Today's first fish around 2lb. Yesterday's 4 hours were very good. 1st drift, one of 2 & half, next drift one just over 3. Pics on camera, will tweet them when back next week. Catching on wet flies today in hail storm. You can't beat Corrib.
No cages, no pellets, no lice, no antibiotics and no hype. Just taken 2 fillets of a 2lb wild Corrib / Mask brownie. Flesh colour is natural and I believe there is no finer eating fish. Albeit only an occasional luxury these days.
Big wind, big wave, a short -lining day on wet flies on The Mask. Likely the best of my dozen for the day. A healthy 3lb surely. Mr Coyne likely the best company and boat partner to be out with on a wild day.
I didn't know my hands could get so cold. Few hours up in Snowdonia today in a boat. Bloody freezing, no fly life but a dozen to the boat on intermediates. Not much prettier than a wild Welsh Brown trout from a pollution free Llyn.
Day 4 Irish spring. Summer yesterday, winter the day before, wild and squally spring day today back on Lough Corrib. 8 to the boat, this one 3lb in any currency. All caught on assorted size 12 olives in a big wave. My variant of Cyril's olive maybe best one. Great day.
Day 5 Irish spring. Mighty Mask again today. Wild wet and windy and as Beth Hart sang we were " caught out in the rain " almost a score to the boat, lots 11" to 13" harvesters but a handful of good ones too. No fly to be seen, no rises but they were still prepared to come.
Frost on the car this morning but really nice to get back on The Corrib again. No fly and very few trout sticking their head into the top layer but we managed to put a bend in the rods.
Mission accomplished, 170 order done. Last batch of 40 my choice. Most you'll know, maybe not the dirty olive palmered Invicta. That's it, I won't pester you with more random fur & feathers wrapped on hooks for a few days, I've run out of hooks.
Day 3 Irish spring, Lough Mask. Absolute flat calm till around 2.30. not perfect but once the breeze did arrive, a dozen to the boat before 5 o'clock. Darker trout here, not the stamp of Corrib but great sport when it happened.
First wee chuck of the season today off the bank, high in Snowdonia. 10.30 start and very cold and strong wind. Warmed up about noon and a few came up to play before I called it a day at 2pm. Even a double header all on the same fly, one point and one top dropper. Ross 👍
Was delighted to accept the invite to fish Llyn Conwy today with a local pro photographer. Fishing a Welsh mountain lake 1450 feet above sea level from a drifting boat with Snowden peeking over yer left shoulder - amazing. Plenty of nice trout too.
A nice wee order to tie, as requested, of old sea trout traditional wet flies heading north. Black Pennell, Dunkeld, Goat's Toe, Peter Ross, Teal Blue & Silver and Grouse & Claret.
There you go guys - today's dying art form in 100% fur and feather. For a longtime client heading to South Uist chasing a few sea trout in a couple of months. My traditionals, variants and bomber muddlers to his recipe. Just add a decent blow.!!
I never met her but I felt I knew her very well.
@caryshaf
Her blogs were always brave and inspiring and full of both honesty and wry humour - we'll miss that. She said she liked my sunset pics from West Wales so - in her memory. Thoughts with
@LeeEvansWales
and family tomorrow.
Wet mayflies with green tails the man said. So there you go, 90 now done on this order and still 80 to go. 20 dries for the Corrib and Mask risers next.
Never known Nant y Moch fish so well, 30 to 40 trout mostly 10"to 12'. Same flies as Conwy, Pretender, Leggy Pennell & Pearly Bibio ( bust rib ) My Canadian apprentice for the day, Annie had never caught so many trout. Lost a cracker at the net, pound + I know, I know - old story
I don't often put pics of flies up in the fishing season, but it was a nice wee diversion to quickly tie up these 12 Golden Olive Pretenders, requested urgently for Connemara. 6 with knotted red legs and 6 as standard. I guess the prototypes must have worked !!!
Batch of size 14s off the vice this morning - a serious test for my aged eyes and fingers. Part of a nice wee order though. Killarney Fly and unusual Kate dressing among them.
A fair old blow high up on Snowdonia today but another lovely few hours. This llyn must hold the prettiest and free rising wild brownies in Wales. The new flowering heather bells pic will give you an idea of what fly was working.
Quiet day on The Corrib today. Big wind/wave and a wet arse to boot. Lots of small harvesters to wet fly but a few good ones among them, including this very silvery one. Back to The Mask tomorrow.
No better way to put the brownie season to bed than guesting on a boat with good company on Llyn Gwyddior. Cold breeze but we tempted a few off the top on small wet flies. The banker Pretender and the Bo Diddley doing the damage. Best about two and a half pound.
Day 32 s/i - This morning I was asked by a good angling customer / friend from London to tie and put on Twitter copies of Kingsmill Moore's bumbles from the book ' A Man May Fish ' I have tied them from the dressings listed in the book - not the painted examples by Donald Downs
@Plaid_Cymru
Good God, as a serious alternative to Welsh Labour you've totally lost the plot. Start argueing for farmers and the countryside and creating some jobs of substance in Wales. Dear Oh dear.
Home safe and happy. A couple more shots from Irish trip. Playing a quality Corrib trout = just over 3lb. Lough Mask traditional lunch, starter Killary scallops washed down with Jamesons. Fishing buddies - one World Cup winner, one dual European winner and one National Champion.
Cold on top of the ' Desert of Wales ' today, tough fishing considering its early September but worthwhile. They don't come any wilder or prettier than these.
First day after the storm a lovely day to pick to be up on the Welsh hills. Some nice wild brown trout were happy to perform for the camera. Floating line and small flies gave all the sport. We're so lucky to have wild trout of this quality.
" Once upon a time in the West " Maybe, just maybe we'll get back to some proper fishing this year. A three and a half pounds Corrib trout, hooked on size 12 epoxy buzzer, played and netted for the camera.
T'was a tough old day on the hills today. Blew a hoodie from out of the devil's back yard. A day to be thankful for the quality of wild brown trout fishing we have - the odd bent rod only adds to the pleasure.
I suppose thats the problem with Angling in Wales - its always SO much more crowded than public transport, golf courses, garden centres, B&Q, Chippy takeaways, shops and garages. Oh, and you can never find a place to park the bike !!
@WGTransport
460,000 still want to know what was so dangerous during the decades before you introduced this 20mph bollocks that no one ever complained about.
Required next week - this morning's wee brown trout rushed order. The legs are in demand - coesau ( leggy ) Pennell, usual Pretender and a requested Claret Pretender variant. Be interested to hear how that one performs. I can't do any more ' quick ' orders - October earliest now.
Done, ready for the post. The last few wet flies of an order that'll hopefully get some wetting for the customer on a few of Ireland's great loughs this year.
Pics from a lumpy practise day on The Mask. That trout ran off most of his backing twice before snagging the bottom in shallow water. Twas bigger than the one of the lot I netted.
Just one of the pics from my new book - planned launch at
@irishflyfair
in November. Delighted with the superb book cover by Terence Lambert and Foreword by Owen Williams. Wildlife Artists supreme.
@Amanwy
@YsgolLlannon
What a sad excuse for a politician this person is. Come up to Aberystwyth and have a open public meeting and you want to know the mood of the electorate.
It had to be done but we shouldn't really be sitting in a boat fishing for brownies in this weather. Thankfully dries flies again today, Coch and same small dark olive from yesterday. Tough few hours but some nice trout.
Another 50 fly order ready to post. All tied to the customers own patterns - this guy catches a lot of Irish and Scottish wild trout. Pleasure to tie them up, albeit made a hole in my special golden olive JC cape. Shall I add that to the bill ??
There you go folks - anyone looking for a nice wee stocking-filler for the angler in yer life. I have 2 doz assorted boxes available, including mayflies, Irish wets and Welsh wild brownie selection. Box is included. Interested, DM for details, very reasonable I'm in Xmas mode.
Ireland here we come. On a mucky old day, batches of 12s and 14s to finally wrap up this wet fly order. Pretenders, Bo Diddleys and my Cock Robin variant to go with a few others.
Big water for the final day on the hill brownies. All safely returned till next year - though they did take an end of season liking to the White Arsed Kate. Lovely clean fish.
Day 6 Irish spring. Today the Lough won, no trout. Flat calm and wet day, very little fly and rising trout a rarity. Called it a day early afternoon. Heading to boat Inn now to wrap up the trip. A wee fat guy from yesterday to show the quality of these Loughs,roll on next trip. G
End of another order, last of the size 12s done. Dabblers, Hobblers, leggy Pennells and assorted Kate's. In the post Monday. The Tying rhythm is good at the moment and the background music.
A beautiful Autumn day, so at last minute I decided not to waste it and went and jumped in a boat. Good decision, had a few crackers. 2 lb+ in great nick and full of sedge pupa. Best of day pushing 6 lb and apart from one, they all took the Black Watch, size 12 on the point.
15th July, high summer on the Welsh mountains - bloody freezing, wet and dreich all day. Hope its warmer where the main man is. He'll need a Gwyddior on the cast if he fancies a few hours thrashing from the lee shore.
Lesson number 2 - well, when she wants to let loose every time she stops over. I'm sure her choice of colour is spot on, nowt to do with Barby dolls !!
They say the 1st step on a long journey is the toughest one, but given today's weather, we're off - a quick half hour at the vice - 6 tied - 200+ still to do on this winter's Irish orders. Slowly but surely.
A lot of mucky brown run off on the lake today after all the rain but find the clean water and you'll get a few nice fish. A nice blue, all of 4lb and been in there a very long time. They do like a Pretender - no blobs and boobies to fool these guys.
Got more Irish winners here than at Cheltenham this week I reckon 😉 Part of a wee order of wets that might just tempt a few wild brown trout on Irelands great western loughs in a month or so.
And on the 8th day he created ..... that's Snowdon over my right shoulder. Amazing sport today, some lovely mountain trout - very heavy coch y bonddu and cogyn hatches - the bucket full is from the belly of just one of the two going to the pot.
Hot, humid and sultry after rain, not really fishing weather but a couple of hours on the mountain this afternoon was needed to blow the tubes out. Had to work hard for the good ones. Better fish taking advantage of heavy run-in after the storm. 4 seasons in 4 hours.
My Full Metal Jacket for Corrib duckfly early season covering all water levels. Buzzers 12s if they're down -, Emergers and Hutch's Pennells 14s and 16s if they're fussy in the top layers and dries on 14s maybe 16s for the near flats.
I think credit where its due. We hear so much about the mess left by ' users ' of the countryside and the mountains. 12 Off Roads camped overnight at Teffi Pools on Friday night. Not even a speck of anything left when they left Saturday. We're all in it together - good craic too.
Peter Ross, a shop keeper from Killin in Perthshire, The other end of Loch Tay from me. Wonder what he'd think of his original fly dressed up dabbler style.
First day on Craig Goch for a while, a few good fish mostly to The Pretender but am becoming seriously worried about the water. Great rafts of clogging weed in many areas, worse than last season are restricting the bank fishing. I'd say phosphates etc but Im no expert !!
Done, part of batch of assorted 80 of last Spring's successfu random fur and feather thrown at hooks. Over the water to try and tempt some wild trout in the West. That wee batch of size 14s were a bit of a guddle for my aged eyes.
A few of this year's successful patterns for me on the Welsh hill waters chasing wild brownies, before one final trip to close a very unnatural yet productive season. Plus, anyone buying my latest book between now and Xmas will receive a free cast of 3 wet flies with each copy
Plenty of these today. Fat as little pigs. A very fertile, unadulterated wild brownie water and big hatch of cogyn, beetles plus leeches and the odd newt. Will put more up later.
Going fishing is not always about catching trout. The history of the Monastic sites on Lough Corrib's Inchagoill Island date back a thousand years / some even 6th century. Amazing place, tombs, carved stones and wall carvings. slow fishing days do have many positives.
First few hours on the Pools this year. blowing a real hoolie, lot of dirty water but a few fish in the sheltered bay. All a bit lean yet, no fly life but nice to see the bog cotton well in bloom. Spoke to angler who tells me 4"snakes are the best fly for 12" wild browns. Help !!
New special edition colours in the post today from
@VicunaDubbing
- had a wee play with them - Mist and Rain and Fiery Brown Bumble. Baby seal's fur is no longer available to fly tyers - this fine Alpaca dub fills the gap perfectly on small flies. Soft coloured natural blends !!
Amazing few hours on Gamallt today.
@GethinJones123
and
@DyffrynClwyd
- you lads need to get back up there pronto. Big hatch of Olives, they wouldn't look at wet flies but a dozen were happy to snaffle size 14 dry dark olives on both lakes. 4 hours fishing.
Given the current sad state of the nation - is it acceptable and politically correct to continue referring to these as Brownies when we write magazine features ?? Asking for a few friends
Not the biggest of mountain trout, best about 12 inches and a couple of double headers during a few hours this afternoon doing some reece. 20 odd landed, as many more missed. One half of the lake mucky, the other half where the fish were is clean, lake very low good fishing level
It's usually the little ones that show first. Size 14 FM grub hooks and a wee touch of nice soft
@VicunaDubbing
in there too. Will report results by end of week.
@natasghar
@WelshConserv
Can they tell us please what was so wrong before 20mph was set. None of the 450,000 who signed the petition had any problems complying to the old limits at schools, hospitals etc - are WG are telling us all petioners were Tory voters ? If so Labour are in trouble next election
First 20 of a 100 order heading as far north as mainland Scotland allows. Some real old warriors asked for - KeHe, Blue Zulu, Loch Ordie, Kate and Camasunary Killer. Some fishing history there and nice see that the old ones still seem to work. 10s and 12s
@WalesOnline
Not one of the 450,000 people who signed the petition had any gripe about the old system. Happy outside schools, hospitals and 100% housing estates. The new nonsense on major A trunk roads and non built up areas is pointless. Agh well, back in the Welsh cotton wool box !!
Carnival time at the vice - not my normal sombre offerings but a few Gorgeous Georges tied up as per the customer's two samples received in the post. I wonder ??
I guess we all have a wee fly we wish we had created, J R Harris's Orange Pupa is mine. It's caught me lots of Corrib duckfly feeding trout over the years. Was inspired to tie up a few after finishing 130 quill buzzer order for the main man on Corrib. They're all he ever wants ??
Panic over in the West of Ireland I hope - job done. Ordered at 10am - tied and in the posted by 3pm, hopefully he'll have them before the weekend. I guess the ( Smell No Taste ) = SNOT fly, must be taking a few at the moment..
Been sorting some pics for inclusion in the next book - almost 5 lb. I'm still looking for a few unusual or forgotten traditional wet flies patterns and their history - preferably from the wilder Celtic regions. Please DM any possibles !!
