I hope everyone on here talking about "occupying private property is wrong and the police response is warranted" realizes that they're publicly admitting they would have opposed the Civil Rights Movement
@queenie4rmnola
Black soldiers signed up by the thousands to help the US Government displace and exterminate Western tribes, when that same government enslaved them up until three years prior. We may not have been the masterminds, but we absolutely participated.
@queenie4rmnola
Setting aside that not all of them did: invading their homes, murdering them by the thousands and stealing their lands as part of an imperial invasion force is still colonialism lol
@El_Daverino
@abeconnally
I'm not really sure why that would have been different, but if it makes you feel better the students at my institution began their sit-ins by walking in normally during the day.
@Komaniecki_R
I also think part of it is that liberals spend every election cycle trying to bully leftists into compliance through sheer condescension, whereas conservatives don’t expect or want our support and therefore do not bother us
Audience should not participate in music-making at a show unless specifically asked to. Especially non-musicians. Don’t clap along. Don’t stomp along. I didn’t come here to hear you pretend you know where the beat is
I have nothing bad to say about Luke Combs, and have heard only wonderful things about him. Because of systemic biases at play that are not his fault, I worry that we’re watching a legacy being overwritten in real-time. I’m thinking of Big Mama Thornton as I type this.
About to go talk about protecting queer and trans kids at a bluegrass festival in a Florida casino, wish me luck. And by that I mean pray I don’t get hate crimed
@Gockomo
@AkilahObviously
You don't see how divesting from companies that manufacture weapons and sell them to the IDF would help the situation in Palestine?
Hi from the International Bluegrass Music Association, where a 17 year old fiddler just explained the need for anti-racist fiddle tunes during the introduction for his original tune: "Goodbye, Columbus." The kids aren't just alright, they're better than us.
@IBJIYONGI
My reaction: you can convince me to do things out of fear up to a certain point, but I can't respect myself if I let someone scare me into complicity with genocide. Could I look a Palestinian in the face right now and explain that I voted for him to keep my own life comfortable?
It’s a moment of low morale for Black, brown and anti-racist Nashville peeps. Hate to see great artists openly contemplating throwing in the towel because one single ass-backwards southern town refuses to cooperate. Here’s a reminder: you don’t have to be in Nashville.
You can play a fiddle tune with a five-note melody and zero chord changes, and some boomer will be like “see, this has so much more depth than pop music.” No it does not
I’m playing the same festival as
@lizzo
this week and I’m just saying, my queer Afrofuturist folk music could use a ripping flute solo or two. I’m just putting that out into the universe
@reluctantlyjoe
The fact that people react to a mass casualty event by reasserting the importance of “pleasures” they could easily do without is why we are in this situation. Turns out taking care of others and existing in community means not getting everything you want 24/7
@tparsi
really looking forward to round two of "Democrats insist on a candidate who consistently loses in the polls, then blame everyone but themselves when the election goes the way it was obviously going to"
I would hate for people to not remember Tracy Chapman, who was probably the first LGBTQ voice I ever heard - certainly the first Black LGBTQ folk musician I ever heard, and I wouldn’t be where I am without her. But maybe I’m just being protective because she’s important to me.
Heartbroken to hear of the passing of Patrick Haggerty, creator of Lavender Country, the first queer country album. Patrick was an elder and a musical hero to my generation of queer country artists - and special to me because he was a relative of my family through marriage.
I have no strong opinions about Zimmer or Robert’s take here, but am perplexed by the replies expressing shock that various rock and folk musicians can’t read notation. Do classical musicians still not understand that their notation frequently doesn’t work for other styles?
I didn't imply shit, I said that with my whole chest. If you're okay with a guy yelling the n-word in the street and giving nothing but false promises and platitudes by way of apology (he never made the donations he promised), you have some unpacking to do.
I have been a professional musician for years. I’m doing just fine. I learned to read sheet music in my first college theory class, and I have to relearn every two to three years because that’s how rarely I use it. I don’t know anybody outside classical who uses it regularly.
Hey y'all I made a TikTok about Lady Antebellum sabotaging Black women's careers, share if you like and go buy/stream music from

About eight years ago, I learned this fiddle tune - “Dangerfield” - from Eddie Bond. He said it was named for one of the raiders who fought with John Brown. Today I played at John Brown’s burial site. Turns out Dangerfield Newby is buried there, too - and he was Black!

I think the point is that most ethnic minorities in the world do not have ethnostates and that the brutality of the ethnostates that DO exist should be proof of why they’re not good to have around.
Black History Month, and today I visited a very important place! Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her mother, Katie Bell Nubin, played their first shows in this building. Mahalia Jackson came here to hear the Pentecostals sing. Decades later, this building hosted Emmett Till’s funeral.
Janis Ian asked me to sing At Seventeen for her at the International Folk Music Awards tonight. I did an ok job because I was a hair’s breadth from tears the whole time but she stood up and clapped for me and really that’s what matters.
@Komaniecki_R
Libs tend to pander to conservatives and appease them in the hope of winning them over, while constantly flipping the bird to the left and expecting their support regardless.
The memes about the submarine were due to 1) the novelty of the predicament, 2) the poor judgment required to end up in said predicament, and 3) the passengers belonging to a social class renowned for thinking they’re more intelligent and worthy than every other human alive
It’s like heaven. I am prohibited by law from letting anyone bother me on the phone, no one can see or hear me, and I have a world of music and audiobooks at my fingertips. I understand driving is horrible for the earth but it may be the single best thing about modern life
I drove alone for 8h yesterday. It’s like torture. You can’t talk to anyone, browse Wikipedia, read your texts. Just constant low-grade activity in silence to avoid certain death.
ANNOUNCING: “The New Faith,” coming September 23 on the

African American Legacy Series.
@allsongs
just premiered the first single, “Didn’t It Rain.” Listen to the single and pre-order the record here:
As a man, other man frequently reveal to me how little they respect the women in their life. They expect me to sympathize because we are both men. To these men I say: I am not on your team, I dislike you, and I hope she dumps you.
In 2024, I would like for music academics to stop describing the process of making sound using the word “sounding.” It does not mean what you think it means
With the help of many insightful friends and mentors, and thanks to the efforts of Pop Pop, Gran Gran and my parents, I have been admitted to Brown University as a PhD student in Musicology & Ethnomusicology! I am so grateful, and truly cannot wait to get to work.
@NellSco
You didn't say "Kentucky legislators," you said Kentucky. You were addressing everybody who lives in Kentucky, including the loved ones of the people that died. If that wasn't meant to do, by all means apologize - but nobody is twisting anything. We can only go on what you wrote.
A lot of y’all don’t seem to get how much damage it does when people presume the accuracy and effectiveness of written notation. It does not include the right types of information for all styles. It warps, mangles and misrepresents like no other medium I have encountered.
I stopped in to give Pop Pop some big news a bit ago. This man is 97! When he was young, he wanted to be a dentist. But a falling tree crushed his father’s leg during his first year of college, and someone had to help out on the farm. Pop Pop became a farmer.
I spent SO LONG thinking that I would never have queer fans bc of the music I make. And every time a person with a rainbow flag in their bio or name follows me I still get so excited 😭
Ok deeply confusing moment: just walked past a lady who was standing on the left side of the escalator. A faux pas, but no biggie as the other half was free. I walked past her and she went “oh, excuse you! Rude!!” Are we not supposed to walk on escalators now??
.
@AmericanaFest
as a queer artist who has showcased in the past and hopes to do so again, I’d appreciate a statement. I need to know if and how you intend to stand with my community. I know you may not be able to speak on everything publicly, but the silence doesn’t feel good.
These situations are not a 1:1 comparison, because Tracy is getting paid and is likely happy with those checks! But as someone who dedicates his life to learning from recorded ancestors and telling their stories, it upsets me just as much that Thornton’s legacy has been obscured.
Tried to talk about current events at my show last night and wound up spinning out and saying “God would be disgusted with us” to a room of mostly Republican AARP members, so that’s how it’s going over here
@cancelcnclcltr
@lizzo
I think she’s a better judge than you of whether her own lyric is too important to change. Musicians change lyrics all the time, often for smaller reasons than this. Let her do what she wants.
Sold out shows are great. Encores are great. Sold out shows with three encores where someone tips you $500? Got one under my belt as of tonight, and yeah it was good
Having just broken up with a partner of four years, I think having my divorce reported on by journalists and commented on publicly by people who have never met me seems like a nightmare. But that’s just me!!!!
I love going to aggrieved luthiers. Bc you’ll walk in like “I think a seam might be open??” And they’re like “open? More like the fucking Grand Canyon. Ain’t a bit of glue on this thing. I should fucking kill you”
Pete Seeger got blackballed by the federal government and interrogated by Congress, and people really expect me to close my mouth because I might lose some gigs lol
If you don’t hear the true message behind a southern white man promising to murder ~urban people~ in an act of vigilante justice, you aren’t listening. Aldean’s new song is a lynching fantasy. The lyrics read like a manifesto by J. W. Milam and Roy Bryant.
How ignorant must one be to argue that holding a white artist accountable for yelling slurs is "cancel culture?" Billie Holiday was hunted for decades by feds and framed and arrested for possession ON HER DEATHBED for Strange Fruit. Sam Cooke DIED for A Change is Gonna Come. 1/2
We love to see institutions recognizing Black intellect, Black skill, Black talent, Black vision, Black excellence - and
@RhiannonGiddens
is all of that. Congratulations on another well-earned triumph.
Stellar passive-aggressive note left on my car by a homeowner telling me that I’m discourteous for parking in a legal space on a public street. I decided to reply in the local dialect
Hearing a lot of “industry plant” outrage from people who’ve spent the past several months singing the praises of an artist who was manufactured from thin air by her label, right as her father ~coincidentally~ purchased a $300,000 share. I don’t get it.
