You can do really good ministry and not grow a church. You can write a really good book and not sell a lot of copies. Everything we do must have value in the doing, not in the monetizing or crowds. Some crowds are great, some are not. It's all a bit more complicated.

I’m all for mental health advocacy but we often don’t talk about how difficult it is to find and pay for good mental health care. Good counseling and psychiatric care are often far more dependent upon privilege than we are willing to address.

Regardless of our views on abortion, realize that there are women in our churches who've had an abortion. When we call people baby killers, we're often speaking of the people we pray & fellowship with. How we talk about the people we love says a lot about our love. Grace to you.

The first Psalm warns me not to sit in the seat of scoffers. A word search of "scoffer" shows me that scoffers are not teachable, they try to harm you if corrected, they rage when confronted, they are led by their own passions & they are reluctant to follow the Spirit's leading.

When I was a child, the last stop on my mom's shopping spree was the fabric store, the most boring place on the planet. I learned the concept of endless time at the fabric store. There weren't even clothing racks to hide in. The suffering had no redemptive purpose but this tweet.

Pastoring will chew up and spit out people who are emotionally sensitive. Consequently, the pastors who remain are sometimes not that sensitive. Don't really know how to fix this but it is a real issue....in my opinion.

My 13-year-old son Sam, just made us all go outside, look at creation, look at our house and cars, thank God for what he has given us, take a deep breath and embrace each other. He embodies hope for me on a daily basis.

If you have relationship with someone who refuses to apologize or admit to his/her own mistakes, he/she will eventually reject you for not being enough. When people cannot look at their own side of the equation, they will repeatedly blame and reject anyone but themselves.

I personally believe that if a majority of your denomination's pastors are leading churches under 200 people, then the majority of your leadership should be pastors of churches of 200 people or less. Letting the anomalies or exceptions run the show, says much about our values.

As a pastor I’ve seen this sad truth play out too often. Someone can be well respected by 99.9 percent of the people they know and still do monstrously evil things to one person. Evil is not balanced out by a crowd of people willing to praise you.

Yesterday I officiated the funeral of my cousin George. He was 45 when he died. The brakes on his semi failed & he died trying to stop his runaway truck. Life's short, don't wait for tomorrow to reconcile. Spend time with your loved ones when you can. Say what needs said.

Some people are trying to survive, to hold onto their marriage, to keep their kid from overdosing, to pay enough to have a place to live. Sometimes luxury allows us to pursue righteous crusades. Be gracious when others don’t join us. Their crusade might simply be not giving up.

I would avoid any church run by an arrogant pastor. Arrogant pastors erroneously defend their arrogance as an expression of authority or strong leadership. The fruit of such churches is usually abusive. Arrogance is an anti-Christ spirit that resists the fruit of the Spirit.

There was that nursery worker who really loved you, who held you and made you laugh while the pastor preached too long and your parents slowly came to get you after service. She is worthy of honor.

I recently saw a negative tweet about public schools & it allowed me to unfollow some people. I've teachers in our church barely hanging on as they deal with students and parents acting out in all sorts of harmful ways. I want to thank all the educators fighting the good fight!
