I randomly received a press release from Bong Revilla's staff that's supposed to psych me into thinking "this guy's putting in work, so I'll share it on my blog". I can't bring myself to say "I politely decline".

Isko repetitively referring to opposition "pinklawan", "dilawan" and "otso diretso inidoro" while convincing us his campaign is not about colors. So ironic.

Sarap pakita kay Angeles 'tong scene na 'to. What Toni Collette said is what Martial Law victims and all of us are saying to the Marcoses, y'all.
Poetry is a way of living in the world. I don't produce texts. I don't do it to be studied. It's a way of trying to come to peace with the world. It's not about answers. It's about questions. You come to poetry not out of what you know,but out of what you wonder. -Lucille Clifton

Agree. And I was so impressed too by the applicant. Takes guts, keen curiosity, and proclivity to think outside the box to ask that - all good traits in an employee. They should hire her.
Never ever regretted voting for Leni Robredo. And Kiko Pangilinan. Even if we lost. I will vote for them again in a heartbeat should they run again - along with the socialists. We need more socialists. More IPs. More of everyone. A free & safe country needs equal representation.
I love the indie writing community here. The camaraderie. Amplifying each other's work. Transcontinental trauma sharing in DMs. How a year ago, I knew no one; was just someone who writes bad love poems. Now, I got a tribe saying we believe in your bad love poems. You need a book.

My personal mission before 2022 ends is to submit to both
@TBQuarterly
and The Paris Review to see whether my writing is more of a burrito or a croissant.
Honestly I think it is more pandesal than anything.
After plentiful rejections, what heart-lifting news to receive a poem acceptance from an exceptional journal,

March 2023, y'allπ
Third you-almost-made-it rejection from a 'high-tier' academic journal. Strangest thing is the ease. No bitterness, no feeling even. My views on publishing & "dream journals" are changing. I am moving away from them. More local, Asian, more "smaller" presses. More alignment.π
Got my

For the love of Jollibee stop referring to the "discovery" of the Philippines. WE WEREN'T DISCOVERED. WE WERE COLONIZED. People lived there! Other cultures knew we were there! Y'all are giving Magellan credit for a "discovery" when all he found in the Philippines was his grave.

This 2024, I really wish lit mags and writers stop doing that shit where they follow you and once you follow back, they wait a few days to unfollow you. It's infantile and antithetical to the idea of community. Please leave that in 2023, y'all.
First time making a collaborative poem with a fellow writer. Wow. How satisfying and heartwarming it is that your pieces fit so well together, like earth and water, even though you're countries apart and no prior brainstorming took place.

People who don't read poems tell me the reason they don't is they don't understand them. "Too academic", "too deep", "Morse code". It's unfortunate because there's no greater joy than another human saying, "Your poem made me feel seen."
We need more poems like that in the world.

I wrote this as the summer marched on its warm, tropical feet and the shrikes, sunbirds, and swallows trilled in a mini forest I stumbled upon during one of my walks.
Not enough attention is given to the power of a good rejection letter. One that doesn't sound patronizing, but compels you to actually send more work. I just received one from
@RoomMagazine
and it was one of the most encouraging, well-crafted letters I received. Left me pumped.
People forget poets/writers/artists are also humans like everyone else. They have opinions. Opinions are neither higher truth or law. Don't put artists on a pedestal. Don't tolerate their condescension. Treat them as equals. Because they are. No human being is above another.
As much as I hope writers are not placed on a "never accept" list based on where they were previously published, no one is deemed unworthy to write poems. Even if somebody says so, do it anyway. Write,and write furiously. Shamelessly. Do it as an act of resistance,an act of love.
So performative and trademark Marcos. I applaud the audacity to wear tattoos and traditional wear of the region whose indigenous leaders your family tortured and murdered during Martial Law.

A note to the MTRCB: tite/ titi, and kiki, puki/ puke & pepe are all legit Filipino words for penis & vagina. There are even children's books on this (pic of daughter's books). Normalize calling body parts as they are-without shaming. You wouldn't censor paa or kamay, would ya?
THIS. Reason why Literature in the PH remains stunted is, apart from Filipinos do not like reading, only a small contingent of writers gets the spotlight. Also gatekeeping in the "literary community" like writing only qualifies if written by Palanca awardees & bigshot boomers.
Pakisali rin ang mga di traditionally published, wala sa mga mata ng greater literary "community" (I hated typing that out), mga manunulat na di lang taga-Luzon at lalo na di taga-Metro Manila, na walang workshop background, walang supporta ng malaking establishment

"Beautiful imagery and rhythm. However, I feel like your poems are often cut short."

"Too sentimental. I do not like your poem."

I have deadlines at work, my kid graduates in 2.5 hours (!), there are 13 hours left to submit to the Palanca Awards, and I thought of sending an essay AND a poetry collection, both still unfinished, as I'm half-hearted about the PH's "most prestigious literary awards".
