Sat round the table @ the hostel in Swanage tonight; asked students to send me their best pics of the day via airdrop (ok they suggested this bit & taught me how to do it). One student was the absolute winner today with this one. You have to click it to see it all.

And with that the summer came to a end... I will leave the Summer of Geog here, awaiting the yearly arrival of a US hurricane. Thanks to all those who have contributed. Slides can be found here links to news articles in notes section & linked to photos.
Yesterday was the start of my presidential year. Itโs the first time the role has been taken on by a female state secondary school teacher, still active in the classroom. Feeling lots of expectation (mainly from me) but I will be 10% braver & share my journey!
@WomenEd
10 lessons for yr 7; a home-based local FW enquiry. May be of use to someone. Quite simple but various data collection methods. Could work with yr 6 & includes adapted sheets for KS1, 1 off activities.

Lovely! Great to hear this is still enthusing you. Thatโs made my day. Here is link to the LA earthquake version, slightly updated (if itโs the right link)!
Today it was time for one of my favourite ever Twitter magpies: plotting eye-witness earthquake accounts using grid references stolen from

I am honoured and excited to be the incoming President of the Geographical Association (
@The_GA
). Thanks for all the lovely messages of support. My theme for the year is โgeography for everyoneโ. I want to celebrate everyoneโs personal geographies & passions and promote EDI.
Working on retrieval practice & application of knowledge using The UK in 100 seconds. Thanks
@DanRavenEllison
for the resource. Used it as a stimulus to help recap what we knew about the physical landscape, then planned our own 100 second clip about geology, National Parks etc
Looking at how we approach โassessโ questions with yr 12. Thanks to
@ploguey
for the idea for this. Worked v well. Also, thanks
@ZLabe
for the climate anomalies graph. V useful for my lesson today. Thermometer sheets shared in my drive; link in the comments.

For those looking my LA Earthquake mapping resources, many apologies for a previously rogue link. Didnโt seem to work earlier. This one should do ๐ . I have emailed several people tonight too.

This list of websites and online resources may be of use to geography NQTs or new trainees. Do let me know if there is anything I can add to it. Thanks
#geographyteacher
Had a really good lesson with year 7 this week using the Primark website. Some great
#geographyteacher
resources on there. The 360 tour is powerful; gd to compare to other sweat shop images. Lots to discuss. Happy the share the table of data.
Inspired by the keynote from
@_jopayne
, I have created this to use for cover work whilst out on fieldwork this week and next. May be of use to people for the end of term. Simple and ready to go. Happy to share.

What an evening. Thanks for the lovely Tweets & messages. In my head I am still just a few years into my teaching career & everyone else, they are the grown ups! My colleagues tell me this is not the case! Hopefully I can follow the excellent lead of
@GeoBlogs
&
@AlastairHackney
.
Just updated my profile info to include
#NPQSL
. Found out a passed today. I enjoyed doing my project and wanted to say thanks to
@EnserMark
for the idea (a long time back). I set up an in-school CPL course based on the
@every_lesson
series. Itโs been impactful. Great feedback. ๐
Using a 3D map of the British Isles with a VI* student. So very powerful but also garnered a lot of interest from the other students around them. Want to order more. Most powerful learning moment this year, so far.

Money no longer grows on trees here! My summer financial simulation, for education purposes begins today! My bank started trading at 5pm. Job centre opens tomorrow at 9am. Each child has been given ยฃ20. Trading ceases at 5pm on Friday 1st Sept. Who will come out on top?
Off to Sheffield do some gaโing (as my younger colleague calls it). Not sure the President and Vice President should be travelling together though. Not good disaster management. The Royal Family wouldnโt approve ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐๐
Bed dilemmas. After many weeks of trying to decide on a new bed, for child number 2, I finally took the plunge. The main issue was I knew it would cover up Antarctica. I decided in the end to take this small hit. Unfortunately, Jack noticed straight away. He wasnโt impressed.

Very excited to be on my way to the
@SAGTeach
conference in Inverness. For this leg of my
@The_GA
tour, I am taking my own special geographical leaders! Thanks to
@AlastairHackney
for the idea of the ๐ ๐! Kids are beyond excited!
Me to a year 9 student: โPlease leave the map on the wall alone, it has been there longer than you have been alive. It hasnโt done you any harm. Stop fiddling with it!โ
How to feel ancient, in one short classroom exchange!

shout out. Fieldwork query. Using RICEPOTS for the first time. Finding it quite confusing. How does one use it? How does it look on a finished land use map?
And I am off! Northbound for Sheffield. Had to explain to the helpful TFL man at Liverpool Street that I needed some help finding the lift, due to excessive baggage! Nothing changes. ๐
#GAConf23
Getting ready to give a little talk today.
My daughter has told me to be more goal keeper
Apparently before a game the keeper goes to their goal to check what the surface is like and how the ball may roll and whether it will be slippery etc.

What a day! Thanks for all the lovely messages of support from the great

Today I learnt what a lanyard tree is & the intricate processes involved in putting together a GA tote bag! ๐คฃ Exciting to be a part of the big set up!

Key questions for today, after watching live PE with Joe Wicks... If I do this with my kids each day, will my stomach look like his and why does his house have no clutter? Where is it all? Also, does he play that guitar? Important questions.
#remotelearning
Inspired by a tweet from
@kate_stockings
, I planned this lesson on the London Underground. Used it as retrieval lesson to recap and draw together ideas from our GCSE settlement unit and UK landscapes. Worked very well.

As part of my
@The_GA
presidential year, I am heading out on tour! Myself & students from
@OaksParkHighSch
will be visiting schools & universities, advocating for geography, sharing lived experiences of place, and promoting geography for all. Watch this space for updates!

A cheeky year 7 (in the chat): โgo on miss, donโt leave me waiting!โ
Me (on my mic): โwhat do you mean?โ
Cheeky year 7: โitโs at least 5 mins into the lesson and you havenโt said โright folksโ yet!โ
Really tickled me!
Every year my neighbours put this up with the North Pole facing south. I have told them how much this upsets me. Tonight they have gone out so I made some alterations.

@MrsReedGeo
for your idea on studying โour local placeโ for A level geography; annotating a local map. Think my studentโs local area may be quite different to yours but a great idea.
It is year 12 NEA time! Trying to inspire them with some possible ideas. Have put together a list of inspiring Tweets. Lots of good ideas from
@kate_stockings
@Beal1957
and
@HannaG___
It may help others.
1/2 Inspired by something
@GeoBlogs
did last year, I have made this Google Slides presentation summing up key events so far this summer. It is editable & I would love others to add to it; more human geog & economic stories would be good. I will add to it too. Link in comments.
2024 and onwards with term two of my
@The_GA
Presidential Year. It is going so fast but I am learning so much. Advocating for geography is central to what I am doing, with my students leaders. Catch up with my adventures here.
Next stop Liverpool!
Just covered 4 figure grid references with my 9 year old daughter; she got it in two mins. Why does it take so much longer with year 7, each year?! Maybe the wine ๐ท helped my explanation.

Now, I know isolation booths are really controversial and
#banthebooths
is a big movement but I am wondering if anyone has 3 I could borrow, just whilst the schools are closed? 1 for each of my kids should do the trick...for meal times, afternoon times, breakfast time..... ๐๐คช๐
Bye Sheffield. Thanks to all at the
@The_GA

@sarahlarsen74

Well that is the end of day 1! Thanks so much to everyone for their support and kindness, particularly

Thank you to
@climateincolour
for an fascinating public lecture.
See you tomorrow for day 2!

Just climbing into bed, trying to talk to my husband about essential things, like my plans for tomorrow & he wants to talk about geography. He had found this very interesting & wanted to discuss it. We are now onto the weekend forecast & the jet stream! ๐ค
With no regard for security protocols & the future of the geographical leadership, the entire presidential team travel back to London together. Reckless ๐คฃ
No police escort, no private plane & no luggage assistance (I really need this), just a busy train and some marking ๐คฃ
Launching my geography advent calendar with year 11 this week, via Google Classroom. Aimed at revision/retrieval. I can't remember who shared this template with me a few years back but thank you, it is great! Will share my 'windows' each day. Link to docs in the chat.
Loved making waste footprints on Friday with year 7. We collected & sorted waste, then made footprints from the non-recyclable items. Thanks
@kate_stockings
for the idea. Think student A (letโs call her that) has set the gold standard! So impressed.
#geographyteacher
Very exciting, my first attempt to write a blog post....any thoughts on the activities or the questions posed at the end, are most welcome! Thanks
@Mrs_Geography
for this :)

An evening with the man who really should have been a geography teacher! I would love to know stats on the number of geographers in the audience. Thanks
@simon_reeve
for a great night.
Thanks
@GeogFox

@thisis_holly
for the company.
In March, for my GA session, I asked people to nominate their top IT Geog links. I have finally edited the list & uploaded it to share. Link in comments. May be good for summer term planning or to share with prospective NQTs/trainees. Will add to it.

This 3D relief model is 19 years old. I gave it a new set of labels to brighten it up today. I KNOW it is NOT technically accurate but it was made by some lovely year 7s...who are now 30 yrs old. Thatโs a scary thought. Itโs nailed to the wall....so it stays.

Trying to do my bit for the circular economy. I organised a local clothes swap event today in the village cafe. Pretty successful. People are keen to do it again! Would recommend it to others to try.

Over the last few yrs, I have bookmarked so many useful NEA ideas/articles for possible NEA titles but my bookmarks seem to only go back a year now? I had saved ideas from
@bobdigby

@Beal1957
among others. All gone๐Any new ideas welcome TIA
Excited to be presenting online at the

. We will be chatting about building a compassionate geographical community. Friday 9th April, 2021, 12pm! See you there!

What does a geographer do after a great
@The_GA
conference. Check out the postindustrial landscape of Manchester. Cheers
@sarahlarsen74

I have tens of thousands of photos that I keep and never get time to look at or use in my lessons...remembered this one tonight and managed to find it! Belfast 2010.

2/2 I plan to use it with my classes in the first week back. I donโt show them all the slides and go into different depths depending on age. The images are all hyperlinked to articles, some with videos. Worksheet available too.
Old staple in our department and I love it. Students plotting earthquake reports using their interpretations of the Mercalli Scale, refreshing map skills in Y8 tectonics

I used my sonโs sketch of the TRF, inspired by the

Came across this great population pyramid with year 10 today. Very interesting; they thought so too. Not seen one go off the side of the chart before?! Migrant labour being the main reason for the shape of the pyramid?

When you turn up at the bottle bank with your recycling (away camping at the moment. Hard times ๐) and find someone has dumped lots of National Geog magazine. Some from 1967. Husband not happy at the pile that we now have in the back of the car. Oops.

@Digimap4Schools
expert,
@thisis_holly
was the best training I have had for ages! Have wanted to use it for so long, finally got a chance. V good. Love the opportunity to compare historical maps.
Each yr I carry out an investigation into this issue (see pics) & use it as a way to introduce yr 12 to the Chi Squared test. I was going to share it as part of

I was just saying to my husband how fab it has been to meet so many lovely people through
#edutwitter
this year; prompted by some gr8t support from
@ploguey
and
@geogramblings
this week. I then checked & I had hit 1000 followers. A good 1st proper yr on here. Thanks all.
Loving the ideas from
@Jennnnnn_x
on making geography inclusive - ideas to help us hear stories from as many people as possible, in our classrooms. Very useful! Thanks!
Standing room only for an excellent session from
@gasigict
. Great to be hearing from
@lcgeography
on his GIS stories of lava flows! Now
@geogramblings
follows with a crowd sourced map! So much GIS. So many great maps. So many stories.
Really enjoyed our first
@The_GA
conference conversations session tonight - such an upbeat & uplifting end to the day. I started writing down quotes. There were too many. I will attempt a GA Blog! Thanks to everyone who supported the session. See you for round 2 on the 10th June.
For those setting assignments on Google Classroom, there is a 'reuse post' option. I didn't find this until recently. It can be a game changer if you have multiple classes doing the same thing or even just to provide a template for a post to them edit. Wanted to share...
Day 2 of my geography Advent calendar. Shared with my students via G Classroom. Thanks
@RGS_IBG
for the image in a recent Tweet. Behind our second window is a map.
Can you identify any patterns on the map?
Suggest two reasons for the differences in life expectancy shown.
Had a great afternoon with year 5 at a local primary school today taking part in school-based fieldwork. My year 12 geographical leaders were fantastic. Thank you so much to
@theislandgeogr
for your ideas and advice - it worked so well!

A great day in the sun along the Antrim coast. Some great NEA interviewing and fish and chips.
Quote of the day from a student, as her scarf blew off on the causeway โmy hijab isnโt hijabing!โ
Next stop, a film launch event!
A great day of Dorset fieldwork. So many things I have wanted to Tweet about as I walked along and I even considered a blog post earlier. However, I am exhausted now! Mini bus ๐ driving and lovely sunshine โ๏ธ , followed by a drenching โ๏ธ. Need to get to bed ๐!
Geographically themed home-learning for pre-school, KS1 and 2 today. A traffic count in our village. Quieter roads meant a more diverse range of vehicles were able to pass through! I have the sheets on my drive if anyone wants them.
#geographyteacher
Very pleased & excited to see this going live! Itโs going to be great. Get your proposals in. Keen to hear from people of all phases, levels of experience & areas of geographical interest. Thatโs what this conference is all about - geography for everyone!
