holiday homes on Arran are filling up before our eyes. Why on earth are they still being allowed on the ferries? Youโre putting us all at risk when other ferry routes are apparently being tougher. Stop failing us.
Seems like a good time to bring this back: CalMac routes served by vessels over 25 years old (CalMac's own goal for vessel lifespan).

Gaelic and Scots should have the same recognition and profile, no questions.
It took Gaelic decades to get where we are today. Scots language folk need to fight for it too. Getting annoyed at Gaelic for what it has helps no one. The languages face shared *and* different hurdles
This is so disappointing as it undermines the good work and allyship that I've seen and experienced from the
@UNISON_UofG
branch. But if that's not supported nationally, why stay in an organisation that's toxic at the top
As of tonight, here's all the routes affected by breakdown of regular vessel, no sailings due to extended overhaul of regular vessel, or having a smaller vessel due to extended overhaul of regular vessel.
Eagle-eyed viewers will note that almost *every major route* is affected
Scottish parties as ferries:
SNP: Loch Seaforth (unstoppable but uncomfortable)
Tories: Isle of Mull (tired and unmanoeuvrable)
Lab: Isle of Arran (so old it could be dead)
LD: Loch Bhrusda (loud but fairly insignificant)
Greens: Carvoria (powered by an outboard and wishes)

Gaelicโs presence on Duolingo is of course a very welcome step in making the language accessible and more modern. But if you think a) itโs a way to fully learn Gaelic or b) that pointing to Duolingo is an effective argument against concerns about community usage, youโre wrong.
But what confidence can I have that concerns of and support for my trans comrades won't be totally undermined by the union at a national level, regardless of the support from my local branch? Shameful from
@unisonscot
I really think Ayrshire is under appreciated. Some of the richest history in Scotland, strong linguistic identity, and absolutely beautiful, diverse scenery
That statement from the new UHI boss is shocking. What is a 'vanity' course? Gaelic courses? Cultural courses? Drama and the arts? Forestry and agriculture? Basically anything in vocational studies and the arts?
Universities aren't for boosting the economy; they're for learning.

Given the amount of โdonโt be nasty to the tourists, we depend on themโ chat Iโm seeing from those with second homes and in the tourism industry, maybe now would be a good time to acknowledge that island economies could do with creating more non-tourism jobs...
Tormod, our wee ginger cat, has been missing since March and we assumed gone feral or worse. But today I heard from a friend in High Corrie, *two miles away* who had had a ginger cat with them since last night. Guess who is now home!!
The people in my village on Arran were given no choice but to leave. The land they were sent to in Canada was barren. The island population has never recovered. Take this revisionist bullshit and piss right off

My grandparents probably lived in a small thatched cottage with multiple siblings, no running water and a bucket for a toilet. Their descendants are doing well, living on 3 continents. Thank you for deserting your shack. Clearances are romantic twaddle.
Scenes like this arenโt โwildโ, they are just places that were until recently worked and inhabited, and are still sheep farms.
Youโd have to go back a *long* way to when they were โwildโ rather than working, living communities. Stop airbrushing people from history.

Once again for the central belters up the back, life in the Highlands and Islands extends beyond your summer camping trip to Loch Lomond and some people have to rely on roads that urgently need improvement in areas where a train line will never be a realistic alternative
Some of you may remember my cat Tormod, who went missing in March 2021, came home for two weeks in October 2021, then took off up the moor again above Sannox. Well look who's back...

has been hammering home the โdonโt come just nowโ message for Argyll & Bute. Arran and many other places need someone to do the same for us.
As IF Iโve just seen someone on an Arran online forum asking if holiday home owners are entitled to a council tax rebate because they havenโt been able to use their houses! How about not owning holiday homes you GREEDY. SELFISH. BASTARDS.
This gets to the heart of the matter: loss of tourism income is one thing, but this is the bigger problem: unreliable ferry services threaten the sustainability of island communities
The year is 2143. Arran, as David Icke predicted, has sunk. Gaelic has replaced English as the main language of Scotland. The A9 is yet to be dualled.

Thereโs a holiday home filled up along the road from me. Thereโs several in the village down the road. Thereโs more filling today. Village stores and the Co-op are already struggling to cope just with local orders. These tourists will kill people.

So, to round up the current Arran ferry crisis: the main vessel, MV Caledonian Isles, suffered a port engine failure and struck the breakwater on entering Ardrossan Harbour. She has now been withdrawn from service for an unspecified period, and towed to Troon for repairs... (1)

Maybe if the Highlands & Islands hadnโt become so reliant on tourism and actually had received some investment in housing, infrastructure and direct business investment to create a sustainable economy the downturn wouldnโt have been as bad?
Really can't put into words how disappointed I am to see folk like Hannah Bardell, who I thought were among the few good folk remaining in the SNP, along with so many of the remaining LGBTQ+ SNP fan guys, lapping up the ascension of Kate Forbes in their twitter likes and RTs
