In Sept 1917, Biggles was transferred Flying Sopwith Camels, on his first day with 266 Sdn, Biggles avenged his friend Wells, was then shot down himself and crashed in a tree behind German lines.  Happening upon a German balloon team which was being strafed… 1/2

In September 1916, after 2 weeks of training, 2nd Lt. James “Biggles” Bigglesworth, late of the Rifle Regiment, arrived at 169 Sqn, Royal Flying Corps, stationed just north of St. Omer, France.  With 169, Biggles flew the F.E.2b “pusher” with his young observer/gunner, Mark Way

#OnThisDay 1915: Italian cruiser 'Giuseppe Garibaldi' is torpedoed was the Adriatic by Austro-Hungairan submarine U-4. The cruiser was hit near the aft boiler rooms and sank within minutes on an even keel. 43 crewmen were killed, while the remaining 525 were rescued.

#OnThisDay 1914: Having entered the German colony of Togoland, the British Gold Coast Regiment encountered an enemy police force at a factory in Notsé, near Lomé. Returning fire, Alhaji Grunshi became the first soldier in British service to fire a shot in the First World War.

#OnThisDay 1915: 600 men from two regiments of the Australian 3rd Light Horse Brigade attacked Ottoman positions on the Nek at Gallipoli. The ill-fated, repeated bayonet charges resulted in 372 Australians killed or wounded. Ottoman casualties were negligible.

#OnThisDay 1916: A fire broke out in the Tavannes railroad tunnel near Verdun. The tunnel, overcrowded with soldiers was used as an improvised barracks, first aid post and ammunitions depot during the battle, and the rapidly spreading fire claimed some 474 lives.
