And at last, I can share the new art I drew for the
#KatanaZERO
2LP vinyl from
@Fangamer
!
First up is the gatefold art, featuring the Dragon breaking into prison the hard way.
Next is the Steam Background for The Dragon (probably the first time I've drawn him) and his Chinese myth dragon. Sorry for the lack of cat ears and legs of average length.
#KatanaZERO
Thought I'd share a non-spoilery sample of the recent art production process for the
#KatanaZERO
DLC levels. (๐งต1/4)
First, I get handed a blank finished level layout (or part of one), along with maybe a general theme.
For example, this one was "place for explosive barrels".
Here's my take on Comedy & Tragedy from
#KatanaZERO
. I was a feeling loopy so I tried for a wackier, Genndy Tartokovsky-esque proportions to reflect their creepiness.
Finally, the inner sleeves! I decided to have some fun with these, like an isometric diorama of an in-game level.
#1
is the Club Neon level, featuring DJ Electrohead.
"For true road warriors, introducing the AITA C-900 Portable Terminal, with an expandable 3 KB of RAM and C-series CPU, and ergonomic* micro-keyboard--all encased in lightweight titanium.
Get yours today!" ๐ฅ๏ธ
And here's the Steam Background for Zero. The background was an imitation traditional Japanese samurai paintings, cherry blossoms and all.
They drew eyes real weird, man.
Hey, guys! Sorry for the silence ever since I started full-time. DLC work is going smoothly, but most of it's too spoiler-y to show.
In the meantime, here's an oddly-familiar turret design.
Just found a doodle from the
#KatanaZERO
DLC showcase a while back.
In the flooded sublevel, there was supposed to be a scientist draining the water as Zero falls in. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to animate it before the video went live. Still, might return to it later! ๐
I roughly redraw the level and fill it in with background details to look more interesting and distinct--in this case, a kitchen & mess hall area. (๐งต2/4)
This might take 2-3 drafts to get down.
Then one of the talented pixel artists transform it into presentable background that's added to the in-game level, lighting and all. (๐งต3/4)
This one was done by
@Knightsundere
, kudos to their pixel skills. Awesome work.
@Knightsundere
It's can be a slow process, but it's led to more distinct levels and fewer instances of large rooms/areas made from the same 1-2 background tiles, like you'd occasionally find in the base game. (๐งต4/4)
Hope this was an interesting sneak peek at the art side of development!
Cleaning out my Dropbox today...I found the original concept art for the 'Katana HERO' ending slides by
@FrancisCoulombe
.
I owe him big-time. Here are some of my favorites!
Dr. Edo & Lady Sakura (๐งต1/5)
I'm pleased to finally share the cover artwork I drew for
@ThirdEditions
's Yakuza tribute book, 'La Saga Yakuza', by
@VictorMoisan
. Available Sept. 10th! #้พใๅฆใ
I guess itโs officialโIโm going to be moving back to the US in August and joining
@askiisoft
full-time! ๐จ๐๏ธ
I might have like to stay in Japan and buy more fan goods after the DLC came out, but with me on board, maybe the DLC will get here faster.
Time to start packing! ๐ฆ
Well, look what came in the mail yesterdayโฆ
โฆItโs this yearโs
#KZ_Postcard
collection, featuring art by
#KatanaZero
fans from around the world! ๐ฅฐ
Itโs breathtaking to have these fan arts in physical form. Iโd frame them up on my walls, if I had enough space.
Unable to finish anything last week due to illness, but I should post something besides FAF links so here's several alternate concepts I drew for the Katana ZERO cover art/Nintendo Switch logo.
#KatanaZero
Obviously, none of these ended up used.
Done! I re-used stuff where I could.
Yeah, it hurt to ditch the hand movement after all that time animating it, but this seems less distracting as a neutral pose.
LRT: At around 3:08, you can see Duke pulling off some sweet special moves, which I had the pleasure of animating.
Kudos to
@MattMcMuscles
for showing them off!
Finally found time to watch the entire Katana ZERO fandub!
Overall, I enjoyed it! Some accents were a bit goofy, and microphone quality varied wildly, but overall it was a colossal effort by the online KZ community. Kudos to all involved.
Check it out!
Hey, all! This upcoming Fan Art Friday is a chance to make your own
#KatanaZERO
OC (original character)! Just use the template provided below (resize as needed) and send it to me via Twitter or Tumblr by the end of next week.

I finally took the time to detail the right side of the picture instead of making chicken-scratches of a blob of pure black.
On the other hand, I've simplified the details on the city in the far background, as I felt it drew the eye away from the foreground action.
For those still hankering for more Gamma 15,
@IDUnknownForte
has just finished the Dragon Mod for
#KatanaZERO
, which lets you play as Fifteen for the whole main game. Check it out!
...Just got a DM from a (presumably) Russian guy asking about the KZ DLC so he can play it before he gets mobilized to fight against Ukraine.
What the fuck do I even say. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
I just know some people will still prefer the original, which is fine, but I drew that version on an old busted laptop that couldn't handle images this size without freezing for 3~ minutes every time I pressed Ctrl+S.
