The Fed can hike interest rates all it wants, it's not going to make it rain in Brazil, open ports in China, find truck drivers in the UK, change covid-0 policies in Australia. Bet that the Fed will hike rates if you want, but don't bet it will help this supply-driven inflation.

This is the biggest difference between the Canadian and US housing market in my eyes. In the US, income and house prices have moved more or less in line. In Canada... oof, the chart is painful. (Another great chart set from Doyle at Macquarie)

I'm old enough to remember 10 days ago when Chair Powell said one reason they hiked 75bps was because U of Mich 5-10yr inflation expectations jumped from 3.0% to 3.3% and then, today, that same figure was revised downward to 3.1%. It never was 3.3% after all.

Your regular reminder that most economic data is reported to us in nominal terms & when you're in periods of high inflation, what people pay at the checkout will look very different than how much they are taking home. "Real" data that looks at volumes of activity look much worse

I'll keep saying it: we are moving from COVID inflation to CONFLICT inflation. Conflict inflation is going to be lower in headline going forward, but more painful for growth. You could sub out of used cars, home renos, fitness equipment. You can't sub out of food and energy.

Federal government delivers massive investment in early learning and childcare -- critical economic and social infrastructure. It is good for children, parents, economy and society. Over the next decade, it will raise government revenues by more than the cost of the investment.

When i talk about an economic second wave, this is what I'm referring to. Note the inequality component of the story too. (Applicable in Canada and the US).👇

I asked @francesdonald about long-term challenges in recovering jobs. Her quote is a) too perfect to cut, so b) I'm sharing it in full here.

.⁦ @BNNBloomberg ⁩ booked two (v. qualified) women in their 30s to represent the CDN CEO/business leaders perspective (⁦ @nicoleverkindt ⁩ ) and the Bay Street/markets reaction to the budget. I have been thinking all day how big of a deal that is /1

Which means 61% of jobs in Canada can NOT be converted to “work from home”. I keep hearing about how WFH is going to radically transform our economies. Some additional WFH will have implications but this is no paradigm shift. And the convo leaves the bulk of workers behind.

It’s my birthday today! As a gift, reply with the asset you feel is *most* mispriced - feel free to go as traditional or NONtraditional as you want. Use any definition of mispriced you want. Ill go first. I have two.1) the price of so-called « unskilled » labor and 2) real rates

Yes, the Bank of Canada like many central banks should be normalizing rates. But a 25bps (or 50) hike will create a larger growth drag in Canada than many other econs in part because of charts like this (via Macquarie). That puts CDN at relative bigger risk of policy mistake.

Canada's personal savings rate is near its lowest in data history: 1.1%. That's not a lot of cushion left to absorb any shock should it arise... (yah, that's a deliberately ominous ellipsis)
