Boycott the World Cup? Absolutely not. Instead we will go there and use our presence to highlight the issues and hold power to account. But only if they let us, and no one feels uncomfortable, and we don’t actually have to do anything.

Elite footballers are arguably better at their jobs than top people in almost all other professions. The sheer number of players around the world, and the tiny number who go pro, and the even smaller group who are great… No other sport has that level of competition.

Lineker isn’t some radical. He might call out what he sees as inhumane treatment here and there but always stops short of proposing anything that could actually threaten to change the status quo. He’s a soft, harmless liberal centrist and somehow even that’s beyond the pale now.
