Design Twitter upset about giving back to the community with free resources.
My take: We’ve been doing this for years. It doesn’t ruin peer careers. It reduces shit clients. It promotes a creators work & builds reputation. It helps others & encourages more ppl to give back too.
I have reviewed about 250-300 design candidates in the last three weeks. I would guess that I have to search for their work 50% the time. If I do happen to find a portfolio site (maybe slightly over 50% of the time I actually can), half of THOSE require a password I don’t have.
In-car UX still sucks. Over reliance on touch. overdesigned & embellished interfaces burden nearly every system. CarPlay hasn’t improved, with the exception of a handful of apps allowed to grace the screen. They poorly predict what info/controls people need in a given situation.
For over a year, we’ve been working on Libra and
@Calibra
. We are building a wallet on top of the Libra network and currency. It will be one of many wallets that enable the billions of banked and under/unbanked people to store and transact safely around the globe.
I recently left Meta after 7 great years. It was a solid run and was tough to leave. I was lucky to work on great problems w incredible people.
Today, I'm elated to share that I've taken a role to lead design at
@lightspark
. Stoked to be working w

and the team again
Teehan+Lax would have been 20 years old this week. The site was down for awhile, but I brought it back online today for a little nostalgia. Still holds up okay for a nearly decade old website!
I’m looking forward to sharing all the work in progress product design we have been doing on
@calibra
for the near year we have been working on it. Standalone app, and the integrations with WhatsApp and Messenger.

The iOS 11 GUI from
@facebookdesign
is available. This year, we added Origami components with motion, as well as continuing to support Sketch and Photoshop. Go get it and make awesome shit.
Re: Jony
Like any sound design leader, if they are/were good at their job, they have well established people, processes, and culture in place so that you will never know they are not there. Also opens the door for a new era of Apple in years to come as their presence dissipates.
My job as a business owner at Teehan+Lax, and now my job as an employee at Facebook, are the same: Create environments for people to do their best work. That will either keep people around, or they’ll be leaving for the right reasons.
Launch day at
@lightspark
!
We believe Lightning will be the winning open payment protocol on the Internet. For the past year, we've been working on a platform that gives developers and businesses a powerful and simple way to use the Lightning Network.
Open sourcing the Universal Money Address (UMA) standard. It allows people to send fiat & crypto via their UMA-enabled exchange, wallet, or bank. Also, memorable addresses that are formatted like email and are interoperable e.g. "$alice
@wallet
.com" > "$bob
@exchange
.com"
We’ve
Big news today.
@Coinbase
has chosen
@Lightspark
to integrate the Lightning Network into their product. We’re hard at work refining the details before launch. We’re excited to play a part in bringing easy-to-use, fast, cost-effective Bitcoin transactions to Coinbase customers.
Starting today,
@coinbase
customers can instantly send, receive, or pay with Bitcoin on Lightning directly from their accounts.
@lightspark
makes implementing Lightning easy, and the Coinbase design team made the experience look and work flawlessly. Crypto needs more companies
What’s the worst piece of advice you’ve ever given?
Mine: in 2011, I advised someone *not* to sell a side hustle for a bunch of BTC. At the time, the total amounted to about $30k USD. Today, it’s worth half a billion dollars.
Most software doesn’t age well, whereas other forms of physical design can (e.g. cars, furniture, architecture, watches). Classic games perhaps is an exception. What are others?
This PSA goes out to the designers who apply for jobs without a portfolio. If you’re submitting a job application for a product designer and choose not to include your portfolio in your application or resume, you won’t get far. The job you’re applying for requires you to
Frustrated with cursor placesment & text selection with the new iPhone?
Long press on the space bar to properly manipulate cursor placement. Game changing!!!
When we ran Teehan+Lax (~40 people at the time) and we fell on harder times, my business partner and I didn’t take salary so we could pay staff and not have to let anyone go. It worked out in the end, and was one of the best business decisions we ever made. I don’t miss one penny
This is the most informative, educational video on tape measures you’ll ever watch. And yes, you should watch it.
I always thought the play in the hooked tab was from poor manufacturing. Turns out, it’s a feature!
I hosted my sons & 9 of their 18yo old classmates in California for a week (they’re all from Toronto). It was my gift to them and a send off for university in the fall. Turns out it was a huge gift for me too. I learned a lot. They all give me so much hope for the future.
I’m looking for a company or person to help us with some illustration/motion design. The output will be a ~2-3min story-driven video that illustrates the world’s payment networks (past and future). Any recommendations?
It really doesn’t matter where you work, or what industry you work in. Sitting down and inviting an honest conversation is a powerful instrument and one we all have access to at all times and places.
the ease of sharing stuff on
@figmadesign
is really changing the game...
no more waiting around for
@gt
and
@jlax
's PSD to drop, now you get a figma link almost 24hrs after WWDC 🤯
@figmadesign
😢 There are better ways to go about this. This type of stuff creates the wrong environment for our industry. We shouldn’t give our work away with the hopes that someone may pay for it (especially true when you potentially profit from it). I love you, but we can do better. xo
I’m going out on a limb and say illustrators don’t feel valued enough. Dismissing any concern (real or imagined) perhaps isn’t fair. That said, IMO, there is no way a free resource can ever come close to the value they provide.
