Women's Soccer Coach at Saint Mary's University.
I have a real tricky time hearing folks that don’t believe in themselves.

*Referee makes a terrible call during a game*
My brain:
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Don't say it
Me: SIR!!!!!!
A few things I have learned talking to parents at college showcases:
1. D3 schools apparently have athletic scholarships now
2. D1 schools definitely have to have more than 14 scholarships b/c the amount of players going full ride is crazy
3. Most things are the coach's fault
My favorite part of this interview with Rose Lavelle. Scores winning goal to help US win CONCACAF. Asked how it feels to get to take part in her first World Cup.
She replies, "I mean I still have to make the roster."
Elite mentality. Nothing is deserved or given, it is earned.
Love this. I wasn't allowed to switch club teams, wasn't allowed to quit. I remember saying to my mom, "this coach just doesn't like me." My mom replied, "well, then make him like you."
To all the teams out there.
Be the team on campus that is always saying hi to other coaches, employees, professors, thanking the maintenance staff.
Be the team that goes to other sporting events and cheers your heart out for your classmates.
That stuff goes a long way.
If this past year of getting new jobs, moving, getting married wasn't enough, Kelly and I also decided to add one more commit to our class of 2022!
May 2022 ❤❤❤
One of my players was particularly energetic and talkative today who is normally quiet.
I asked her why the change.
She said, "Well, I ate peanut butter before practice today, so that might be it."
And now, I literally understand nothing about my players anymore.
Unfortunately couldn't join all my buddies at United Soccer Coaches Convention this week.
Had this little guy join us today!
Welcome to the world, Wittman Nicholas Rizzo
This truly is such an amazing place for Kelly and I to start our life together. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with the
@WSoccerSMUMN
and be at Saint Mary's!
I am going to miss my
@ScotsWSoccer
team so, so much.
But I am excited for this next adventure!
One main piece of advice I would give all players looking to play is don't have a preconceived idea of what position you will play when you get to the college game.
Show up as a player. Work hard/compete every day. Give yourself as many avenues to get on the field as possible.
It's always fun to look back and see how we initially found the players for each recruiting class.
This is how we found the class of 2022.
For all the players out there, there are so,so many ways to be seen!
You don't have to follow the same path as anyone else, find yours!
Players like this are going to go far in life.
The times that both coaches and players get "ghosted" by the other are way too many.
A message goes a long way.
Also, handwritten notes are the absolute best and coaches love getting them too!
The worst text to get from a player is "Hey Coach, can we talk?"
The following conversation could anything from I got a new puppy and want to show you a picture to I am leaving the team.
My heart races every time
I love going to soccer tournaments these days and seeing 8 year old kids with $200 shoes when my mom was still having me rock the shin guards with ankle guards attached to them at that age.
Today made it 3 years for me at Monmouth with our amazing women's soccer team.
Such an awesome group that I'm excited to be a part of every day.
Thankful that Monmouth took a chance on me 3 years ago today.
Here's to another great year!
I wanted to share a text I received from a player on a team that we played in the conference tournament last week.
The soccer community NEEDS more players like this.
It is the beautiful game, and we can BATTLE but still have the utmost respect for one another.
@MWCSports
Just spoke with a recruit that I apparently coached at a camp when she was 13 years old. She remembered me because I referred to myself in the 3rd person all camp as "Rizzo fo Shizzo."
I am not sure how I feel about her coming and telling the rest of our team about that.
Two players walk into my office, looking all serious.
"Coach, can we talk to you about something?"
"Oh no, what's up?"
"Welllllll, we're gonna need you to mix up the Instagram filters you're using. You make us look orange."
"Oh dear God."
If you ever want to see the definition of STUDENT-athlete, just take an away trip with a D3 women's college soccer team.
Nearly every player working on assignments with plenty of upperclassmen helping freshman in some of their new classes.
Love to see it.
Had to say good bye to my
@scotswsoccer
team for the last time today. That was rough.
One of the players in her note ended with the quote, "Thanks for the adventure, now go have a new one" from Up.
God I'm gonna miss these guys.
This video shows what our team is about. 0-0 game. Our captain forgets she is wearing a pinnie. Her teammates make fun of her. She laughs. Goes to the wrong side of the field. Teammates make fun of her again. Laughs.
Scores 2 goals in the next 7 minutes.
Soccer should be fun.
To all the D3 soccer family out there, good luck to start your seasons!
Stay healthy, have fun, score lots of goals(or keep them out if that's more your thing)
Should be a fun year!
Had an individual player meeting today and didn't talk about soccer and instead we took a quiz to sort us into Hogwarts houses. We were both Hufflepuffs which explains exactly why that meeting went that way.
If anyone ever needs a reminder that college athletes are still kids, the players behind me on the bus have now been playing "I spy with my little eye" for the last 20 minutes and one of them just goes, "No, it's my turn!"
When you accidentally say "Let's go boys" during an intense moment of a match(been watching too much Liverpool) while coaching your college women's team.
Players never forget anything.
Talked to a coach about a player I liked today. The coach then asked, "Do you have any other questions about her?"
- "Is she a good teammate?"
Fortunately, the answer was yes. But players definitely need to know that this question will be asked by nearly every college coach.
This man was such a great coach and mentor to me.
You should pick a college that 10 years down the road that you would no questions asked pick again. That is me and
@LorasMSoccer
.
Thank you Coach Rothert for all that you did for me and all my teammates!
The more I watch soccer recently, the more I realize how important your midfield is to making your defense's job easier.
You can have the best defenders in the world, but if the forwards they are dealing with are getting constant service, they'll be in trouble a lot.
"Call it both ways!!!" is one of my favorite phrases I hear parents yell at soccer games.
Sometimes....and hear me out on this.
One team is actually just committing WAY more fouls than the other team.
As a person who both played D3 and now coaches D3, this is very disappointing.
D3 sports matter and the quality of the championships matter.
Maybe there is a good reason why this doesn't work for the NCAA, and I'd love to hear it.
But this is not a good look.
The NCAA has sent a letter denying an urgent request from United Soccer Coaches to change the NCAA Division III men's and women's soccer championships.

At US CLUB regionals.
A coach in his U17 game.
"You are so soft and out of position, it's embarrassing."
Sir, respectfully there is only one embarrassing person here and it's not her.
Went to Far West and Midwest regionals last week.
Limited profile books. Happens. Done complaining about that.
Emailed 25 different coaches/managers. Gave specific player numbers and positions last Tuesday.
A week later, I heard back from 3 of them.
What are we doing here?
We literally talk about this every day it seems at our program.
Any CB on our team would tell you. No pressure on the ball=cue to drop and get narrow.
How he is doing it at level is ridiculous.
My fiance is so into this soccer life that she asked for my CBS+ password so she can watch the
@chiredstarsPR
game when I am not there.
Her training is complete.
Our theme all year was BELIEVE.
This group set out this season to make Saint Mary's a team that nobody wants to play against.
Even in the semi, to go down 3-0, fight back to 3-2, hit 2 crossbars, and outshoot 20-3 in the 2nd half.
This team did what we asked and BELIEVED.
Also, the kid might *gasp* want to go play at a D3 school.
Don't narrow out options for kids. Encourage them to visit schools and teams at all levels.
The best fit for them may come from a school they don't expect.
It should be mandatory that every high school coach must go to at least 1 live college game at each level
The amount of disrespect from some high school coaches I’ve had is unbelievable
Please explain how ur guy is “too good” for D3, w no interest in March of his senior year
75% of the interactions that I have with players on my team is me making fun of them, or them making fun of me. The other 25% is me trying to make them do soccer/school stuff.
I'm not sure this is a great balance.
This is not fun news for anyone, but I understand why this is needed.
Excited to get back to training/games when we are able. We have such an amazing group that will be so fun to coach!
Wear a mask. Social distance. So no one else gets sick and no more seasons are postponed.
Was doing the sandwich method with a player that to show them how to improve something.
The "say something positive, correct the mistake, then say something positive to finish."
The player responded, "you don't have to patronize me Rizzo. Just tell me what I need to fix." Ha
My favorite photo in a while. The forward hugging the forward that needed to step in for her because of an injury and scored the game winner.
#RollScots
That time I met Jill Ellis and she told me she wasn't smiling for the picture so I didn't. She lied.
And I looked dumb in front of a 2x World Cup champ.
I know every coach in our conference really well, and would bet anything they don't do that.
The times I have heard a recruit say that an opposing coach had said really nice things about our program and myself is too many to count.
We will get recruits doing it the right way.
Coaches, you’re a fool if you think other schools, (especially in your conference), are not bashing your program to recruits you’re competing for.
Winning starts with recruiting and if you’re not winning that battle good luck in the war. You’re going to need it.

Being a college coach is having all your freshman come in to your office looking serious so you think they all got in trouble.
And instead they get you a bunch of new clothes for the baby.
Just a heads up to the
@MonmouthCollege
community if I obnoxiously say hi to you and you don't have any clue who I am, I am sorry.
I haven't figured out what each of the players on our team looks like with a mask on yet, and may have mistaken you for someone...
Our family finally decided that we would wear sweats for Christmas.
I have spent the last many years of my life trying to use a combination of Inception and Pavlov to make this happen.
My work here is done.
Was getting fitted for a suit yesterday for my buddy's wedding, and the lady doing the fitting asked me if I was planning on putting on any muscle before the wedding.
1st of all, ouch and what are you trying to say.
2nd of all, no most likely not.
Even at small tournaments, Club coaches and team managers, please bring profile books because even though there's only 4 of us here recruitiing today, we would still like to recruit your kids!
Players are moving out, and a few stopped by while I wasn't there(social distancing), and a few left me notes.
The last 2
"Coach, I stole one of your soccer balls, thanks!"
"You need to replace your hand sanitizer"
They're such a great group...
Today my diet consisted of:
A $5 foot long from subway
10 piece chicken mcnugget meal from McDonald's
Hyvee Chinese
A bag of reese's pieces
And 5 coffees
Because that is what a fully functioning adult eats(probably).
People can say all they want about their style of play, subbing, etc, but UNC Women's Soccer's ability to get to the College Cup every year is pretty crazy
Hey all! At Saint Mary's, we are still looking for players in both our 2021 and 2022 recruiting classes and would love to connect with anyone interested!
You can email me at nrizzo

I love talking with club/HS coaches that I trust about about their players that we're recruiting.
They'll see how these kids play and how they act more in 2 weeks than I may get in an entire recruiting cycle.
The good coaches out there matter.
Coaches, remember that as much as you are watching your players, they are watching you!
Be the person that you would like them all to be.
Water seeks its own level.
@Tactical_Times
Personally thought Gravenberch struggled today but super happy he got his goal.
He has so much promise but feels like he is still figuring things out.
Sucks that Klopp is leaving because it feels like Klopp was the man to get his career going again.
Creating soccer sessions where you always have 10 players, they are always the same 10 players, they are a mix of every position including goalkeeper, and they are NOT allowed to touch each other has been a very fun challenge this past month. It is also the bane of my existence.
It's been a weird year transitioning to a new job in the middle of COVID.
I have not known these seniors more than 6 months, but they have made a huge impact on my life.
#RollCards
I know my happiness should not be tied to this, but when we have practices like tonight where the players were just incredible with their quality of play, energy and communication, I leave the office with the biggest smile on my face.
