call with Pawlowski: "Speaking to an Attorney General about a specific ongoing criminal case, in the way that Premier Smith did on the call with Minister Shandro, is not acceptable."
