The negative reviews of AMERICAN FICTION mostly fail or refuse to believe the central ethos of the film: fatigue, if not contempt, non-white writers and artists feel at being expected to perform race and other markers authentically, which inevitably devolves into identity porn.

While the saccharine tributes to Andre Leon Talley are necessary, his life and career were anything but, actually more of a cautionary tale. Despite his trailblazing and hard work, he was treated like a house boy most of career and it took its toll in the form of addiction.

@JasonFarrJokes I've had similar experiences in my career - haven't we all. Casting directors - who have a great deal of power in the industry - are the real gatekeepers, but as Nolan was the director, hard to believe he wasn't involved in this decision. Someone from the movie should clarify.
