I think they’re finally all on the map. Nearly 400 men from
#Petersfield
and the surrounding villages who died in

. As always, any information or photographs to add would be wonderful.

Please tell me you’re doing more Olympics. It’s the only way I’ll get through the next few weeks with my sense of humour intact. Anus down! 😂

When Princess Diana died my 3 y-old son built ‘heaven’ out of his wooden blocks, added an upstairs for princesses, and a lean-to for pets. Never underestimate their ability to absorb what’s going on around them and interpret it in a way they can understand. We weren’t religious.
Two of my family treasures. The matchbox holder sent back to my gr-grandma and listed among my great-uncle Wilfred’s personal effects. And the flag my grandma waved on Armistice Day, four days before they received the telegram informing them of his death.

Don’t apologise. This former supply teacher recognises the note of fear behind the stern countenance. These kids are not in the mood to co-operate.
I bought a copy of ‘Lawrence and the Arabs’ from
@The_PBS
last week and found it full of old news clippings, including a review of the very book I am currently reading. Some things just find their way into the right hands.

My walks take me through many village churchyards and past many interesting headstones. This is one of my favourites.

Never! My OH had the rugby on in the background and I said ‘Isn’t that Olive and Mabel’s dad?’ You are the only sports commentator whose voice I have ever been able to recognise. (And that’s as a wife of 30+ years with a sports -mad husband).
So many
#HampshireRegiment
men are remembered here on the Menin Gate. 8 from Petersfield and the surrounding villages, plus another 7 from other regiments.
Meet future PC Harry! Harry has had a truly awful time recently, and when we heard how much he loves his new Christmas present, an electric Police bike, we had to pay him a visit!
Harry professionally led us round his street in full uniform. 👏

It's our final stop of this trip. Visiting the final resting place of my great-uncle, Wilfred Ball. Close by lies Edward Ray, the man he died trying to save from the canal at Roubaix.

A wonderful afternoon with

. Sitting in the Upper Room listening to people relaxing on the lawn was an unforgettable experience. Thank you to Simon and his team
@TalbotHousTubby
for making us so welcome.
Rather off the usual track for UK visitors but so worth the trip from Ieper. You can see the whole Flanders front from the top, and then wind down through 22 floors of fascinating and informative displays on the Belgian war experience and beyond.

Really interesting read in Salient Points 3 about Gaza War Cemetery. Shout out to CWGC stonemason
@nader_habash
who read a tweet of mine concerning a casualty and within ten minutes sent me a photo of the grave.
@GreatWarGroup
Thanks to everyone involved in organising the
@GreatWarGroup
Conference this year. Brilliant presentations (
@louise_provan
@boiry62128
and

) and keynote speeches, fantastic company, and an international exchange of ideas, perspectives, and biscuits. Thanks
@Wim86

I finally finished the last man on the last of the local war memorials today. Only one man out of nearly 400 still eludes me. I couldn’t have done it without
@1418research
and the Long Long Trail to help me put all the pieces together. Pinned tweet. Now what?
It is fantastic what Alex and Beth have achieved in setting up
@GreatWarGroup
and gaining several hundred members since mid-September. It is such a welcoming set-up, and a credit to you both (and your trustees and contributors).
A huge thank you to my friend
@Carolin22478581
for driving me safely around Belgium and France, whilst putting up with my moments of idiocy. We’ve had a blast, and learnt a whole lot along the way. Mad Cows Forever!
There’s nothing better after a wet walk than to find the latest Salient Points magazine from
@GreatWarGroup
waiting on the doormat. I’m thrilled that my piece on General Sir John Nixon is in there. Sadly not all Generals can be exonerated over time. Thanks to all involved.

Well said Flitwick Town Council. My 90 year-old father-in-law is an unrepresentative constituent in Flitwick and has now abandoned the Conservative party after a lifetime of support.
I’m thrilled with my first prize for knitting at the Great War Group conference this year. Apparently this fine trio of judges were won over by the size of the flaps.
I’m looking forward to talking to

about the extraordinary life and career of Lt-Col Gerard Leachman, who crossed paths with TE Lawrence, Gertrude Bell, Mark Sykes, Prince Faisal, Kermit Roosevelt, General Townshend and Kim Philby’s dad gwginfo

It’s here! Thanks to everyone
@GreatWarGroup
for getting this out to us. May Santa deliver all Salient Points before the big day. In the meantime, I may need to postpone putting up the tree.
Some call it a quarterly magazine but at 110 pages and packed with content I’d say it is more of a bendy book. Kettle’s on and I’m starting with General Maude.
Well done to all

Anyone else get ‘volunteered’ to teach infants recorder club? Three notes ready by Christmas if we were lucky. Oh how I hated Monday lunchtimes 😧
What an amazing weekend in Brighton with

Out of nearly 170 names on the Petersfield War Memorial there is only one woman. This is the sad story of Emily Rutter.
Emily was born in 1912, the second daughter of William Rutter and his wife Isabel (nee Mells).
A wonderful evening
@The_PBS
invoking the spirit of a woman I’d never heard of before. Alice Dunbar Nelson was a writer, poet, teacher, political activist, abused wife, and daughter of a freed slave. Her most famous poem was a Great War poem.
The project to digitally map the men of the

district who died in

goes on apace. 11 memorials down, 3 to go. As always, any information, photos, corrections, etc gratefully received.

On holiday in NZ two years ago, we spent a wonderful evening with a German couple, a French couple and an American couple. They just couldn’t get their heads round what *we* had voted for.
Visited Duisans, Tilloy and Agny cemeteries today, as well as the Arras Memorial. Not a blade of grass was out of place and the gardeners were hard at work at Tilloy.

Another excellent presentation from

for

this afternoon. A very clear and helpful overview of how Russia went to war, pitched just right for an Eastern Front novice like me.

There is such a thing as a self-inflicted pile on, so don’t blame anyone but yourself for inviting whatever comments result from this post.
Well this was worth waiting for! Just picking it up off the doormat I could tell it’s bigger than ever; so many fascinating and varied articles.

my paternal grandmother was a Hollingworth. I wonder if we’re related 😂
Congratulations to all

Today I finally trod in the footsteps of my great-uncle William Austin (2nd KOYLI) who fought on this spot near Le Cateau, before being taken prisoner on 26/8/1914. He died in October 1918 in Germany.
@PratleyPhilip
thank you for your help.
I usually read fiction before I go to sleep at night, but

‘s 1918 A Very British Victory was unputdownable. Accessible, informative, and excellent maps and pictures. Perfect for a relative novice.

Thank you for sharing your love for your brother. I lost mine too, and it’s hard after 30 years when most people never knew they existed. We have to hold on tight to their memory.

Just to clarify, I qualified many years ago. Back in the days when Kenneth Baker was Education Secretary long enough to have training days named after him😅
I was going to try and tweet something about the many men of my area who are buried in

cemeteries around Ypres. In the end I think this stands for all of them.

One of the names on the Petersfield War Memorial is Lt-Col Gerard Leachman DSO. There’s still time to book a place for my talk

on Friday 17th March. Leachman v Lawrence; could be controversial 😉
Open the picture for details.
Further to the piece I wrote for

As everyone

What is all this talk about a Christmas ‘armistice’? Are we asking COVID to agree not to infect anyone for a few days? I don’t think it works like that. Maybe it would like a friendly game of football while we’re at it.

If any members of
@GreatWarGroup
are within reach of Petersfield on Aug 24th at 7.30pm, we are very excited that

The war memorial at All Saints, Freshwater, Isle of Wight. In the overgrown churchyard are 19 identified war graves and one unknown sailor. Although the churchyard is pretty wild, the graves are clean and legible.

The best thing about coming home from holiday is finding the latest Salient Points magazine from

I loved reading this to my own children, and used it as a teaching resource in the early 90s when we we learning about grandparents and WW2. A real treasure.

@RetirementTales
Still got mine. It was passed on by my grandad who used it throughout his teaching career, and gave it to me when I started teaching in 1987. He started teaching in the 1920s so it may well be nearly 100 years old.
Went to a very interesting talk
@The_PBS
last night about the poet Alun Lewis. I know it’s the wrong war for some 😉 but fascinating to hear how closely he followed in the steps of Edward Thomas, literally.
It’s always a pleasure to do business with
@The_PBS
who found this little gem for me. I’m very happy to report that not only did Tom Gainey, 021432 RAOC, survive the war, but little Alfie recovered from the mumps and went on to have two children of his own.
