We need people in our lives who disagree with us. People who don’t take the same things for granted that we do. No one is parsing everything from first principles. No one has seen every bit of evidence. No one is truly objective. Your side hasn’t been right about everything.
Newsweek approached me about sharing some of my thoughts with a wider audience, so I did a thing. I might do it again, we’ll see how much pain this causes.
Brilliant insight from

The notion that our institutions are deeply and systematically racist is incompatible with the idea that those same institutions should be empowered to curtail harmful speech and ideas.
I think I’ve misjudged the ambient level of anti-semitism all these years by at least an order of magnitude. I don’t have any Jewish friends so I don’t have a lot of first hand exposure. I’ve probably unconsciously been using myself as a barometer. Since I don’t care about group
People on the right are doing to the words pedo and groomer what people on the left did to racist and white supremacist, i.e. use them so liberally against opponents that their derisiveness begins to erode. This can’t be a good idea.
At some point we may come to recognize these frivolous indulgences of elites as the conspicuous consumption that they are. The commodity being squandered here is of course time, time ordinary people don’t have to engage in this sort of navel gazing.
Some white people may choose 👍 because it feels neutral — but some academics argue opting out of 👍🏻 signals a lack of awareness about white privilege, akin to society associating whiteness with being raceless.

When I was about 8 years old a door to door salesman convinced my dad to buy a set of encyclopedias. I didn’t realize they were reference material, that you weren’t really supposed to read them like literature. Probably the single thing that had the greatest impact on my life.
The oppressive censorious social conservatism of my childhood – with its stark homophobia, tacit sexism and ambivalence to racial discrimination – was minutes away from having time of death called when another would be hegemon, so called “successor ideology”, aka wokeness,
Parts of the left have, over an astoundingly short period, become so unthinkingly committed to opposing free speech that big newspapers now continually publish evident nonsense.
The idea that Xi Jinping or Vladimir Putin dream of an "uncontrolled" internet is... words fail me.
I would never phrase this criticism this way, but there is a there there. Given one’s priors my take may be equally offensive. Politics on the left has in my opinion come too close to resembling a devouring mother with two faces. Incessant condescension in all cases, but to her

If each culture is as good or bad as the next then each is as good as itself in a prior state. Progress is therefore impossible. American slavery is as good as American emancipation under that paradigm.
Pretty crazy that treating people based on the content of their character and not their skin colour is perceived in many elite institutions as a ‘right of centre idea’
Turns out there are a few more things I need to say about the storm that’s blown up over Coleman Hughes’ TED Talk. It would mean a lot if you would read this through to the end! 🙏
The first is how unfair it is that Adam Grant got dragged into this. After Coleman gave his talk
The point I’m about to make might be too subtle for Twitter but I’ll give it a go. Over the last century or so we’ve done a decent job of educating people on the ills of discrimination, but the conception we inculcated in many cases missed the crucial nefarious aspect of it –
Elijah Muhammad encouraged his followers to abandon their slave names (surnames), as those were vestiges of enslavement. That wasn’t quite far enough in my opinion, as the most insidious residue created to perpetuate that horrid institution is our racial identities themselves.
I’m not remotely close to the singular genius of Loury, but I feel this vehement “fuck you” to my core. I don’t want your silly asterisk on anything I do.
How do I feel about racial preferences being institutionalized as the means for securing racial diversity in the elite academy?
I hate it.
I'm moved to say, "Get your hands off of my dignity!" "Don't patronize me, god damn it!"
The Supreme Court got this one right last summer.
The obsessive desire to purify our spaces, both physical and intellectual, of ideas we disagree with is ironically the contagion we need to rid ourselves of.
Unpopular Opinion: Liberal≠Democratic
Absolute democracy is not ideal. Tyranny of the majority is a legitimate problem. Ending abortion could be democratic but not liberal. Instituting slavery could be democratic but it’s illiberal. Populism is democratic. Liberalism>democracy.
Lindsay & Rufo et al. want the cancer destroyed but seem not to care if the patient lives. For some in their camp killing the patient is the goal. That’s what it is to be indiscriminate in one’s attacks. People who care about enlightenment progress won’t sign up for it.
I don’t have much to say other than I was clearly wrong. Not much else explains the hard on people seem to have for Jewish villainy across the political spectrum, and outside of it. Man people fucking suck.
I’ve gained a few followers since that Rosa Parks post, now is as good a time as any to reverse that trend lol. By the time I reached university I had grown out of my adolescent black nationalism and most of the Ressentiment that accompanied it. The residual was essentially an
The embarrassing thing here is shear obliviousness to opportunity costs and not being able to distinguish between what may be profitable for rapacious individuals versus a national economy as a whole.
Some of you really believe that Portugal, Spain, France, England, the Netherlands, etc, transported 13 million human beings across the Atlantic for close to 500 years because slavery wasn't profitable. Like, you all say it with your chests, too.
Embarrassing.
moralistic cultural hegemony. We must let go of the idea that our own conception of the good life is the only one. We have to stop trying to extort and control one another. The culture war only ends when we come to realize that the only way for everyone to win is if nobody wins.

This it’s why it’s always dumb to take your cues from your opponents, mirroring is a terrible heuristic. ‘I didn’t examine this because shitty people were all over it’ is not a defense. Need a better epistemic rubric.
The simple reason why so many people weren’t keen to discuss the ‘lab leak’ *theory* is because it was originally conflated by the right with ‘Chinese bio weapon’ conspiracies and continues to be conflated by the right with anti-Fauci conspiracies. Blame the conspiracy theorists.
If whiteness is being centred, it is by & large those levelling the accusation that are doing so. His whiteness is irrelevant to the science. Instead of disabusing bigots of the notion that it is you lend credence to their delusions by racializing scientists & their contributions

Using one’s free expression in an attempt to curtail that of others is about the most cynical and disingenuous a use of free expression imaginable. It’s worthy of criticizing with, you guessed it, more free expression. Just absent the hypocrisy.
A lot of people have a hard time with individuality, belonging is much easier in some ways. It’s a shame that we’ve reconstructed our conceptions of identity today into a set of collective narratives. A way to carry others with you, to avoid the feeling of ever really being alone
Regarding my interesting conversation from yesterday. If I’m discussing race with someone for example, and they assert that the proper definition of racism precludes white people from the possibility of experiencing it, I won’t be deferring to said definition. I don’t care what

The people who insist on finding their dignity at the level of the group, be they right wing race realists or left wing “anti-racists”, they’re always compensating for something. If you have dignity of your own to spare you don’t tend to try anchoring it in other people.
Should have known this is where we’d end up when a few years ago people started saying ‘black men are the white people of black people.’ Forget consequentialism and deontology, moral philosophy has been solved. Just find out who has the whitest soul and you’ll know who’s wrong.

I’m not a particular fan of Yang’s but it sounds to me like Acosta is doing his best to not hear/understand what Yang saying. The preponderance opinion on guns and abortion is broad access with some limitations. If he wasn’t intent on talking over Yang he might hear him.
This doesn’t quite feel like the right time for navel gazing about politics on this side of the globe but current events have ironically put our political squabbles in perspective. We agree more than we let ourselves admit, I think we can do better.
"We aren't racist we are just 'anti-anti-racist' We think the people who spend their time fighting discrimination and racism are the real problem"
Do you guys not hear yourselves?

This sounds almost as silly as Trump’s talk of voter fraud. The vast majority of black Americans polled support the same or more police funding. Majority of them also voted against “socialist” candidates. Are they resentful of themselves?
In America, to be "anti-woke" is to enable, abet or support a systematic right-wing program to censor speech and suppress diverse voices. That's what it was always about, and that's all it really is.
Can someone make the case for why inequality is in and of itself a moral issue? I’m not speaking about poverty, assume for the sake of the argument that everyone’s basic needs are met, what is wrong with some people simply having more than others?
Possibly unpopular opinion: The emergence of Omicron is more positive than most will admit. The only way for a (in all likelihood) more benign strain to have usurped Delta was for it to be more contagious. Eradication has been a lost cause for some time. Only way out is through.
If I react negatively to another's speech I'm creating a "censorious environment" that causes them to self-censor.
But my withholding my reaction isn't self-censorship? 🤔

Ideologies offer shorthand approximations of reality; they are maps, not the terrain itself. It should be obvious to us all that there is no comprehensive lens with which to glimpse reality. Every lense distorts somewhat, you’re better off having several & trusting none entirely.
Smith’s barbaric display of honour culture last night wasn’t the only one. Chris Rock is wrong as well & not for the joke, for accepting the terms of engagement. By not charging Will Smith he’s tacitly saying this is a legitimate form of conflict resolution for offensive remarks.

Not effective at all. The “work” that’s being done for the most part comes in the form of etiquette training for those inhabiting elite cosmopolitan spaces. It’s culture promulgation, which does little to improve the material condition of those hampered by historical racism.

The culture wars are ultimately about who gets to impose their moral paradigm on the collective. The thing to keep in mind regardless of whether you’re more sympathetic to woke or anti-woke, liberalism has to win ultimately. Pluralism to be specific. Tolerance for real this time.
The idea that it’s not enough to not be racist, one must also be ‘anti-racist’ (ie striving for racial equity) is fundamentally flawed. Setting aside the pathology of reifying racial identity, the notion that I need something more from you than to not discriminate is dehumanizing
